WATCHOVER Episode 15
Title: CHAIN REACTION III

At the warehouse, Ajubo had slept off on the arm-chair while Rose still lay on the sofa, Earnest came back after a long while. He reached the door and got the idea to sneak up on Ajubo, he carefully opened the door so there was no squeak, put his fingers together like a gun and tip-toed towards Ajubo.

AJUBO
(eyes still shut) You were already dead before you took two steps from the door.

EARNEST
Whoa! I think say you de sleep! But if I bin mean to shoot you, you for don die first na.

AJUBO
You think so? I heard you from the entrance and grabbed this!

He raised his hand from his side, he was holding a glock 21 handgun.

EARNEST
Ah, you hold gun de sleep?

AJUBO
No, I celotape am under my chair, as I hear you de open door like thief, I pull am out.

EARNEST
Wow! You de craze o.

AJUBO
You buy the medicine?

Earnest handed the pills to him, he got up and went into the kitchen, Earnest took the seat and watched Ajubo go into the kitchen, then he looked under the table beside him and saw an M16 assault rifle strapped under, he looked towards the kitchen and shook his head.

At the Airport, people who had just arrived were going for their luggage. A man rolled his box, he walked out of the building looking left to right he heard someone call his name from a distance “Uncle Michael”, he turned to see Oma waving at him with both hand, she and Big Boss were waiting beside their car, He walked to them.

OMA
Uncle Michael

She spread her arms for a hug, he hugs her and pecked her on both cheeks.

MICHAEL
It is so good to see you again angel, I’ve missed you!

He broke the embrace and turned to Big Boss

MICHAEL
Fred!

They elbow-shook each other and locked shoulders

BIG BOSS
Welcome back brother.

They all entered into the car and drove off.


At the Mansion

MICHAEL
Aaron! It doesn’t make sense,

He had just been brought up to speed with the recent happenings. He stood behind a sofa in the sitting room.

BIG BOSS
What doesn’t make sense?

MICHAEL
Aaron knows you, he knows how to kill you, why would he waste bullets on you when he knows they’ll have no effect.

BIG BOSS
Maybe he just wanted to play games, I mean they hurt my daughter.

MICHAEL
Have you found out when he was released? Cause I think he just came on board. If it was him from the start, he would have gotten you.

At Don’s place, Papa Kuru picked up his phone and turned to Aaron, Aaron nodded in approval, Kuru dialed his moles number. At the mansion, one of the security guards picked up his call

GUARD
(…)(whispering) hello Papa!

He walked away to get out of earshot

KURU
(…) It’s time, get it and get out of there, be very careful

GUARD
(…) yes Papa. It’s going to be really easy

KURU
(…) easy? If you get caught, you better kill yourself fast, because if you fail me, your death I promise, will be slow and painful.

GUARD
(…) ah papa! No, I won’t fail. I said easy because Big Boss is distracted with his visitor.

KURU
(…) What is going on at the mansion?

GUARD
(…) He has a visitor; they say it’s his brother.

Kuru’s expression changed at the information

KURU
(…) who is this brother, did you get his name?

GUARD
Yes, Papa, His name is Michael.

KURU
(…) Michael!

He muttered as he held the phone away from his ear. Aaron and Don turned their attention to him
KURU
(…) (yelling) get that knife and get out of there quick

The guard felt the intensity of his voice and was frightened.

GUARD
(...) yes Papa!

He hung up. Back at Don’s place, Kuru dropped the phone down, looking directly at Aaron

AARON
Your face looks like what Fred’s face should have looked like when you told him I was out.

KURU
Michael! Michael is back.

At the warehouse. Rose was still sleeping, Earnest sat beside her on the sofa, he held her right hand. Ajubo was sitting on the arm chair with a bottle of soda in his hand, he was feeling high on pain meds.

AJUBO
Oboy! I de see rainbow.

He stretched his hands to touch it.

EARNEST
Dude you are tripping; you need to sleep. I don take you go bed twice now and you still come out here.

AJUBO
I feel so good, I don’t need sleep, I just want to appreciate the finer things. I mean look at this room how colourful, why have I never noticed these butterflies. Look they are hovering around that Rose.

He was seeing colours and Rose was a flowerbed.

EARNEST
Hey! snap out of it!

His eyes cleared for a bit and he saw Rose’s and Earnest’s face clearly but all the colors and butterflies were still there.

