President Donald Trump has on multiple occasions brought up buying Greenland from the Danish government and the White House counsel's office has looked into the possibility. Trump's interest in buying Greenland was first reported on Thursday by The Wall Street Journal. Two sources tell the Wall Street Journal that Donald Trump has repeatedly asked his advisers with 'varying degrees of seriousness' if it would be possible for the U.S. to acquire the autonomous Danish territory for its abundant natural resources and geopolitical significance. The Journal reported that people familiar with the deliberations said the President has raised the issue during meetings and dinners, asking aides and listening seriously about the possibility and advantages of owning Greenland. He also asked his White House counsel to research the matter, according to two of the people. Two of the people also told the Journal that Trump's aides were divided on the issue, with some praising it as solid economic strategy and others dismissing it as a passing fancy. Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is home to Thule Air Base, the US military's northernmost base, located about 750 miles above the Arctic Circle and built in 1951. The radar and listening post features a Ballistic Missile Early Warning System that can warn of incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles and reaches thousands of miles into Russian territory. I think Trump is looking at something... A bigger picture this time. Recently, the Chinese have started developing some form of "strange" interest in Greenland and the whole thing is getting the Danish government in Copenhagen worried. Apparently, they are not the only ones getting worried about the Chinese incursion into Greenland. Seems Trump is not having any of that too. Imagine China rolling out plans to build and or expand seaports, airports and airstrips on Greenland even with a US military base sitting comfortably there? Add that to tapping into Greenland's resources. I think that could be why the Whitehouse is considering the possibility of buying Greenland over completely. To keep out the Chinese. It's simple: Buy up Greenland and throw the Chinese out once and for all. Come to think of it too Greenland is pretty much part of North America and this wouldn't be the first time the Danes would be selling[if/when they eventually do that is] out any of their territories to the US. They did it with the US Virgin Islands[then known as the Danish West Indies] in 1917 for over 20 million Dollars. But I doubt that they would be willing to barter off Greenland though much as they hate the Chinese incursion. 5 Likes |
