AntiMCU:
Folks complimented him in Bad Times at El Royale.
He also showed showed a little bit of range in Ghostbusters.

I think studios should overlook his attractiveness and give him mainly supporting roles; that is, if he'll accept.
But outside the MCU, he's not a B.O draw.

The MCU's success is more of a brand thing.
MCUs success grin grin
Finally, you said the truth

I think he has not been tested with a really challenging role that will test his abilities as an actor. Perhaps if he stops all these one-dimensional roles then he will be considered for more serious character portrayals.

Knowing Hollywood, that won't be happening anytime soon.
He was and he pulled it off nicely, playing a lead role in movie inspired by the legendary Moby Dick is not for stereotypical actors.

Ex Machina 9/10

Put a vagina on anything and man will fall in love with it.

A sex starved intelligent young man definitely wins a lottery to spend one week in the estate and association of the self isolated CEO of the company he's working for (a dominant search engine company, processing about 94 % of all internet searches), on getting there he is inundated to discover that he will be carrying out a Turing test on a humanoid robot called AVA.

To massacre a long story short.

Things go smoothly at first, but along the line feelings start to fly and emotions get in the way of logic and our man can't get his mind off the beautiful and intelligent robot, which leads to some grave mistakes and an ominous culmination of events.

A science fiction based on ideas and ideals but still possessing stunning visual effects and an encapsulating story, although I will say the ending was rushed and could have been done better, it can be overlooked as every other aspect of the picture was magnum opus.

Is this a review or a spoiler?

Furthermore, the movie was more about human emotions and what it means to be human (as compared to AI).
The best thing about the movie is the dialogue between the main character (the geek) and the CEO.

It's also about a man and his creation, like the tale of Frankenstein.

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Essex_(whaleship)
Essex was an American whaler from Nantucket, Massachusetts, which was launched in 1799. In 1820, while at sea in the southern Pacific Ocean under the command of Captain George Pollard Jr., she was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale. Stranded thousands of miles from the coast of South America with little food and water, the 20-man crew was forced to make for land in the ship's surviving whaleboats.
The men suffered severe dehydration, starvation, and exposure on the open ocean, and the survivors eventually resorted to eating the bodies of the crewmen who had died. When that proved insufficient, members of the crew drew lots to determine whom they would sacrifice so that the others could live. A total of seven crew members were cannibalized before the last of the eight survivors were rescued, more than three months after the sinking of the Essex. First mate Owen Chase and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson later wrote accounts of the ordeal. The tragedy attracted international attention, and inspired Herman Melville to write his famous novel Moby-Dick.

I was entertained.
