Before now ,we have been talking about the decongestion as if the government of Anambra state did not have a master plan for it.

The government of Anambra state fundamentally have a master plan for it.

The government of Anambra state under Governor Willie Obiano provided a massive park capable of containing 2000 buses at a time .

The idea is to move all illegal parks to the centralized place called (Urban Terminal 1).

Moving of all illegal parks means moving street trading and other activities blocking roads along to the designated place called (Urban Terminal 1).

The Terminal is located between Upper Iweka and Obodo Ukwu road, Onitsha .

Yesterday, 2nd October 2019 ,the Commissioner for Transport Dr C. C Madubuko visited the Urban Terminal 1 preparatory for the relocation of all Illegal parks in Upper Iweka ,Owerri road ,Obodoukwu road etc to the terminal in line with vision of Governor Willie Obiano.

A welcome development. They should tax all vehicles on a daily basis within the parks and provide proper conveniences for passengers - toilets, sitting areas and licensed food stalls. Awka needs the same thing.

Transport ministry also needs to plan towards larger buses in Awka/Onitsha running on scheduled timed routes with proper stops and phase out keke or restrict it to outer areas of the cities. A 30 seater bus with entry/exit doors and a walkway in the middle like the Innoson 6730 can replace the capacity of 10 keke. City centers need to be cleaned up and made pedestrian friendly with proper pavements and removal of all barrow/stand hawkers.

Bros, the plush looking interior and comfy seats of the IVM bus you showed tells me its for inter-city transportation. Long distances.

A bus for intra-city transportation should have simple seats that don't take up space, and this will leave room for many more to be fitted. Also, there should be enough space for standing passengers and those in a wheelchairs, as well as rails for them to hold on to, so they're not sent flying in the event of a sudden breaking!

Public Utilities Commissioner, Engr. Ezenwanne kicks off street lights inspection tour.

In his bid to ensure that the installed street lights across the state are working optimally, the Honourable Commissioner for Public Utilities in Anambra State, Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne yesterday kicked off street lights maintaince inspection tour.

The Commissioner was accompanied by the Anambra Central team leader of the recently commissioned public infrastructures monitoring committee Engr. Nnaemeka Orakwe, Managing Director of the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency ( ATMA), Mr. Pat. Obiefuna, Director of Electricals in the ministry and other memebers of the monitoring group visited some locations in Awka, Awka-Onitsha old road, Nkpor - Ugwunwasike by expressway and other areas in Onitsha.

Speaking during the exercise, Engr. Ezenwanne maintained that the state is aggressively addressing issues concerning failures of some points and reinstalling others knocked down by reckless drivers.

He said; " as you can see, we are here with the MD. of ATMA and his officials so that they can help us with to apprehend some of the drivers that knock down public infrastructures like street light poles. It is not going to be business as usual as anybody caught will pay for the reinstallation of the damaged street light pole and other accessories".

" We are moving around the state with electrical engineers, the street lights maintaince team and some contractors that mounted the street lights, so I can assure you that within two weeks, we must have maintained and reinstalled knocked down street lights in the state", the Commissioner concluded.

Anambra Government says it resorted to using concrete to patch potholes on the roads across the state due to the heavy rains being experienced in the state.

The State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Marcel Ifejiofor, told journalists on Friday in Awka that the use of concrete was a temporary measure to make the roads motorable, pending when the rainy season would abate.

According to him, there is nothing wrong in using concrete to repair roads.

“The intensity of the rains in the last three years is overwhelming.

“It had never happened like this before, and I can boldly say that Anambra roads are better, compared to other states.

“Yes, some of our roads are bad, but we have plans for them. Governor Willie Obiano-led administration is doing the much it can.

“Many of the impassable roads in the state are Federal roads, even [then], we are also working on some of them.

“I want to tell you that there is nothing wrong in patching the roads with concrete. Go to some roads in Victoria Island or VGC in Lagos. So many of their roads are done with interlocking tiles.

“Go to Ebonyi, they have concrete roads. So, there is nothing wrong with using concrete.

“The pressure from the media on the condition of our roads was too much that we had to find a temporary solution, which is why we are using concrete to patch the roads.

