pls lawyers in the house,
What do they mean by 1billion bail?
Does that mean he has to pay the amount to our court, or they mean his suretties must have property worth of the amount?
Bail is like the court holding your cash as a security measure, pending when the trial gets completed to ensure the accused does not abscond.
Once the trial is concluded the money is released. Whether the accused was found guilty or not.
Bail is more like a security measure. So yes. The person wouldn't lose his money unless the accused absconds!

Amicusacuriae:
it means that he deposits the money with court so that in the event that he runs away the Court takes possession of the money and hold the sureties responsible till they are able to provide him.
If he however makes himself available to all the court proceedings without jumping bail the money will be returned to him.

Thankyou.
From the comments above It's a pity so many Nigerians don't understand the concept of bail.
He met 1 BILLION Naira bail under one week?!
He has some politicians that have raped and looted our national treasury behind him.
The same politicans that some nonentities are still singing their names up till now.
There was nation!

That was the era when STEALING WASN'T CORRUPTION.
The evil and corrupt thieves did everything in their power to rig the election , but our votes prevailed.
The first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent lost an election.
PDP in Nigeria again?!
God forbid bad thing!
Ride on, but APC no good too o.

however, if he did not jump bail and convicted at the end of the court proceedings. What then happens to the moneyhuh
he still gets the money back whether or not he is found guilty. He deposited the money as security for the bail and not for the outcome of his conviction

Don't be too fast. You know nothing about the law and its processes. It won't cost you much to read the constitution.

The 1 billion naira bail does not mean he or his surety has to pay the sum before his release but the surety will forfeit the money if he jumps bail.

You are wrong the court dose not collect anything from the accused Or surty you will just show evidence of the money via your bank statement Incase the accused abscond then the court will freez the bank acct and asset of the surty anybody can stand surty infact it’s a business venture in Nigeria the call them professional surty the take money depending on your bail conditions

when I said in the possession of the Court i didn't necessarily mean actual possession. In so far as the money must be available indirectly means the Court is still in possession of it
Re: Maurice Iwu Meets N1 Billion Bail, Regains Freedom After A Week In Jail by EsquireTee(m): 8:10am On Aug 19, 2019
perfecting bail doesnt mean paying the money in cash.
It means providing someone who will undertake to pay the cash in the event that the accused person absconds
Jayslicky:
The court should rather corncerned about how Iwu is able to pop out 1billion naira, is it the same public office that made him so rich like that, if his tax payment doesn't corrolate with is earnings or assets, he should be locked up back but this is Nigeria.

If he jumps bail, the money is forfeited to the govt. Otherwise the money is returned at the final verdict

You don’t know how bail bond works. You think they actually deposited 1billion Naira for his bail? ... You’re very ignorant.
