You can actually know the sex of a baby from 16 weeks but more clearly from 20 weeks and above using ultrasound. And there are some other means to check out too... Sometimes using heart rate to determine the sex of baby from 12 week can tell you if it's a boy or girl. If the heart rate is 150 above, it's girl but if it's less than 150 it's a boy

Medicine has gone beyond archaic practice. Guess you are basing your assertion only on USS. There are other methods that could give you the sex as early as the 11th week. Even an USS though may not be 100% correct, but if the sonographer is very good they could still predict the sex of the foetus earlier than the 5th months you are talking about.
