Fully in support of this policy because importation kills home business and turn the country in to dumping ground, any time a country import goods it also import unemployment and provide job for the country where it importing so its high time to belief in our selvesuthor=Busy002 post=82596994]The closure of Nigeria’s borders by Federal Government was undertaken to strengthen the nation’s security and protect its economic interests, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), retired Col. Hameed Ali, has said.

Speaking during a meeting with border stakeholders, comprising freight forwarders and security agencies on Thursday at Seme, Ali said that the closure was not intended to hurt anyone but to protect the nations interests.

“Our interest is to make sure that our country is secure, the well-being of our people is ensured and our economy is secure.

“The step we have taken is in the interest of Nigeria, the step is not to hurt anybody but to protect our own interests as a nation,” he said.

News9naija reports that Ali was accompanied at the meeting by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic, Kayode Oguntuase, Comptroller General Immigration, Mohammed Babandede and Brig. Gen. E.A Ndagi, Coordinator of Joint Border Security Exercise, among others.

The NCS boss said that lots of things had gone wrong regarding compliance with transit of goods, adding that the border closure was to ensure that things were streamlined so that all stakeholders could be back to doing the right things.

“The idea is to ensure that the protocol that is involved in transit of goods and trade facilitation is adhered to so that we will all live and complement each other.

“The operation is undertaken to ensure that we get things back in perspective; we know the right thing, it is well written, we are all aware of it, we used to practise it, so we must go back to that.

Ali said that the freight forwarders were critical stakeholders at the borders and urged them to ensure compliance with the rules regarding transit of goods.

“We cannot do business without you but compliance is lacking between you and our officers. Most of the things we do, we don’t comply with rules and that’s why we end up with weapons, Tramadol that killed our children.

“We end up with ammunition that bandits use to kill our people; we don’t manufacture ammunition in this country, if we do it is only from one source and that source is well protected and documented.

“But today, we have seen many of this ammunition in Nigeria, where are they coming from.

“They have compromised with some of us and some of you and I say to our officers; that weapons, that bullets you facilitate in transiting into Nigeria, you don’t know who will take it.

“The bandits, the armed robbers had no choice, your mother, my children, your sisters might be shot by that weapon,” the customs boss said.

He called for support and cooperation of the stakeholders to ensure the nation is protected.

“We need your support, we need your cooperation and understanding, our national interest is over and above any issue,” he said.

NEWS9NAIJA reports that the joint-border security exercise, code-named ‘Ex-Swift Response’, which was ordered by the Federal Government, commenced on Aug. to secure Nigeria’s land and maritime borders.

Those are imported through our ports and not smuggled in like much of your foreign rice, remember you can still import rice through the ports but it must not be smuggled in

Thought I was the only one who knows this dangote's monopolistic means of making billions. Just watch when his refinery comes on stream, he will influence the government to stop importation of petroleum products, which is invariably good for us, but he is only doing that to his own advantage, that is why most products with the label dangote are sub-standard, from cement to sugar to floor, to noodles to spaghetti
I believe we have several billionaires from every region in this country, why haven't they deemed it fit to go into the refinery business, why didn't you tell them?
For most of you, all you do is critic whatever the government does, even if Dangote prevails on the government to stop importation of petroleum products, it is still to our advantage because billions used in the importation would be saved and used for other things.

Our local rice now is 20,000 per bag, my friend what are portraying. Is this an achievementhuh Some people now are finding more difficult to eat
Some of those countries bombarding us with cheap rice and stuff started off like that.
It's actually an an achievement because farmers would be encouraged to produce more, others not yet into rice will be encouraged to start and with time, prices starts coming down.
You are complaining about 20k per bag when I'm hoping it gets to 50k so that more people would go into farming, more employment too. If you can't afford it there are several sources of carbohydrate, it is not a MUST you should eat rice

Imagine no just imagine if it was only mtn still running telecom in Nigeria
Yeah i thought so
Is Russian economy better or worse today compared to its pre-USSR era despite the "so called" monopolized economy?
Competition opens the market and encourages competition, fact but you should understand that every country on earth has a particular section of their economy that they protect, even the US has been slamming EU, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan etc with higher tariffs on imported products from those countries, the same US with a highly developed economy for that matter.

Your question should be why are other billionaires not emulating Dangote?

Didn't you observe that for some days now, there are hardly any pro Biafra threads again

That is what happens when we are too stubborn. If we cannot do it the simple way, then we must go through the hard way. We are not serious in this country. Who are the people increasing the price of the local rice? Nigerians! The wickedness of the average Nigerian is out of the world, yet we practice religion.

Nigerians and their love for foreign products is on another level. Even when the alternative is available, we go for the foreign product believing they are better. I have a friend with that shallow mentality, and many Nigerians are like that.
On the side of security, this is also a 'spot-on' move.

why won't we love foreign products does the government provide company to produce a durable products for us to consume? See our government is confused they don't know what they are doing, why would you close border when we don't have other means of getting imported items or have a means of getting it locally? At least before you close and barn foreign products you must have a local products which is equal or up to task.

The govt can't be responsible for everything. Blame Nigerians who refuse to do these things locally. I admit the govt is part of the problem, but also, we Nigerians are stubborn lots. We sabotage our own to have those foreign materials. We have the capacity to manufacture rice, but no we won't. When everyone feel the brunt, we face our rice and more people get into the business, competition will drive the price down. Govt can't produce everything, but we as a people can create ways for ourselves by solving problems we are capable of.

Monopoly only exists in your mind bro. Dangote didn't prevent any serious investors from coming in. He wasn't the first in the cement industry. He wasn't the first in the noddles and spaghetti manufacturing companies. He wasn't the first person to be given private refinery licence. Not the first in sugar and flour manufacturing. Your wealthy people in Nigeria are afraid of going into the manufacturing industry, fearing epileptic power supply, shortage of raw materials, high and multiple taxes. They prefer importation and quick profits. Dangote doesn't fear failure. Look at his tomato paste company, still struggling because of the lack of raw tomatoes supply. If that company has been thriving now, I'm sure that you would still mention monopoly. Recently, he just moved into the production of semolina. Tell your wealthy Nigerians, thieving politicians to summon courage and brace the odds like Dangote to go into manufacturing sector of the economy and let's stop shouting monopoly. We're the ones creating monopoly for Dangote. Just about two or three days ago, I read that FG denied Dangote and other companies tax relief

Ibeto cement is still in the business, do your findings. It is all about competition. They claimed that competition leads to quality services and products, and possible reduction in prices. But when Dangote crashed the price of cement some years back, Nigerians mentality was unleashed. Saying that he was trying to drive others out of the business. My question was that, was he selling at a loss?

I didn't understand your point to begin with. Secondly, closing our borders was long overdue, Nigeria economy can't grow with smuggled products entering the country left and right uncontrollably. People smuggle in goods illegally and without paying duties to the government. They effectively reduced the ability of a nation to create jobs through manufacturing industry. No sane country would allow what we were witnessing in Nigeria before now. Benin Republic doesn't eat parboiled rice, yet she was the one getting all the tariffs on parboiled rice being imported into Nigeria. Is that not crazy and insane?