AJUBO
It’s just Rose! Oboy! Wetin you give me chop?

He laughed like a drunk

AJUBO
Oboy, I de see heaven.

Rose started moving her head from side to side, but her eyes were still shut, she was dreaming.
[The voice of a little girl crying “leave my mummy alone” and the voice of a grown man replied “will you get out of here” followed by the sound of a slap and the voice of a lady cried out “leave my daughter out of this, Rose! go… please go!” the woman cried and the man said “you heard your mum, leave this place, what do you think you can do, beat me? You are just a helpless little girl”. Little Rose’s voice shouted “stop beating my mummy”, the man yelled “will you let go of my leg, I will kick you now, get out of here, get out!” her mum cried “leave her alone you bully, Rose leave the room please, Rose!”.]

She sat up on the sofa and screamed “Mum!”. Earnest grabbed her shoulders to hold her down, she felt a sharp pain on her ribs.

EARNEST
Take it easy Rose, I’m here!

She cried as she rested her head on his shoulder in his embrace, he pats her on her back.

ROSE
(crying) I couldn’t help her; I couldn’t stop him.

Earnest was shushing her, telling her to relax and calm down. She looked over and saw Ajubo giving her the two finger peace sign and laughing, she buried her face in Earnest’s shoulder.

EARNEST
Bae, you have to take these pain meds for relief.

He picked up the meds and gave it to her, she took them

AJUBO
Can I have some more

EARNEST
No! go to sleep
He turned to Rose and helped her lay back on the sofa, she went back to sleep. Ajubo got up and tried to grab some of the pills, he fell on his face.

EARNEST
Are you ok?

He was worried Ajubo might have hurt himself, he went over to help him up as Ajubo didn’t respond, then he heard him snore. He had fallen asleep.


At Don’s place

DON
What’s the deal with Michael anyway?

AARON
You told me he was retired from this life and won’t even return to Nigeria

PAPA KURU
That was what he told us before he left and for the past Seven years he hasn’t been back, no matter the crisis Fredric faced.

DON
Is he so terrible that you are this afraid of him?

PAPA KURU
He was Fredric’s enforcer, he didn’t speak words, he only used his fist, and none of us were a match for him.

DON
That can’t be!

AARON
Oh I assure it can, he is a dangerous one.

PAPA KURU
Why is he back now?

AARON
To support his brother, he always supports Fredric in everything, whether good or bad.

Aaron got up from his seat

AARON
I’m glad he’s back

He walked to the bar and stood in front of the mirror

AARON
I have a score to settle with him too…

He ran his hand down the scar on his right cheek.

AARON
They are both going to pay with their lives.

At the mansion, the guard was trying to sneak into the study, he had managed to sneak past them downstairs and was slowly turning the door knob when he heard Big Boss and Michael coming up the stairs, he ran and hid himself. They went into the study. The guard came out and sighed for relief, he quickly ran out of there.
Big Boss and Michael sat across from each other, Big Boss poured them a drink, the both picked their glasses and sipped, Big Boss relaxed his back on his seat.

BIG BOSS
I’m glad you are back Mike, I know this is very inconveniencing, making you come back to this life again

MICHAEL
This is not the first time you called, this is like what? The 14th time you’ve asked me to come.

BIG BOSS
Yea! But you didn’t come those times.

MICHAEL
Because I kne w you could handle them, and you did. You were just looking for an excuse to bring me back.

BIG BOSS
So why did you come back this time?

MICHAEL
Because you don’t have it under control and my niece has been dragged into it, I realize I have to kill someone to suppress the anger I feel. And now finding out Aaron is involved, I have to be here with you. You remember the brawl we had with him, we all got scars to remember that encounter.

He rubbed the right side of his neck, there was a scar.


At the warehouse, Ajubo woke up from his sleep, he heard Earnest and Rose giggling, he looked around he was in his room, he got up from the bed and walked towards where they were. He found them at the dining table. Earnest saw him and said.

EARNEST
Dude! You are finally awake

AJUBO
How long was I asleep?

EARNEST
About seven hours.

AJUBO
What was that drug

EARNEST
Pain meds with lots of morphine.

Earnest got up from his seat, he walked past Ajubo, tapped him on the shoulder and gestured him to go talk to Rose.

EARNEST
I barely slept watching over you two, let me prepare something for us to eat so I can get some sleep.

He left for the kitchen. Ajubo took his seat and turned to Rose

AJUBO
Actually he was only watching over you.

