As members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) continue with plans for their annual procession, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has directed Commissioners of Police in all the States and the FCT, to stop the gathering..

Despite being proscribed by the federal government, the Shiites had announced that they would proceed on their yearly Ashura procession on September 10 in Abuja and other cities in the North.

The police have however warned that any gathering by the Shi’ites would be treated as “a gathering in the advancement of terrorism.”

In line with the Terrorism (Prevention) Proscription Order Notice of July 26, 2019, the police stated that the IMN had been proscribed in the country and could not hold any procession.n

Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, in a statement on Monday, said: “It has come to the knowledge of the Nigeria Police Force that some members of the proscribed IMN intend to embark on a nationwide procession, ostensibly to cause disruption of public peace, order and security in the country.

“The force notes that in line with the Terrorism (Prevention) Proscription Order Notice 2019, the activities of the IMN have been proscribed.

“Consequently, all gathering or procession by the group remains ultimately illegal and will be treated as a gathering in the advancement of terrorism.”

Every Friday afternoon, we non-muslims are compelled to avoid several road intersections blocked by muslims for their prayers. Noone has been killed for observing their religious obligations. In same vein muslims have had to endure hold ups on Lagos Ibadan expressway on First Fridays of every month. Why can't we just let sleeping dogs lie for goodness and peace sake in Nigeria?

In Canada, I have seen the Sikhs hold their procession with police directing and controlling traffic. Why are different please?

Even in Wahhabi Saudi Arabia where their Shi'ite citizens are persecuted, the Shi'ites hold Ashura procession. Isn't the proscription against the IMN as an organization and not against the Shi'ites or Shia Islam as a religion? The Ashura procession is not a protest rally but a religious ceremony and a religious procession. How does holding a religious procession, which by the way is held annually across major cities across the globe like New York and London, amount to "advancement of terrorism"? Didn't the government say Shi'ites are free to practice their faith? Taking such measure or plan to attack a religious ceremony is uncalled for and unnecessary. People should be allowed to go about their religious ceremonies and processions, as far as it is not a political or protest gathering. If the IGP carries out his threat to kill people on a religious procession, then it belies the government declaration that people are free to practice their faith and only one group or organization, and not a religion, is banned.

The IGP is apparently threatening Nigerian citizens with death for embarking on a peaceful religious procession. After killing people on the procession, media houses will be reporting that Shi'ites "clashed" with police.
