The death of former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, has been officially confirmed, Igbere TV is reporting. Igbere TV had earlier reported that the former leader passed on at 95 in Singapore, where he was seeking treatment. President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has this to say about the first post-independent president of the country. “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe's founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe”, Mnangagwa wrote on Twitter. “Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. For those who deeply understand African history within the context of western imperialism,Mugabe was and remains a great hero despite the fact that in his quest to see Zimbabwe achieve his vision of a great,free and prosperous nation,he ended up putting them in chains therefore playing into the hands of those who always wanted to deprive his people of their wealth. Many times,he stood up for Africa and Africans without fear of sanctions and death including challenging world powers in his thought provoking speeches and boycotts. His mistakes present an opportunity for other African leaders to take the higher road while taking up the great Pan-African ideals he enunciated and tried to work towards. Mugabe was a great intellectual,eloquent,courageous and outspoken leader and never played the ostrich when the occasion demanded. He has played his part and history will never forget him. The onus NOW lies on us who are still alive to do better. Respect to President Mnangagwa for his tribute to the departed and undisputed leader of the Zimbabwean liberation.