She didn’t respond, she just drank her tea.

AJUBO
What’s up?

He asked but got no response from her

AJUBO
Oh come on, you almost beat the sh!t out of me, and you are still mad at me?

ROSE
Of course I’m still mad at you

AJUBO
Wait, why are you wearing Earnest clothes, were you guys doing nasty stuffs again?

He smiled, she glared at him side-eyed with a frown on her face

ROSE
Why do you think? Because of you guys I can’t go to my place because Kobolo is out to get me, he must have surveillance at my house.

AJUBO
Are clothes the only things you need from your apartment?

ROSE
Yes! That’s the primary thing right now.

AJUBO
What if I give you my credit card to go shopping, will you forgive us then?
She gave him a wicked smile

ROSE
On one condition.

AJUBO
What?

ROSE
You will go with me, and help me pick out the clothes, shoes and bags.

AJUBO
No problem!

ROSE
Ok then, get ready!

She got up and screamed out to Earnest in the kitchen.

ROSE
Ajubo is going shopping with me!

She hopped to the room, Earnest came out of the kitchen

EARNEST
Dude! You agreed to go shopping with her?

AJUBO
Yes!

EARNEST
You don’t realize what you got yourself into, right!

And it hit him, he was going shopping with a girl, Ajubo rested his cheek on his palms, supported on the table

AJUBO
Gad damn it!

At the mall, Ajubo was frowning.

AJUBO
Gad damn it! This girl think say na yahoo I use get this money?

He rested his cheek on his palm supported on trolley, Rose dragged him from shop to shop asking his opinion about clothes, shoes and bags. He looked at his watch, they had been there for about three and a half hours, he sighed so many times, he looked sideways, they had three trolleys full. She came with another dress and asked his opinion.

ROSE
What do you think about this dress?

AJUBO
(Casually) it’s nice! Can I go and grab a meal at the restaurant, I think I’ve sat out my breakfast?

ROSE
You want to leave me with all this load and to make a choice for myself?

She frowned at him

AJUBO
I can eat later, it’s fine.

ROSE
Good! I think I saw a shoe at the shoe shop that will match this dress, we will go back.
She went back to the dressing room to change out of the clothes

AJUBO
(muttered) Crazy bitch

After going to a few other shop, finally they went to the parking lot with seven trolleys full. Ajubo started offloading the items from the trolley into their car.

ROSE
(Teasing) you are such a nice guy!

AJUBO
I know! Can I go and grab something to eat now and maybe see a movie?

ROSE
(Thought for a while) ok! I will join you.

He locked the car and they went back into the mall.

In a dark room, someone sat in the shadows with legs on the table, tapping his fingers on the table anxiously, someone opened the door and turned on the light, it was Kobolo sitting in the dark.

KOBOLO
Amachree, any show, she don come?

AMACHREE
She still never show up for her house o

KOBOLO
You sure say your boys de keep watch?

AMACHREE
Them don de their sotey them don tire sef.

KOBOLO
I’m tired of waiting, rally all the boys, call everybody, we are taking down Greenish headquarters tonight.

AMACHREE
Yes boss!

He left Kobolo’s presence

KOBOLO
(soliloquized) You are going down, Baron, you are going down!


At Greenish headquarters, Baron was in his office with his lawyer finishing some paper work.

BARON
Can you believe our grains are profiting us more than our prostitutes?

They shared a laugh. At the front gate some bikes and trucks drove and stopped by the gate. Kobolo and his men approached the compound with hankies in bottles their faces were covered with masks to hide their identity. The security guards saw them and alerted everybody. Soon everyone came out with their weapons as infinito reached the gates. Baron heard the commotion and went to look out his window. One of Baron’s boys, Ikomi, walked outside the gate with a rifle, he pointed the gun on Kobolo

IKOMI
This is as far as you go. Take one more step forward and you will greet the devil tonight.

Kobolo halted with his boys and smiled, he looked up at Baron’s office window, Baron withdrew from the window feeling tensed.

BARON
What are these boys waiting for, shoot this people!

From outside Kobolo Yelled

KOBOLO
Indidi! Today your life comes to an end!

Ikomi got mad at the statement.

IKOMI
Are you…!

He opened fire but Kobolo held the gun, facing it up, making Ikomi shoot into the air, before the others could open fire, they dropped dead with a bullet in their heads. Ikomi turned back to see his boys dead on the floor, he was confused as to what happened.

