Airport Closure: Enugu Govt To Provide Palliative Measures For Air Travelers

Following the closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu for repairs, Enugu State Government has disclosed its plan to provide palliative measures for air travelers from the state, who now travel through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State and Asaba Airport in Delta State, to get to their various destinations.

In a statement made available to Igbere TV on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, stated that the government was deeply concerned about the plight of the air travelers from the state, especially the challenges of transportation and security.

The state government, therefore, disclosed that it will announce its palliative measures and strategies to cushion the effect of the challenges on the air travelers, after the meeting of the South East Governors Forum this Saturday, where the governors will, among other issues, deliberate on the challenges facing the air passengers and come up with a regional plan to be adopted.

The statement reads:

“Following the closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu for repairs, Enugu State Government is deeply concerned about the plight of air travelers from the state, who have to travel through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State and Asaba Airport, Delta State to get to their various destinations.

“The state government is specifically concerned about the challenges of transportation and security the air passengers will face.

“In the light of the above, the South East Governors Forum will meet on Saturday, August 31, 2019, to among other issues, deliberate on the challenges and come up with a regional plan to be adopted.

“After the meeting, Enugu State Government will announce its palliative measures and strategies to cushion the effect of the challenges on the air travelers.”

Y'all waited till the actual closure and you're just about to deliberate on this meanwhile there has been ample notice of this closure whether right or wrong. Why do our leaders wait until a situation starts to deteriorate before they think of taking action?

But when they did the Abuja-Kaduna one it was the federal gov’t that took care of safety and logistic issues! How comes the one of Enugu-Owerri/Asaba is now left to the state gov’ts of the south-east to worry about?

Abuja airport was completely shut down during repairs. The only thing an see here is that the road to asaba or owerri ought to have been fixed before the closure just as that if kaduna was fixed when Abuja airport was closed.

Same thing that I was thinking. Cos FG paid chisco and some other transport company to convey passengers from abj to kad. Not to mention the number of security personnel deployed to that road.

They should repair the bad roads. Period!

More like Ugwuoba to Awka. The same goes for Awgu to the diversion to Anambra. It is always the portion where the northerners park their trailers that is very deplorable making it easy for Fulani herdsmen to attack travellers.

The worst governor enugu state has ever produced. He is a cunning man. Chimaroke Nnamani still learning work when compared to him. Enugu state is in the hands of thieves, that is why insecurity has escalated in the state in recent times.
