To all self-taught programmers

What was your journey like as a self-taught programmer? How did the path influence your growth? Would you have wished you learnt through a professional?

Those that learnt through professionals/I.T firm
What's your story?

Help inspire someone.

Hello, l am a self taught programmer and l believe it's the best option if like me you can cultivate the habit of sitting in front of your system for long hours. l use google and stackoverflow a lot, and overtime l've become more patient with the debugging process.

Being a self taught programmer is difficult, because you may have no compass on your learning path, and spend more time. Also you may have little or no feed back, but when you put in the required amount of time (say an average of 2 hours per day) and go through the process, it's definitely worth it. This is because you know you are your own teacher, and you measure up your progress by yourself. You are much more actively involved in it.
A self taught programmer however can also search for other programmers around in order to cultivate the habit of team work, and also for the required feedback.
l'll advice a self taught programmer to combine both the bottom up as well as the top down learning approach. Fortunately for us in this current global village, it has become easier to be self taught and very advantageous with the tons of resources online.

I, based on personal oplopin suggest you start with C++, I would recommend PYTHON too (but learning python that is much simpler would limit your growth in other programing languages.)

Most common syntax use same as c++ , so understanding c++ is a good foundation to learn other programing languages.

For me Java tends to be more complex, I remember when I started Java I used to think to myself - why all the long Grammer for simple actions.

But I found it easier with Java because I had gotten to a stage in c++ where I understood many things already, how arrays, pointers, logical statements etc worked.

So what I basically needed from Java was to understand where the syntax and keywords changed.

After c++ you can now move to python which I believe is growing fast.
I'm currently on python and I must say it's the easiest to learn.

But it's one thing to learn and one thing to apply and that's what I think we face in nigeria.

Back in school where we taught c++, we we're only taught basics, doing programs for calculation etc,
We were never told how to even apply of interface them,
our programs ended on the command line.

So it's ur duty to teach yourself all this things because even if you learn the whole c++ or Java or python and still don't know where to apply them productively it becomes a waste.

I'm currently not on my PC now, else I'd drop names of ebooks I used throughout.

But for videos on c++, Java, python etc there's on reputable source and I'm sure u must have heard or seen.
He's called BUCKY.
BUCKY programming tutorials.

Having them on your phone also helps.
Every day I make sure I finish a chapter from my book,
And have video tutorials I listen to like audio without need to look the screen because I can visualize what the code would do already. Once you reach that stage you're good.
And you then get introduced to new things u don't already know.

I was starting from HTML and CSS, then I moved to JavaScript, which is much more complicated. Also, I am using the help of openGeeksLab which is helping to design lab app for android. It's really hard to find a reliable company but they are helping to do everything really fast. I also suggest thinking about learning Python and C++ which is also very important as fo me.

Bottom up: Simply means starting from the very basics and going gradually before you start executing meaningful projects.
Top down: Means you begin directly with meaningful projects, and learn all the way down to the basics as you accomplish those projects.
Combining both means using both of these approaches interchangeably at various stages of the learning process.

Got it. Thanks.

I want to say though that I'd like the Top down strategy because starting out I'm just kind of bored out by the basics so if maybe I can see the end product of a particular coding process and how it was built incorporating these basic concepts, then maybe I'd appreciate the functions of the basic knowledge more.

All the same though, I guess I'll get to see exciting stuff as I progress in the learning process. smiley

going by ur definition... a website is a web application?
Javanian:
WEB APPLICATION

A web application is an application that is accessed by users over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. examples of web applications are Facebook, yahoomail, gmail, Nairaland etc. Web applications are also created with a range of programming languages like PHP, Python, JSP/Servlets, ASP, ASP.NET, Ruby etc

Whatever approach you take though, never forget the basics in the end.

I'm a bit confused but with the question but what I can say is that C++ can be used in developing mobile application and desktop application, and even web based applications.
However some of these domains have an already established development framework whose language may or may not be c++, and it's advisable to go with the recommended language