KOBOLO
Seven snipers, I have seven snipers positioned around the building.

Ikomi turned back to face Kobolo and got a bone cracking blow to his face, he collapsed. Kobolo and his boys advanced. Baron backed away from the window, the lawyer was curious as to what was happening out there, he went and took a peek, one of the snipers shot his eye through to the back of his skull, that left Baron petrified. One of his bodyguards rushed into the office.

GUARD
Sir we have to get out of here now!

He grabbed his arm and ran out of the office with him, headed for the back office. Meanwhile, downstairs the clash was heated as both sides fought to their death, shooting and stabbing each other, hitting each other with clubs and stick, Greenish was losing. The guard was clearing Baron’s part, he shot everyone that came close and when he ran out of bullets he used his hands, he grabbed a gun from one of the dead guys and continued. Kobolo and two others reached the office and saw only his lawyer dead.

KOBOLO
Sh!t! It’s not him, guys look out, he is on the run!

He and the others followed the trail of dead men to find Baron

KOBOLO
(over the phone) Snipers at the back, he is coming to you!

The sniper was focused on the back exit door, peeping through the telescopic sight.

SNIPER
Don’t worry, he’ll be dead before the door opens completely.

Baron and the guard reached the exit, the guard brought out a key and unlocked the door, they both ran out.

KOBOLO
Is he out yet?

SNIPER
No boss, he isn’t.

KOBOLO
Are you sure about that or did you miss him?

SNIPER
Some of his boys came out and I’ve taken them down but he hasn’t come out yet

Kobolo followed the trail of bodies until he reached the exit door, he kicked it in and realized it didn’t go outside

KOBOLO
Sh!t! Na tunnel.

It was a staircase that led down into a tunnel. Kobolo and the others pursued by the time they reached the other side they only saw dust in the air, left by a speeding car.

KOBOLO
He got away! Oya! Oya! Oya ! make una burn the place.

All around the compound people were his boys were shouting “BURN THE PLACE!”.
The boys lit their bottles and started throwing it into the rooms in the building and on the grains and then they ran out to a safe distance as they watched it burn, after a while of burning the fire got to the armory storage room where there were all kinds of weapons, the grenade started exploding, causing a huge fire that brought the building crashing down.
The boys got in their rides and got out of the vicinity.

TITLE: CLASH

The next morning at the warehouse, Earnest and Rose were laughing out loud as Rose narrated her day out with Ajubo, mimicking his expressions at the mall. Ajubo just sat there and shook his head while they laughed at him, he picked up the remote, put on the TV and was watching it, then Rose left them alone.
Earnest sighed and his smile turned to sadness, Ajubo turned to him, he notices it

AJUBO
Weitin happen?

EARNEST
I wish say na me carry her waka this waka, I mean these are the kind of moments I want to have with her without any gang harassment.

AJUBO
Chaiiya! Don’t worry, very soon

EARNEST
I don’t see your plan working, you’ve done your damage but our bosses are being diplomatic. Willis even asked us to call off the attack on greenish.

AJUBO
I know this is cliché but, patience

EARNEST
(Bangs the table) I have been patient enough?

AJUBO
Calm down bro!

Earnest exhaled deeply for calm

EARNEST
Just not seeing the result

He got up from his seat and was walking towards his room, when the news came on the TV
“Breaking news, Green’s Seed and Grains Storage Headquarters has been burned down”.
Earnest turned back and walked toward the TV to listen closely, Ajubo put up his hands

AJUBO
That wasn’t me!

The news caster was still reporting, “residents in the area said that about 9:30pm last night masked men came in trucks and motorcycle and attacked the facility, killing the security guards and workers and then they set the place ablaze. One of our Journalist, Jumoke Williams is at the sight with full report”.

Ajubo turned to Earnest

AJUBO
You were saying?

EARNEST
(Astonished) Result!

In the room, Rose was trying to sleep when her phone rang, she picked it up, it was her boss Baron calling.

ROSE
Hello Boss (…) what news. (…) who attacked us?

She got up and went to the living room to see the news

ROSE
(…) I thought you and Willis had a truce, that he’ll give you time to fish out the rogue boys (…) Oki? (…)

She gestured Earnest with her eyes for inquiry, he shook his head to signal “no idea”.

ROSE
Ok, I will be there by noon (…) Yes boss

She dropped the call and focused on the TV as thy showed the ruins of the building, Earnest walked to her

EARNEST
We are sorry?

