The governor of Ebonyi State, South-east Nigeria, David Umahi, has ordered his security details to shoot anyone who blocks his convoy, Igberetv reports.

Even if such gunshot results to death, Mr Umahi said, it is still within the law. Governor Umahi gave this order on Saturday while narrating how his convoy was blocked the previous night by mourners at a wake-keep in the state.

The governor’s convoy was reportedly blocked along Onicha Road in Onicha Local Government Area of the State on his way back to the state capital from his Uburu, Ohaozara hometown Friday night.

He alleged that one of his security aides lost his military rifle in the incident. While receiving some guests at the State Executive Chambers in Abakaliki on Saturday, the governor expressed his fury over the incident, saying it is a criminal breach of the law.

He narrated: “Yesterday night, I was coming back by 12 midnight. Of course, I had to stop over at the college to inspect projects, but when we got to Onicha, they blocked the road.

“Even with the litany of army and the police and everything, they did not even want to open the road. Then I said they should arrest all of them, but most of them ran away. I think they even took a gun of an army officer,”.

The Governor further said that those who ran away would still be arrested and imprisoned.

“So the Chairman of the Local Government, the House of Assembly members and coordinators, they are working very hard and the SSA on Security, they are all there to sort it out.

“But I say, all of them will go to prison. So they have to identify them, bring them here and we will prosecute them to show an example,” he said.


Shoot, even to kill to forestall anyone from blocking his convoy in the future, even if like the mourners, they are not armed, Mr Umahi said such persons should be shot.

“Next time the ADC should order for a shoot. It is very illegal to block the governor. And if anybody is killed in the course of that, it is allowed in the law.

“And it is not me that is the problem, it is the common man, nobody should be oppressed…,” the governor said.

The governor also announced a ban on wake-keep extending beyond 10 p.m. in the state.

“And I want it to be announced that henceforth, no wake-keep should go past10 p.m. If you must pass 10 p.m., take written permission from the chairman of the local government, and both the chairman and the person that requested will be held responsible if any problem occurs.

Mr Governor, in as much as I understand your fury, please don't go that way. You know that our military personnels are already trigger happy, and don't respect the citizens life, your call to shoot will be abused and your polical foes will use it against you. You don't use brute force to bring order. No matter your giant strides in infrastructural developments, killing and maiming your people will make your reign end on bad note. Remember, you won't be governor forever. In other news, I admire your courage and good works.

If I could rewind time and change things.
The first thing I'd do is to undo the creation of Ebonyi state from my dear Enugu and Abia states.

I'd also unamalgamate the Northern and Southern protectorates.

Then I'd take back the Nobel prize for Literature from Wole Soyinka and give it to Chinua Achebe.

Then I'd come back to the present totally fulfilled that I corrected 3 of the most grievous mistakes willingly made.

I doubt Imahi uttered those words. I think Igberetv is relapsing back to their horrible era of lies and propaganda.

Why have they been targetting this man who appears to be the best performing governor in the region at the moment?

What exactly has Umahi done wrong? Are they trying to ostracize him like they did Okorocha? How could a governor say these words?

You don't need to block it then stone it very simple let see which one is good for you.

There is no verified report of him giving such order.

I read the punch version, which of course gave a far more balanced rendition (no mention of shooting anyone blocking the convoy) and can appreciate where he is coming from.

His point was what would have happened if it were an 'ordinary' citizen without any escort? He/she could easily be robbed.

Let's face it, as chief executive of the state, he should have been accorded the respect when the mourners noticed it was him. Blocking the road was bad enough, but refusing to open it was the height. He has every right to be angry.

they blocked the British prime minister convoy recently. Who is he? Why did they block his convoy? Those guys maybe security for them to be able to disarm soldier. African politicians always wants to be worship. They should be able to block anyone at middle night.

Meanwhile I doubt this story somehow because from what I heard Umahi attended the burial ceremony of the brother of the former deputy gov.Dr Chigozie Ogbu and while he was about leaving, the riffle of one of his security details , a soldier fell off and a guy picked it and ran away. Since then soldiers were sent to fish him out. They have been unceasing shooting of the gun over there with the residents running for their lives.
