The US Navy is to honor a World War II hero when a new aircraft carrier is named for Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller.

The announcement is expected to be made at Pearl Harbor Monday, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Friday.



Miller was the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for valor.

Miller was recognized for manning a machine gun without training on the USS West Virginia and returning fire against Japanese planes during the December 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

American hero: Miller is credited for going 'beyond the call of what's expected'. An African American was not allowed to man a gun in the Navy in 1941 so Miller had received no training when he manned the machine gun during the Pearl Harbor attack.


'He subsequently manned a 50-cal. Browning anti-aircraft machine gun until he ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship,' the Navy said, noting Miller was not trained to operate the gun.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet, presented the Navy Cross to Miller in Pearl Harbor in May 1942.


Miller died on a ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1943 (2 years later).

Naming the newest addition after a sailor is uncommon, with the more recent carriers typically honoring former US presidents, such as aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy.

The USS Doris Miller will be the fourth of the Gerald Ford-class supercarriers.

Lauren Bruner, who died in September, 2019 at the age of 98, was one of the last few survivors of the Japanese attack on the USS Arizona in 1941.

A few years before his death, he made arrangements with the US Navy and the National Park Service to have his remains ashes taken down to then sunken ship's hull.

He was the second-to-last sailor to escape the burning ship during the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 78 years ago.

Bruner will be the last sailor to be interred/buried inside the USS Arizona, joining the remains of 44 shipmates who survived the attack but wished to be laid to rest at the site.

Back to the story, the African American had every reason to abandon ship and run away. America marginalised him because of his colour, he was even trained for the task all because of hs colour. They were even treating him as a second class citizen. But he didn't abandon his country in time of need. He fought and defended his country. He would have lost his life if not for God's grace. America didn't give him the reason for this but his patriotism was unshakeable. Nigeria is not what we want it to be but we shouldn't dump the country. We have no other country. Every fight we fight must be geared towards making the country better.

America isn't the only country experiencing that improvement and discoveries in science and technology. Other countries are experiencing it too, Iran, North Korea and the rest are not in the stage they were in the 50's.

I never said only America was improving. I even went as far as saying that weapons used during vietnam may even be obsolete now. Was it only American that used weapons? . Every nation is growing and improving in warfare even if it is at very very slow pace like Nigeria.