AJUBO
Well I’m not

ROSE
Why are you sorry, isn’t this the desired result?

EARNEST
You are not mad at us?

ROSE
No I’m not. The sooner the gang is disbanded, the sooner we can be a couple

EARNEST
What are you saying?

Rose turned to Ajubo

ROSE
I’m in! count me completely in.

EARNEST
Wow! That’s great.

AJUBO
Seriously?

ROSE
Yes!

EARNEST
I’m so happy!

ROSE
He wants to see me by noon, he has called a meeting, what would you have me do?

AJUBO
Push his buttons, convince him to wage war on the others.

EARNEST/ROSE

AJUBO

At Baron’s place that morning, he was pacing in his living room, his guard stood by the large window that overlooked the front of the compound while the other were outside keeping a look out. He paced for a while, talking to himself

BARON
(Soliloquizing) was this Oki or Willis, it doesn’t matter anymore, I will destroy them, I will destroy them both.

He picked up his phone and dialed Willis

BARON
Hello (…)

At Willis’ Place Willis sat up on his bed amidst two ladies.

WILLIS
(…) Baron, why do you call me this early in the morning,

BARON
(…) (angry) I thought you were a sensitive person, someone that can be reasoned with

WILLIS
(…) (Calmly) what are you talking about, Baron?

BARON
(…) I asked you to give me time to figure out my boys, but you still ordered an attack on my life

WILLIS
(…) (getting a little pissed) seriously Baron, what are you talking about?

BARON
(…) o quit the ignorant act, your boys planted a bomb in my facility a week ago, and now they’ve succeeded in burning it down last night after a failed attempt on my life.

WILLIS
(…) (took a deep breath) Your boys burned my place a few months ago, I listened to you and gave you penance to find the boys responsible, now you call me up to insult me this early morning. Good! Prepare yourself!

He cut the call on Baron

Baron looked at his phone angry, breathing heavily

BARON
Damn it!

He scrolled through his contacts and dialed Oki’s number

BARON
Was it you? (…)

OKI
Was it me what? (..)

BARON
Was it your boys that tried to kill me? (…)

OKI
What are you talking about? (…)

BARON
They’ve burned down my headquarters.

OKI
(mockingly) Oh my god! I don’t know, maybe some of my boys have gone rogue, don’t worry I will find them and I will get back to you.

He cut the call

Baron angrily threw his phone against the wall and it shattered

BARON
They are mocking me!... They are mocking me!

He was still breathing heavily

GUARD
Boss, you need to calm down!

BARON
I’m going to kill them, every last one of them!


At Oki’s Place, Oki dialed Kobolo on the phone

OKI
(…) Kobolo! (…) so you went for the big one huh? (…) I didn’t think you would go for him (…) yeah, you are always impatient (…) No! I’m not mad at you, but why didn’t you finish the Job, why didn’t you kill him? (…) secret exit underground? That bastard is a genius (…) okay! You need to finish what you started (…) you have to kill him before he retaliates (…)

He went for his book where he wrote all his information.

OKI
(…) Plot 43 old GRA, No.5 Afikpo street Diobu and No. 132 New Road Borikiri (…) he might be in anyone of them so hit them simultaneously (…) finish it!

He dropped the call


At the Mansion, Big Boss came down to the living room and found Michael watching news on TV

BIG BOSS
Yo Mic, Good morning!

MICHAEL
How far!

BIG BOSS
Isn’t there something better on TV, the news is depressing to watch. I don’t want to see this early in the morning.

MICHAEL
Yet, you read the papers early. You have to see this, isn’t this Baron’s headquarters

Big Boss took a closer look at the Tv and realized it was

BIG BOSS
Oh God!
MICHAEL
What is the matter?

BIG BOSS
Oki and Willis called me some months back, and reported to me that Baron’s boys burned down their facility and I was supposed to step in for conflict resolution.

MICHAEL
And you didn’t?

BIG BOSS
I had my own problems to deal with at that time and now this is the repercussion for ignoring it. I should have known they would be dumb enough to retaliate openly.

MICHAEL
I thought you didn’t care about them

BIG BOSS
I don’t give a Bleep, but the mayor is going to be on my neck for this.

