You know what I hate about Nigeria schools? They charge parents excessively and pay teachers peanuts! Imagine paying Basic Tuition of N350,000 (they are other expenses- books, clubs etc) and you pay teachers N30,000 monthly. Its just wrong! Can't teachers do something?

We have teachers association or Union, right? Can't they protest to be paid fairly?

While I do understand these are private schools and the salaries are based on the proprietress or board of trustees discretion I still find it absurd! There should be a minimum wage for this. It shouldn't just be acceptable because "its my school and that's what I will pay". The impact of teachers CANNOT be underestimated.

What can be done?

Can we report ministry of education?
Do you know their handle or email? Please with it!

Thanks.

Report them to ministry of education? I laugh cheesy .Government that's dragging #30000 minimum wage with NLC . I think the best thing is to do salary increment meeting involving teachers and school management or you should go on strike too cheesy
And I'm very sure all the teachers there cannot be on the same salary scale

A school is in need of a sound and experienced teacher that can teach physics, mathematics and basic tech. The school is located along kasunmu - asunle road, so if you live around orita,new-garage , odo-ona kekere, academy (the one along akala express way) etc..you can call me on 09052848921

This is an important discussion. If you are paying a million naira for your child’s education but the teacher is paid N50,000, your child is receiving N50,000 education. Everything else is branding and packaging.

One of the major problem is the presence of untrained or half-trained teachers in the system. And this is due to the lack of jobs elsewhere. It was meant to be for just B.Ed/NCE grad, but no..B.Sc, OND, HND..even M.Sc (my God)..are jostling for the same position. And of course, when the demand for the jobs is high, the wages payable crashes.
If a union is to be formed, who'ld be qualified to be there and who wouldn't? Because for Private schools, even fresh WASSCE leavers have a spot there.
And there is nothing government can do jare. They are still busy extorting private school owners

After my findings, I attribute the ordeal to government negligence of the sector. The nonchalance with which education is handled by the government is actually more chilling than the negative trend itself.
Let me digress a bit. Our contemporaries that studied law are not facing this same ordeal because there is no such negligence.
Some days back, I was at NBA conference to witness annual meeting of Lawyers. It was attended by who is who among them. I don't know what they discussed but it was sponsored by the FG. There's no such conference for teachers.
Now I have these solutions to proffer:
Firstly, the professional body called TRCN has not done alot. I want them to establish a task force that will be going into schools to chase out these charlatans who have come to take what rightly belongs to us. Such can be done by constituting bodies like SOSAN, and the rest of them to go into schools and ensure that subjects are handled by those that majored in it. What is an engineer doing in Secondary school? He has no business there. The list is endless. Microbiologists, Business Administration graduates, etc. all these don't have business in school. Today they are the one that predominate teaching. Even here they are the ones that have taken over...
Secondly, Private schools excesses should be looked into. They are the ones that have more unqualified teachers and yet they are boasting of doing it better.
Lastly, government negligence. This has given way to all these messes. I think education should be in the exclusive list.

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe the figures mentioned in your post. A school charging 350k and paying the teachers 30k? That sounds far-fetched. Please name the school and we can follow up. If you do not wish to drop the name here, private chat me. I'm interested in knowing the school. I run a school where the fees is from 24k - 60k and I pay more than that! Besides, I think young education graduates should form cooperative societies, rent a building from their NYSC year savings, and start their schools rather than fighting greedy proprietors over their schools.

God bless you sir/ma, even me too, I have been to an interview before, after I have written the test and performed excellently, they said they will be paying 40k as salary and that is their fixed price, non negotiable, and I have already made an enquiry about their school fees before in which I was told that day students are paying 250k and boarders are paying 350k, infact they even said that if they want to pay for August salary for instance, they will pay it by 15 of September and subsequently like that, infact some people are just naturally wicked in this country honestly!

This is a long road to work. How many graduates want to even teach? Even the Education grad want to work in a bank.

This is the one thing most parents in highbrow areas like Lekki don't understand. Teachers' welfare is just as important as your kids' educational advancement. God forbid I take my kids to all these cosmetic schools who pay their teachers peanuts.
