Glad to see someone requesting this skillset. I am very conversant with big data technologies, and have assisted post graduate students with their research using hadoop, hdfs, google cloud cluster (dataproc) and java. You're not suppose to be working together in your PhD research. You are suppose to work on it alone and figure it out. There are tons of materials out there. Tons of papers and journals on distributed systems and databases. If you're really serious, get a copy of the book "Designing data intensive application" That will be a good start
