Five Ways To Improve Teaching & Learning Process by BalogunIdowu(m): 12:13pm On Aug 06, 2019

Teaching and learning is the major aim of any school or institution. Every other thing attached are to make the process organized and put a proper strata or structure for all those involved in the process.

Teaching learning process is very important for both the teachers, glorified teachers (lecturers) and or instructors as the case may be with the learners.

While I was already thinking about penning this topic down, my institution (Lagos state university, LASU) organised a teaching evaluation session for her students in various campuses including the college of medicine. This is basically to help improve teaching and learning process by getting feedback from students. This is a step forward in improving a system that considers the teaching learning process to be at the top notch.

Therefore, i see my institution improving and hopefully being among the top universities in the country in years to come just like professor (facilitator) asserted. Without losing track of the topic, I bring to you five ways to improve teaching and learning process within the four walls of a class or without.

1. OVERVIEW BEFORE SPECIFICS: for each course or subject as the case may be, the tutor needs to give an overview of each topic or course before digging deep. After which s/he can dive into the topic in details. During an overview, the learners are exposed to the entire perspective of the topic which makes them able to conceptualise it as a whole. It is like seeing the final arrangement of a puzzle before it's been scattered and asked to rearrange to fit. Some teaching learning process lacks this and just burst into teaching the topic directly. This needs to be considered and observe how much it'll assist the process.

2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES/ENTRY BEHAVIOUR: Even though in premise were this are been reiterated, trust me, only few practice the gospel being preached. Entry behaviour is a way of introducing topic to make learners capture the message that is yet to be discussed. Entry behaviour can be from being quite abstract to being physical.
On the other hand, learning objectives is as important as what is intended to he discussed. Not every single part of learning is important and that's where the learning objective(s) comes in. Of about 10/15 headlines of a topic, maybe just 5/7 are what the learners really needs to understand and cannot claim to complete the topic without comprehending. Stating out the learning objectives will identify how important those points are and the tutor should take some time to make the learners understand.

3. EXPLANATION OF TERMS: One of the most common way to confuse a learner is to teach topics that have their own register without explaining what they mean or their relevance to what is being studied. Yeah I know some of us will assume "hey, the should have a dictionary" but then, they struggle to understand two things simultaneously, the terms and the topic as a whole. For instance, if I am to teach new sets of students anatomy class a particular topic, there are certain terms I'll most likely use that needs to be understood as much as the topic. This cuts across all and infact plays a very key roll in the teaching learning process.

4. SIMPLE TO COMPLEX: "even the most simple things are complex in their own way" indigenousGenius.
For instance, if I begin to classify organisms and mention bacteria as being a prokaryote. As simple as I have mentioned "bacteria" as an example studying the world of bacteria (bacteriology) on its own. Therefore, tutors need to realise learners needs to be able to connect and relate what they have been taught. Building from simple to complex makes them understands the importance of the whole procedure. Sometimes, we can say known to unknown.

5. TEACHING TECHNIQUES/ REWARD SYSTEM: The style of delivery of a subject matter is as important as how much it'll be understood at least largely by the audience. We can all relate this from our classroom or session experience.
Reward system should be encouraged and as much as possible perhaps per topic matter. This will make student try as much as possible to be at their best knowing this. This will be a personal discretion of the teacher which should be purposeful!

I hope these five points will help benefit the teaching learning process. As much as this may be centred on the tutors, I'll come up with the learners part soon. Hope you enjoyed coming around, stay tuned!