Just then his phone rang in his pocket, he brought it out

BIG BOSS
Speak of the devil

He picked the call and put it on speaker

BIG BOSS
Mayor, Mayor! [ Mayor: are you seeing the news] Yes I am [ Mayor: that building belongs to indidi right?] yes it does [Mayor: why was it attacked by armed men] I am going to handle the situation [Mayor: wait, have all the warehouse burning in the past month been gang related?] No! I don’t think so [Mayor: have you lost control over your guys?] do not worry about it [ Mayor: the governor is asking questions now, it’s because of you I am not bringing down the full weight of the law on those mafias, but if you are no longer capable of controlling them, I won’t hesitate to take them out] Your ton is starting to piss me off mayor! [Mayor: I am sorry, the governor was just on my case this morning] I will handle it, goodbye!

He cut the call on the mayor

MICHAEL
Just how many warehouses have been attacked?

BIG BOSS
Everybody’s! and everybody has been reporting everybody to me, I just had my own problems so I didn’t respond.

MICHAEL
So what are you going to do now?

BIG BOSS
I will call a meeting to make them pay reparations to each other, case dismissed.

MICHAEL
Has it become that easy?

BIG BOSS
No! but I’m the Big Boss, they’ll have to take any objections up with me.


At the warehouse, Rose and Ajubo were at the dining table discussing while Earnest was on the phone standing at a corner

ROSE
So what are you saying?

AJUBO
I’m saying since I caused problems for everybody and someone has finally retaliated, the rest might take a queue and retaliate too.

Earnest finished with his call “okay, I’ll be there”.

ROSE
Do you realize what that is going to cause?

EARNEST
(Interjected) guys, that was George, Willis has ordered that we strike Baron at his home.

AJUBO
Whoa!

ROSE
Good luck finding the one he’s at, he has three houses at PH her and we don’t even know the third house.

EARNEST
He said he is at No. 132 New Road Borikiri.

ROSE
How did he know that?

EARNEST
Apparently, Willis has spies on all the gang bosses.

AJUBO
Hmm, that is brilliant!

ROSE
When are you guys supposed to strike?

EARNEST
Tonight!

At the mansion, Big Boss came down stairs and picked up his phone from the bar.

BIG BOSS
Wow, seven missed calls!

MICHAEL
Who is it?

BIG BOSS
(checked his log) it’s Baron, I was going to call him now, but he has already called me first.

He dialed back.


At Baron’s place, Baron was still on the phone with Big Boss

BARON
(…) ok, I will try

The call dropped. His guard inquire of him what he and Big Boss had discussed

GUARD
What did he say?

BARON
He is calling a meeting tomorrow to resolve the issue.

GUARD
How does he plan to resolve this?

BARON
The only way he knows how to. Forcing us to pay reparations, but I don’t want reparations, I want blood! Listen Adaba I want you to call Rose and the others back and tell them to wait for our pickup bus let’s change the meeting location.

ADABA
What are you thinking

BARON
I’m thinking, all my enemies will be in one place and that will be the best opportunity to take them all out including Big Boss.

ADABA
But you said Big Boss was stainless.

BARON
Yes, but I would like to see how that holds up against bombs.

Just then Baron’s cousin came to the dining table with overloaded plate of Garri and soup and started to eat.

ADABA

She left the room

Ajubo turned to Earnest and asked

In the evening, the driver picked everybody with the bus and was driving to the location for the meeting, Rose opened the curtain and peeped outside. The area looked strange to her because she has never been there. Then she heard some bus conductor screaming “Borikiri! Borikiri!” the name sounded familiar to her.

ROSE
(under her breath) Borikiri?

Then she heard a passenger shout “you de go New road?” the bus conductor replied “Enter madam” the conductor stated calling “New Road! New Road! New Road! Hold you change o”.
She became rattled as she realized what that meant.

ROSE
New road!

She said under her breath as she leaned back on her seat

ROSE

At Baron’s residence, a white storey building, the meeting had commenced

BARON
I asked the driver to pick you guys up because no of you know this place, I didn’t want to risk any of you being followed here and I changed the location from our usual place because I couldn’t risk going out and be spotted by my enemies, I’m sure all of you know by now that our headquarters was burned down last night.

Rose was unsettled, she looked at the clock behind Baron and then checked her watch, moments later Baron was telling them the attack strategy on the plans to eliminate all the mafia bosses in the resolution meeting the next day.

BARON
… then you guys will come in and tie everybody….

Someone raised up his hand to ask a question

BARON
Yes, Ibanibo

IBANIBO
Sir, is it advisable for you to go to that meeting, you know they sought to kill you?

