I like the song Bor Ekom more than any of her other songs. She has an excellent voice.

Exactly! I'm not particularly fond of gospel songs for some odd reason but Mercy Chinwo's " Bor Ekom " in my native Ibibio language blew me away. She pronounced every word as good as any native speaker of the language. Darn! Still the only churchy song I keep playing for months now.

she actually crossed over from secular to Gospel. She was in Nigeria idol season 2
She was never secular...right from when she was a back up singer,it was with gospel musicians...Nigerian idols was just an opportunity she took advantage of

The reason? Nigerian gospels songs almost have the same predictable lyrics and they go over the top with being sanctimonious. Or you could find the reason in the next paragraph of this reply.

LOL. Naira Marley? I have never listened to Naira Marley's "Soapy" even in passing. I'm more into alternative music and ,sometimes, electro-pop if I want groovy songs. You'd find me listening to Jon Bellion, Imagine Dragons, Sia, Anthem Lights, Passenger, Alan Walker, Anne Marie, Billie Eilish and the likes. For Nigerian music, it's Johnny Drille, Nonso Amadi and Bez for me. If fact, the whole of this week I have only listened to Sia's "This Is Acting" and " 1000 Forms Of Fear " albums, along with Alessia Cara songs. Johnny Drille and Jon Bellion especially are confessed Christians with very clean songs which are edifying.

My music tastes are very different from those of the average Nigerian young person. wink

Nna,as I said,Nigeria idol was an opportunity to launch her into limelight and a solo career. Those songs were chosen by those in charge of the show, they were not songs composed by her. Even her winning song was more of a motivational song.kpomkwem

Yeah! it's not surprising that you don't understand.

That's life. Many things many people do not understand. But I'll break it down for you.

You are probably on the side of the majority of the people in this world who have a corrupt or incomplete understanding of life. You may not be in that category totally but you are probably into it to some degree.

Now this corrupt or incomplete notion those people have about life, they have been applying it and it has caused them to be treading a path/living a life that will lead to doom. But it doesn't seem obvious to many.

But God in his infinite mercy has decided he is gonna send a hero to the world. The one who is gonna propagate the true understanding of life and guide people to it. So many people like you who have been having a corrupt or incomplete understanding of life will see the light.

The reason why I said he is your hero is because he is going to come from amongst you, the Muslims. And through him, many will be saved God willing.

And his name, IMES!!!

You still may not understand. But if u live long enough to witness his coming, I hope you will.

Sinach? Maybe five or six years ago when a Nigerian singing like the Hillsongs of this world was somewhat novel. Sinach in recent times sings like a Cynthia Morgan with autotune. Frank Edwards has released back to back sub-par songs in the last five years. What's there to look forward to? Nikki Laoye? The predictably sleepy Lara George? Who? Their songs are predictably boring and nothing special.

(i'm learning) what do you think they should do to improve in their songs?

NaijaTushboy:

Sinach should go back to being Sinach. She has a niche and should stop trying to blend in to fit the Nigerian style of gospel. Not everyone must be Sammy Okposo or Asu Ekiye. She came as 'the different one' and has to stay so to retain her audience.

I don't think Frank Edwards can be 'salvaged'. He's lost himself in the noise and to the flamboyance. His kind of music wasn't sustainable anyway since he isn't particularly a gifted singer but just a musician. Almost like the gospel version of D'Banj.

Lara George and Nikki Laoye? I don't know; they've remained, well, just that way for over a decade so we've learnt not to expect anything spectacular. ...And music lovers like myself want more.

That's where Mercy Chinwo has an edge - her vocals are impeccable and she stretches it without being rapsy. Her lyrics are somewhat different in every song and she blends genres well. Plus she seems to be a polyglot - her command of the Igbo, Ibibio and, partly, Yoruba languages gives her an edge. But that's only because there aren't too many spectacular gospel singers to compare. At some point, we all get tired of the noise and want something easygoing and reflecting which isn't overly sanctimonious; but, sadly, a lot of Nigerian gospel songs are just noise so I avoid them.

Please don't be annoy that i'm asking you all this questions coz i'm also into (gospel) music.
You said that frank edward is not gifted right? What makes you think he isn't gifted and can you explain who a gifted singer is?

NaijaTushboy:

what about nathaniel bassey?

Nathaniel Bassey is nobody's peer. It's unfair to compare him to others - his consistency, his vocals, his daring to exploit, his carriage... Nathaniel Bassey ranks extremely high. But Nathaniel Bassey songs are just, well, too mushy and overly religious ( if there's any such thing in gospel music). Sometimes you just want to listen to songs without hell being a central term.

Sinach is probably just as good if only remains Sinach and not try to blend.

There are gifted musicians and gifted singers. The former involves song writing and composition and the later is about delivery. Frank Edwards is bad about being both. It's either the songs are badly written or composed or he sings them wrongly. He came to limelight singing 'Rock Gospel' which is good for his rapsy voice but he now tries pop and even Afrobeat gospel with the same voice and it's a total disaster. Plus the recent songs are poorly composed too.

Sinach's and Nathaniel's voices fits with their genre of gospel music. If they try rock it'd be bad. Rock is what Frank Edward should focus on because of his voice.

Truth is, like I stated in my first reply to you, I'm not particular about gospel songs. I'm less religious than you think I am. I take spirituality serious though but let me not bother you with the comparisons.

My preferred gospel songs are not necessarily tagged "Gospel songs". Jon Bellion's "Hand of God', "JT' and other such songs can be said to be gospel. Johnny Drille has gospel songs too. I mean, if you have lyrics like, "...I thought my way to greatness, I could claim this but He [God] gave me the brain" on Jon Bellion's "JT" then it's a somewhat gospel song for me. But maybe it's because regardless of it being 'secular' or gospel, I love cool, slow-paced songs with good lyrical content.

oh now i understand but it seems like those types of songs are not appreciated because alot of people prefer the kpangolo type of music to cool songs
