Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday with a trip to Newcastle.

Unai Emery will hand a debut to record signing Nicolas Pepe, after the Ivorian winger joined from Lille.

But they could have a new face at the back, too.

Arsenal have been desperate to sign a new defender this summer, and their efforts ramped up after it emerged that club captain Laurent Koscielny wanted to leave.

Koscielny went on to sign for French side Bordeaux, leaving a spot open at the back.

And Emery was desperate to sign Rugani to fill that gap.

It is expected that there will be an agreement struck before the transfer deadline on Thursday at 5pm, and Rugani could make his first appearance on Sunday at Newcastle.

But how could Arsenal line up with him in the starting XI? He will likely play at the back with Greek defender Socrates.

Rugani will have Lucas Torreira in front of him, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles likely to appear at right-back.

Potential starting XI: Leno, Maitland-Niles, Rugani, Sokratis, Monreal; Torreira, Xhaka, Ozil; Pepe, Lacazette, Aubameyang


The Italian has apparently agreed personal terms with Arsenal, but the two clubs still need to agree a deal.