BARON
That is not a problem, Big Boss is presiding, no one is going to misbehave. Another thing, it recently came to our knowledge that Big Boss has a stainless charm, I want you to cut that charm from his waist and strap a bomb on him.

Rose was still unsettled, she looked at her watch, she turned her phone on and pressed the speaker against her lap to buffer the sound as the phone came on. She coughed to cover the little sound and apologized.

ROSE
Sorry! I’m feeling a bit sick.

She put the phone under the table and started to type a message without looking the screen at it, when she finished typing, she looked down to scroll through her phonebook, she tapped on Ajubo’s contact and sent the message. Baron noticed her and asked

BARON
Rose! what are you doing?

ROSE
I’m trying to shut my phone down.

BARON
But your phone isn’t supposed to be on right now.

ROSE
I’m sorry sir, I don’t know what is wrong with the phone it just goes on and off on its own.

She brought it out from under the table and removed the battery

BARON
Is it because of the phone you are frightened, lighten up, just listen up, okay?

He asked Adaba to explain the strategies to them.

At the warehouse, Ajubo was watching football, when his phone alerted with a message tone, he picked up the phone and read the message from Rose “D meeyinh is un new rosd, stuk here pls help”. Ajubo read through the text, was confused at first, then he realized, he jumped off his seat

AJUBO
Oh no! no! no! no! no!

He dialed Earnest but he got a service response “Switched off” he went to the truck at the back of the warehouse and picked out some weapons and ammunitions, he put them in a bag, grabbed his car keys and drove out.
On the road, he was driving at top speed, trying to beat time and cover distance. Earnest said they’ll attack by 10pm and the time was 9:11pm. He kept trying Earnest’s number but still switched off

AJUBO
Oh no! He’s going to kill his girlfriend

Earnest was at the back of the van with the rest of the cappa assault gang, the were arranging their ammos as the van came to a stop, Earnest brought out his phone and switched it on before he got down from the van.

EARNEST
Is this New Road?

GEORGE
No this is creek road, Nembe waterside?

EARNEST
Why did we stop here then?

There are some checkpoints at the road at night and a Navy barrack, so we will go to New Road by boat from here, it’s not far.

They went down to the river banks and waited for their ride

GEORGE
The idiot is supposed to be here before we come, why is he wasting our time?


Meanwhile at Baron’s place they were still in a meeting, Adaba was assigning roles to everyone, giving them their assault route and escape plan. Rose was tapping her feet anxiously, she was so anxious and lost in thought, she didn’t hear Adaba call her name, her mind was on the sounds outside, vehicles passing by caught her attention, anyone might be cappa she thought. “ROSE!”
Adaba called, ticking his fingers in front of her face.

ROSE
(stattled) sorry!

ADABA
What is wrong with you?

ROSE
I’m pressed, I’m just trying to hold it in till the end of the meeting.

ADABA
You should go and ease yourself, your mind is not here.

ROSE
I will go but just tell me what I will be doing?

ADABA
We are Baron’s escort, so you will go and unlock the back doors and let the others in when it’s time.

ROSE
Okay! May I be excused?

ADABA
Yes, you are excused.


She got and walked quickly to the rest room, she brought out her phone, fixed the battery and turned it on.

On the road, Ajubo was driving too fast, he was stopped by the police, the policeman approached the car.

AJUBO
Oooooh!

He realized he didn’t have his wallet with him

AJUBO
Officer!

POLICE MAN

AJUBO

POLICEMAN

The policeman peeked at the back seat and saw the black bag

A black escalade pickup stopped for the other policemen, handed them some money and drove away.

POLICEMAN

AJUBO

He brought out his old police ID from the glove compartment, the police man looked at it

POLICEMAN
Oboy, you be bad belle, come de go

Ajubo chuckled and drove away fast. He received a call, it was Rose.

AJUBO
Hello, Rose! are they there yet? (…) oh thank God, you have to get out of there fast, I haven’t been able to reach earnest (…) what do you mean you can’t? your boyfriend is happy to level the building because he thinks it’s empty, do you know how he would feel if you die there, he’ll kill himself (…) just get out of there, I’m on my way.

He dropped the call and accelerated more, he drove past the black pickup, he slowed down when he got to New Road and started searching for no. 132, he soon realized the numbers were scattered, He stopped at a T-junction and didn’t know which direction to take, he parked the car and tried Earnest’s number again, this time it rang, Earnest and the rest had just come down from the boat when the phone vibrated in his pocket. He brought it out, stood still and watched every other person go past him before receiving the call.

