Gov. Zulum Approves N152.6m WAEC Fees For 24, 323 Indigent Students In Borno by zakim(m): 11:36pm On Aug 09, 2019
Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno has approved the release of N152.6 million for payment of May/June 2019 West African Examination Council (WAEC) registration fees to 23, 323 indigent students. The Special Adviser on Public Relations and Strategy to the governor, Isa Gusau, made the disclosure in a statement on Friday in Maiduguri.

The governor said that the approval was in compliance with established sponsorship policy initiated by the state government. He explained that the policy entailed provisions for the state government to contribute 45 per cent and local governments contributing 30 per cent while students are to contribute 25 per cent of the cost of the examination registration fees. Zulum said the gesture was sequel to a request by Mohammed Abacha, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education.

“I expect the contributions from the state and local government councils will inspire the students’ preparations for future examinations and dedicate themselves to studies. “I also expect that the government efforts will encourage parents to play their critical roles to support the learning and good characters of their children and wards,” Zulum said. He tasked school administrators and teachers to uphold high standard in teaching and preparations of students for examinations especially the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), to achieve academic excellence. That's a very welcome development, at least it would encourage those that can't afford the fees.

By the way I am of the opinion that public primary and secondary schools should have some level of free education.

Basic education should be made accessible to all Nigerians.

Who else thinks the fees being charged by both waec neco and co are just too expensive these days?

I suppose the news means WASSCE May/June 2020 because this year May/June WASSCE has been completed.

This is a good sponsorship policy at least the poor folks will benefit from it if done in good faith.

No country/state can grow without human development (education). Read about countries like Singapore and see their Economic Miracle.

I hope other governors will emulate this gesture..

Do we call this motivation to the indigenes or another way of making money through government aids?
But wait a minute....why are the Southerners and westerners being deprived of all these?

He won last election with about 97% votes cast. We all expect him to perform better than the performer called Shettima.

If your own Governor specialises in using your future to carry prostitutes, buy houses in Lagos and buy guns for thugs, that's your problem.

That’s very nice of the governor but most importantly those kids need qualified and good teachers, adequate resources and facilities such as schools with enough desks and chairs, no leaking roofs, laboratories, teaching aids and secured and peaceful environment to learn.
If the resources are not in place, a 100% financial assistance to help the students register for WAEC would be wasted.

I'm from the SW but I'll commend this guy. You know why?

He's the Governor of a state at war. He's someone who has a very good reason to refuse to do stuff but he's still pressing on to achieve much in spite of enormous challenges.

Before he became Governor, he was in charge of rebuilding infrastructure in destroyed communities of Borno state.

Even Pdp members in Borno were openly campaigning for this guy to become Governor.