“We are coming back to work on those roads with asphalt, but you can never use asphalt when the rains are very heavy.

“That is total waste of money. I’m a certified engineer, so, I can tell you the facts about roads,” he said.

Ifejiofor said the bad roads would be fixed with asphalt before the end of the year.

“Governor Obiano is having sleepless nights to make sure that our roads are motorable. By December, something wonderful will happen on our roads.

“I need to also inform you that a road has expiry date, and roads are built for certain axle loads, that is why you have Trunk-A roads, Trunk-B and Trunk-C roads, depending on the type of vehicles that will pass on the road.

“Because, all federal roads in Anambra have failed, the Dangote trucks carrying 900 bags of cement are plying our local roads which were not designed for that purpose,” he said.

A lot of the local roads that are collapsing in the state were built poorly by the Obi government using sub-standard local contractors with poor drainage channelling and not enough asphalt. The roads built by the Ngige administration and by the PTF fund are still standing with very few potholes because they were built according to spec.

But for roads that is the government's most valuable assets (investment in the hundreds of billions), there needs to be far better management and maintenance of them. Dangote trucks that are destroying state and local roads should not be allowed inside towns but should be forced to offload at nearby depots along the federal expressway and then smaller vehicles can carry quantities to retailers.

Also, the Works Ministry needs to do far better routine road inspection and pre-emptive maintenance. It seems that the Works Ministry waits for roads to collapse before springing into action. This was unlike his predecessor who did not waste time in fixing roads and he was no engineer.

Thirdly, the Works Ministry needs comprehensive drainage plans along with roadwork. Spending billions on roads without ensuring proper drainage is throwing away billions of naira. It is well known that the primary reason roads fail is because drainage engineering is poor or inadequate.

Finally, the Works Ministry needs to prioritize its work plan. Not every road is equal. A lot of roads in cities have far higher economic value than all the rural roads the Anambra State Government has for the last decade been fascinated with. There are more people per sq mile in Awka or Onitsha or Nnewi than in various remote towns and villages. The priority therefore should always be 70% for roads within and leading to cities where most Anambrarians live vs 30% to roads leading to thinly populated villages.

The Anambra Government says not more than 300,000 residents of the state pay taxes out of a population of 4.5 million. Mr Mark Okoye, the State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, made the disclosure at a news conference tagged: “2020 Budget Breakdown” on Thursday in Awka.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov Willie Obiano had on Sept. 24 presented the 2020 budget proposal of N137.1 billion to the state House of Assembly for approval. ALSO READ: We are hungry, thirsty to receive 2020 Appropriation Bill — Lawan Obiano had tagged the budget “Accelerating Infrastructure Development and Youths Entrepreneurship’’,

The governor said that the budget would promote agriculture, social infrastructure development and as well as enhance jobs creation. According to him, N78.3 billion will be spent on capital expenditure, translating to 57 per cent of the budget, while N58.69 billion or 43 per cent is for recurrent expenditure. Presenting the budget breakdown, Okoye said that the state government had put automated reforms in place to capture more residents into the tax net. “From an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) standpoint, we are projecting N30 billion for 2020 which will be N2.5 billion every month.

“As we speak today, we have about 300, 000 taxpayers registered in the state, and we also have about 10,000 businesses registered in Anambra. “I can tell you that of all these numbers, less than 10 per cent are paying taxes and most of them are also paying understated taxes. “If we can increase that figure to 20 per cent, that will take our current IGR rate from N 1.7 billion to N3.4 billion, that doubles it. “This is why the government instituted comprehensive reforms in the state to capture many residents and businesses. “We have the Anambra State Social Service Identity (ANSSID) number and other Automation drives across the state to get data, and also capture many residents into the tax net,’’ he said.

Okoye said that the government needed the taxpayers’ money to drive development in the state. “The money we are using is not the government’s money, the monies are owed by the taxpayers and they are used for even distribution of development across the 21 local government areas in the state. “Payment of taxes will help to scale up the provision of infrastructure and other amenities for the 4.5 million people in the state. “So, there is so much room for growth in the state, if we can do what is required,” Okoye said.