EARNEST
Dude what’s up?

AJUBO
Oboy, where you dey?

EARNEST
I just reach New Road now!

AJUBO
Listen, Rose is in the building, the meeting is at Baron’s place here in New Road.

EARNEST
(astounded) what? No na! nooo!

Ajubo got a call waiting, it was Rose, so he accepted and put it on conference call.

ROSE
Are you her yet?

EARNEST
Babe! You have to get out of there fast?

ROSE
You guys are already here

EARNEST
Yes we are!

AJUBO
Well I am here at a junction and I don’t know which way to go, where is the place?

ROSE
I have no idea!

EARNEST
I don’t know either, the spy is leading us there.

Just then the black pickup from the police checkpoint reached the junction, people started coming out of the dark from different direction and gathered around the pickup, they opened the trunk, brought out weapons, Ajubo just watched.

AJUBO
(…)Ok! I don see una

EARNEST
(…) Where you de

Earnest looked around to see Ajubo, now using his ear piece

AJUBO
Na my car park behind una for the bend

EARNEST
Which bend? We no follow road o na jetty we dey, we use boat cross

AJUBO
Then who be this people when de arrange gun and bomb them for here?

ROSE/EARNEST
Where?

The driver of the black truck turned on the inner light, Ajubo grabbed his binoculars and looked through, the driver was wearing a jean vest, Ajubo spotted a tattoo on his right shoulder.

AJUBO
Guys! This is infinito

ROSE/EARNEST
Oh shit!

Rose was more afraid now that in finite was in the picture.

ROSE
Guys this is bad; this is really bad!

EARNEST
This is not going to end well for us, three gangs clashing is a disaster

ROSE
Is Kobolo there?

AJUBO
No I don’t see him, I can’t see their faces clearly.

The mob started moving following behind the pickup truck, as they walked a bit further, Ajubo started his car and turned off the headlight, following slowly and quietly behind.

AJUBO
Rose you really need to get out of there now, they are on the move

EARNEST
And so are we, Babe please! Get out quick!

Their driver made a turn and alerted everyone, “We are here”

EARNEST
Too late

They arrived In front of Barons house, the surrounding was well lit, George screamed “Attack!” the boys jumped off the truck. Barons guards saw them and opened fire immediately. Infinito heard the shots from where they were and they increased their pace. Baron Stood beside the window and watched aghast by the attack, but his guards were in control of the situation as cappas were taking cover behind their trucks- some had been shot dead already.
Rose stood on the toilet seat, peeping through the window, Baron’s guards came out of the compound and continued shooting as they walked closer to the trucks, others were on the top floor of the building giving them cover. Rose was worried about Earnest

ROSE
Babe are you alright

He looked beside him and realized there was no way he would respond to her without the others hearing him as they were all clustered behind the Vehicle.

EARNEST
Damn! This people are alert.

He said generally so she could hear without anyone suspecting

ROSE
(relieved) o thank God!

AJUBO
Earnest you might want to back off now, infinito is at your location.

Infinito opened fire on the guards from behind before they could react, they also shot at the guards in the building. Cappa came out immediately and George called for a truce, he came out with his hands up.

GEORGE
Wait! Let me speak with Justin.

He asked, the driver of the black truck came out and walked past his men to the front, standing face to face with George.

JUSTIN
How did you know I was the leader of this troop?

GEORGE
I know your black truck anywhere

JUSTIN
Georgy Georgy, what do you want?

GEORGE
I want to call a truce

In the building, Baron was now worried so he gave orders

BARON
Get everyone here a weapon and send out the rest of the guards, this is war!

Outside the compound George and Justin were still negotiating the truce

GEORGE
We come here for the same thing, to kill Baron, so make we just do am together and go our separate ways

JUSTIN
So Baron de here

GEORGE
Yes! Him de here

Justin looked over George’s shoulder at the cappa boys for a moment

JUSTIN
Ok collabo

One of infinito’s thug came out of the crowd

THUG
Make we do am sharp Sharp!

He brought out two grenades and pulled the pins, Baron stepped back and yelled

BARON
Everybody! Get out now!

Rose jumped down from the toilet seat and ran out of the toilet. The thug was about to throw the grenades when Earnest screamed

EARNEST
Noooooooo!
