N90bn FIRS Election Fund: Vanguard Apologises To FIRS Executive Chairman by Upritman(op): 5:41am On Oct 01, 2019
Information Parrot Nigeria

After an earlier apology to vice president, Prof.Yemi Osinbajo over a publication containing libelous allegations that he (Osinbajo) superitended over the spending of N90bn received from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS to finance the electoral victory of the ruling APC in the South-West during the 2019 elections, the Editorial Team of Vanguard Newspaper on Tuesday, Oct.1 2019 has also tendered a similar apology to Mr.Babatunde Fowler, who is the Executive Director of the FIRS.

In the apology and retraction posted on its official news website, Vanguard through its editor said:

"On our website publication of  Monday, September 23, 2019 we published a story titled “N 90bn FIRS Election Fund: Osinbajo’s problem, not 2023 politics.” We have since discovered that the story lacks factual substance and we hereby retract it in its entirety

We tender our profound apology to Mr Babatunde Fowler, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inalnd Revenue Service, FIRS, on whom the story touches directly and the FIRS, for any inconvenience or embarrassment the publication has occasioned them. We hold Mr Fowler and the FIRS in the highest esteem".

Information Parrot Nigeria recalls that the newspaper had relied on the allegations of a former deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, Timi Frank, to publish the news article.

Meanwhile, Mr.Frank has remained unrepentant over his allegations amidst legal threats by Prof.Osinbajo as the PDP and some other groups and Nigerians loyal to it had relied on Frank's allegation to demand for the resignation of Prof.Osinbajo.

This is simple, drag them to court, sue them for libel! How can you publish such a sensitive news on national dailies based on just rumors? Haba! Before you condemn Tunde Fowler, put yourself in his shoes.

For me I won't accept any apology whatsoever if and only if I know my hands are clean.

So a whole national newspaper based it's story on JUST the account of a bitter ex party member without recourse to due diligence.

How could a paper of such repute be that sloppy?
Re: N90bn FIRS Election Fund: Vanguard Apologises To FIRS Executive Chairman by juvewalex(m): 6:42am On Oct 01, 2019
Every sane mind knows it's all fake news , no investigative journalism, authentic verifications etc anymore in Nigeria because no one will be punished for fake news.

Mind you , I'm not saying there's no corruption in the present administration but it seems to be coded and not obvious. Still ,fake news should not fly around.

It was not sloppy, it was deliberate. They never knew VP will come for them.

It's a pity the days of effective, efficient and mass-centric journalism in Nigeria is fast coming/has come to an end.

Those of us who met Abiola's 'National Concord", iwuanyanwu "Daily Champion", Musa YarAdua "The Reporter", the Cheap "AM and PM news", Chidi Amuta the "Post Express", Gani "The Masses", Chris Anyanwu "The Sunday Magazine", Newswatch, Tell, and others.. We know journalism has lost its value in Nigeria.

Another failure of this generation, I wonder what good is left for the next crop of Nigerians.

That was how Dokpesi ran libelous News on MKO Abiola back then, their was nothing dopkesi didnt call Abiola, untill Abiola took him to court and won.. But for Abiola's charitable mind he refused to collect any money as damages from Dopkesi and insisted he apologises on front pagies of all major Newspapers for 21days straight

Exactly.
VP surprised alot of people when he raised "clout" about suing all forms of libel.
Re: N90bn FIRS Election Fund: Vanguard Apologises To FIRS Executive Chairman by LibertyRep: 6:47am On Oct 01, 2019
Unfortunately, those that had read and believed the viral #90billion story may have already formed opinions about the FIRS, Mr. Fowler and ultimately, the VP.

If the newspaper truly erred in publishing such unverified, damaging and libelous story, I strongly believe that mere retraction of the story won't suffices to deter other that might want to tow that line.
