The federal executive council (FEC) has approved an increase in value added tax (VAT) rate from 5% to 7.2%.

Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, disclosed this to state house correspondents at the end of the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

However, this is subject to an amendment of the VAT act of 1994 by the national assembly.
VAT replaced the sales tax in 1994 and was pegged at 5% by the military government of Sani Abacha.

In 2007, former president Olusegun Obasanjo increased VAT to 10% on the eve of his departure from office but it was reversed by his successor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, following opposition from labour.

Wednesday’s FEC meeting, which started at 11am and ended at 6:12pm, was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ahmed said FEC directed immediate consultations with states, local governments and other relevant stakeholders before the new rate takes effect in 2020.

Buhari the Holy Looter.
You increase VAT by 50% to make more monies for Abba Kyari to loot on your behalf.

Buhari what has happened to all the Abacha loot that was returned to your govt?
What has happened to the monies derived from the pump price increment by your govt?
What has happened to the stamp duties your govt introduced?
What has happened to all the monies you have been borrowing upandan and putting the country into huge debts?
And yet you have refused to pay the 30k minimum wage that you deceived Nigerians that you will pay in order to get their votes.
The next thing will be for you to increase pump price again.
All in all, nothing to show for it.
You are just a wicked corrupt looter.
A petty thief in Aso Villa. Wolf in sheep clothing.
Continue to inflict hardship on Nigerians while you eat our monies dry.

I don't blame you, I blame the useless people that calls themselves your supporters.
God will judge you and your crook uncle Abba Kyari.

7% vat. No wonder Nigeria is undeveloped. People want good road, constant power supply, other good infrastructures but don't want to pay tax. How can the country develope with meagre 7% vat.

why should government increase VAT when more than 50% of population are poor? goverment should rather reduce cost governance, minimise corruption and impose heavy tax on luxurious items. to minimize corruption, sanitize Nigeria police. If police is corrupt, fighting corruption will remain a joke.

Vat up
Food prices, specifically rice gone up 25% following border closure.
Phcn tariff has been secretly increased,as reflected in recent bills,by about 25%.
Petrol prices will follow soon or later.
All these in the midst of an economy that is harmorrhaging because there is none or very little purchasing power and businesses being forced to close or operate at subsistence level.
This is what 15million imps voted to lead them.
Hell awaits those people,if indeed there is actually a place like that.

Finally, they have given up on efforts to tax the rich and now want to vex their frustrations on the middle class and SMEs.

Instead of further widening the net to make the non-payers to pay, they now want to punish those who have been complying.

Very backward development.

The Parliament is in their pocket, so that is another hopeless situation.

What a way to celebrate the victory at the tribunal?

Anyway, everyday for the thief, just ONE day for the owner.
