I Wholeheartedly Support Borders’ Closure — Emir Sanusi by jarawa: 5:12pm On Sep 18, 2019
jarawa:
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed satisfaction with the decision of the federal government to close the land borders with the neighbouring countries, describing it as the only way through which Nigeria’s anti-smuggling laws could be enforced. He stated this in Kano on Wednesday while briefing the press in his palace on the sideline of recent appointments into the National Economic Advisory Council by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He blamed the country’s porous land borders for high incidences of tax evasion, which according to him have been turned into escape routes from excise duties and tariffs as well as viable channels for diversion of petroleum products from the country. The monarch emphasized that closing the borders remains the only option for the country to resuscitate its agricultural sector and develop its economy. He said: “If you remember when the president came to Kano on official visit, I actually talk about closing the borders with the Republic of Benin.

I always felt that if you really want to enforce laws that you have against smuggling, you need to close borders. “You have petroleum products moving basically across the borders from Nigeria to neighbouring countries because of our fuel subsidies. You have goods coming in across the border using the port in Cotonou to avoid tax revenues in Lagos; so what happens is we don’t get the revenue from duties and tariffs and then we end up having the goods coming in anyway. “Closing the borders becomes indispensable because our neighbouring countries are not helping us to protect our economy. For instance, if you want to protect rice farmers, you have to impose heavy taxation on importation of foreign rice into the country.

“Therefore, any country that allows smuggling of rice into Nigeria through its borders is doing that at the expense of our farmers who could not withstand competition with foreign producers. Besides rice and other food items, you must also understand that all the illicit drugs get into this country through the land borders. “So sometimes it is important to take these difficult decisions so that we get the cooperation and collaboration of Customs officials across the borders. It is something that I wholeheartedly support. I think it is temporary and I think it will lead to improvement,” the monarch emphasised.

Commenting about the new economic advisory council, the Emir commended the president for choosing competent hands to serve in his economic advisory team, describing the team as first class group of professionals. “If you look at the kind of system we operate, if you look at the United States, every US president always has a council of economic advisers, and one of the reasons you have that council is you could want independent academics who are able to give you frank and honest advice on how to run the economy and address its problems.

“What the president has done is to follow that pattern to appoint a team of highly respected professionals to advice him and this time we have economic problems when we have fiscal issues when the global economy is facing some crisis; it is extremely important that the president has high quality advice so this is to me one of the best things the government has done for the country and this team is first class team,” he added.

Let's call a spade by its proper name Emir, the government in Nigeria has failed completely. Why should closure of your border be a method to stop illegal importation when your government is paying thousands of incompetent people to man its borders till date.

I still didn't hear that the ministry of interior or the head of customs has been sacked by the government, they are just taking the easy way out to place a blanket ban like they did in 1984, triggering the "essential commodities " scarcity that crippled the nation back then.

Continue to close your borders and don't sanitize the customs which come into supermarkets to seize goods which they collected bribes to let into the country at the borders.

It's a failure of leadership.

you can't solve that issues of illegal importation with only mar sacking or probing official in charge bcs it is in Nigeria. In my own a leader can't dictate or to still be in charge of everything but those he put in charge to represent him are sabotaging the activities of a leader and if you sack them !! You appoint another one.yet they will still do more .To me what he did is the best due to the environmental and the nature of who African or Nigerians are.The best languages Nigerians or Africans understand is SELFISHNESS .they can sabotage anything for their personal benefits .

Is there any law, custom or tradition, that would prevent PDP from giving this man presidential ticket?

If PDP can pull this off, it would be a walkover, no debate.

Pair him with Peter Obi or Umahi, and we are fine.

Sanusi is one northerner I hold in high esteem and he's a PDP apologist, so it would be easy.

In another news, if as a critic of Buhari administration, I also, wholeheartedly agree with border closure.

My Igbo brothers should stop importing foreign rice through Benin. It will help our local farmers get the adequate reward for their sweat.

Sanusi/Obi2023, let's sing this song loud.

He should agree where the govt takes the right step.

Then he must ban cattle movement into Nigeria first. Or are those herders not selfish? Are they not smuggling?

It is crass ignorance on the side of the emir to support to support the government on the closure of border because of rice. Its obvious he does not understand perfectly well what happens at the borders.

Is it only rice that is being imported through the borders?

Presently we have over four trailers of hides and skin coming from Mali stuck in the border .

What about other exports to other African countries?

All of them will now be in comatose because of rice.
The presidency should device an effective means of curbing smuggling in the boarders not shutting it down, trust me it is counter productive.

SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI should know better.

Gbam well said SLS, we just need to get it right once and for all in this country, whatever you do in this life people will talk, it’s how they’re made. Kudos to Mr president on that move. Benin Republic and Niger republic are our greatest enemies in this country and it’s because we allowed it.

In free trade ,there will winners and there will be losers, right now, Nigeria is the loser,we must restrategize on how to solve the issue of our porous borders else there will be no end in sight to this parasitic relationship.self preservation is key for any country.
