About the current Postgraduate Admission application in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria:

No matter your choice of specialization, it will be better to have at least a second-class UPPER degree especially if you are coming from ANOTHER university! That is, if you are not an alumnus or graduate of the University of Ibadan because they VALUE their Second-class Lower graduates MORE than many Second-class UPPER graduates from OTHER universities especially those who did NOT graduate from a respected "FEDERAL university" in or outside the country.

The University of Ibadan requires every candidate, except the PhD candidates, to sit for a COMPUTER-based "English Proficiency Test' (EPT) and score at least 40% out of 100% to be considered for the "NEXT step" (not necessarily admission). The various Departments also have the RIGHT to set their own Test in addition to the general EPT.

However, the Department of Sociology has not set a Departmental Test since 2017 but rely ONLY on the EPT score to select and nominate candidates for Admission, so try to score ABOVE 40; in fact, aim for 50% and ABOVE if you are applying for Criminology and Penology! But, I do not know whether the Department will set a Test this year (2019).

Whether Second-class Lower or Upper, you can apply if the Requirements says so. But, the TRUTH is that the chances of gaining Admission if you fall BELOW 3.0 CGPA is thin, especially if you are not a graduate of the University. I can boldly tell you that ALL the 2017 Set of M.Sc. Sociology students I know, especially those who came from OTHER universities had at least 3.0 CGPA on a 5.0 scale or 5.0 CGPA on a 7.0 scale. In fact, ALL the 2017 M.Sc students in Criminology and Penology that came from other universities had a Second-class UPPER degree. And we are very FEW in Criminology, barely 13 in total and about 2 persons have either dropped or nowhere to be found since November 2018 till date.

So, you can apply as long as you met the Requirements and believe that you can score high in the EPT etc., to BOOST your chance of Admission.
Industrial Sociology has the LARGEST number of Masters students over the years, followed by Medical Sociology. They are not so strick like Criminology, and Development Sociology specialities that have the fewest students with "strick" but NICE lecturers.

With a Second-class Lower, and a good score in the EPT one may gain Admission into Industrial Sociology or Medical Sociology. Also note that you CAN later "change" your area of specialization if you secure Admission but it depends on the lecturers in that speciality and NUMBER of students changing into the particular specialty.

There are two types of Masters programmes in the University of Ibadan: Professional Masters, and Academic Masters programme.

You may or CANNOT later run a PhD Programme (especially in the UI) with a "PROFESSIONAL Masters" degree. The Professional Masters is mainly for those already WORKING in an organization and needed "extra-skills and knowledge" to improve efficiency and productivity in their workplaces. They do NOT write Project in their final year/session, NEITHER can they (really) lecture with the Professional Masters degree (except as consultants in rare occasions). That is one reason their forms and school fees are more EXPENSIVE than that of the Academic Masters because it is not too rigorous but geared more towards enhancing working experience.

As for the "ACADEMIC Masters," that is what, I believe, most of us here intend applying for. It is more rigorous: students will write Project/Disertation in their final year, and they can proceed to lecture and/or run a PhD with the Masters degree if they meet the required "PhD grade" by the University of Ibadan.

The amount for Professional Masters programme is AT LEAST N21,000 (twenty one thousand naira). That for Academic Masters is at least N16,000 , and that for PhD is N13,000 .Visit the OFFICIAL website of the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Although there are over seven (7) areas of specializations in the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, at the Master and PhD levels respectively as stated in the Admission Guide, in reality there are only FIVE (5) active specializations at the moment. All other specializations listed are linked to these five, namely:

1. Industrial Sociology

2. Criminology and Penology

3. Medical Sociology

4. Demography and Population Studies, and

5. Development Sociology

Prospective applicants should take note that the only OFFICIAL website of the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, is https://pgcollege.ui.edu.ng Every other website is FAKE, thus avoid getting information and/or registering on them to safe yourself from scammers/fraudsters!

One easy way to know a supposedly Nigerian school/university's website is fake is that they do NOT end with ".ng" (dot ng) or ". edu.ng" (dot edu dot ng) on their address protocol. If you see a Nigerian university or even Government website address that ends with ".com" (dot com) or ".org" (dot org) etc., then it is FAKE - it was created to either defraud (ignorant and CREDULOUS) persons or just to generate traffic to make easy cash. Nigerian Government website address ends with ".ng" (dot ng) or ".gov.ng" (dot gov dot ng). That just a simple tip I have for you.

As at the time of this write-up, the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, has RELEASED its 2019/20 postgraduate forms and the deadline is September 2019! Do check on the official website ( https://pgcollege.ui.edu.ng ) to read the Admission Guidelines and purchase your form!

Yes. Try to do the upload on your phone browser.

Snap your photo.
Crop it using Snapseed or https://picresize.com/, or similar tool/app.
Adjust the dimensions (if necessary) with your mobile photo editor or laptop editing software to meet the requirements.
Send the picture to someone you trust on WhatsApp and have them send it back to you.
Then, use the picture they sent back to you in your application.

If your image size is above 100kb, you can reduce the size on compressjpeg.com

For best result, let the image size be around 20kb.

Masters in Law is not divided, they have just professional masters this year. Does that mean those going for it won't be able to later go for a PhD or lecture with it?
