The world celebrates the world health day, today, 10th October 2019.

World Mental Health Day is a day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma.

It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries.

there’s always a theme given for every year’s celebration and the theme of this year is ‘Suicide Prevention’.

Suicide has been a trending issue all over the world, the world has recorded several cases of suicide and they say No! to suicide.

Irukkanews joins hand to celebrate the world health day celebration, and we will be sharing ways to prevent suicide.

Suicide Prevention

A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that doesn’t mean that help isn’t wanted. People who take their lives don’t want to die, they just want to stop hurting. Suicide prevention starts with recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously. If you think a friend or family member is considering suicide, you might be afraid to bring up the subject. But talking openly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can save a life.

To help prevent suicide, the world must understand suicide and understand the signs a person who wants to commit suicide gives.

Understanding Suicide

Suicide is a desperate attempt to escape suffering that has become unbearable. Blinded by feelings of self-loathing, hopelessness, and isolation, a suicidal person can’t see any way of finding relief except through death.

Warnings a Suicidal Person gives

These are the warning signs a suicidal person gives

Any talk about suicide, dying, or self-harm, such as “I wish I hadn’t been born,” “If I see you again…”

seeking access to guns, pills, knives, or other objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.

Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and being trapped (“There’s no way out”). Belief that things will never get better or change.

Unusual or unexpected visits or calls to family and friends. Saying goodbye to people as if they won’t be seen again.

Withdrawing from friends and family. Increasing social isolation. Desire to be left alone.

A sudden sense of calm and happiness after being extremely depressed can mean that the person has made a decision to attempt suicide.

These are how to prevent suicide

1 Speak up if you are worried

If you spot the warning signs of suicide in someone you care about, you may wonder if it’s a good idea to say anything. What if you’re wrong? What if the person gets angry? In such situations, it’s natural to feel uncomfortable or afraid. But anyone who talks about suicide or shows other warning signs needs immediate help, the sooner the better.

Talking to a friend you have feel that wants to commit suicide provides relief, you don’t jump into telling the person ‘i know you want to commit suicide’.you just engage the person in a friendly conversation, you allow him to just express his feelings and his worries to you. Yes! Best topic for this year's world mental health day..please everyone has to stand to erase this sinful act from our generations, especially our teenagers...

My own contribution is....please let's be watchful of what you say to others...Respect people's feelings before you say some stuff to them....we should be very careful on that...our words can hurt most times without you knowing it..
