walezy85:Water hyacinth multiplies every 4-7 days, and it is a very problematic aquatic weed that has spread over 50 countries in 5 continents. No method has been able to completely eradicate it as the seeds can remain viable for 25 to 30 years. It cost thousands of dollars to manage it's proliferation. The problem of this aquatic weed is it's control. Even if you harvest from fresh water bodies, it will start growing again after two weeks. |

Spatta:Bros this big biological explanations might confuse the guy. Simply put water hyacinth are "sea weeds" just like the ones we have around our plants in farms. |

I know 90% of Nlders viewing this see it as challenge and environmental nuisance but It is a raw material . The weed biomass can be used for bioremediation and bioadsorption of metals and pollutants; biogas and biofuel production, composting and vermicomposting, as feed for animals and fish; as carbon source for microbial growth; for various medicinal and other uses. |

Zanillo2:I remember it was bought and planted in our ecosystem around 1984 to check the flooding of some part of Lagos state, particularly VI. Within a short period it became a menace that affected fishing and aquatic lives. I just hope someone rich can see a business opportunity here. From YouTube video I watched it's now possible to harvest and process the plant for human use |

they need to get rid of this ASAP before it becomes a BIG problem. that's a pest, right there. the bedbugs of the ponds and rivers. if nothing is done soon enough, they could grow to entirely cover the width of the lake, hence reducing nutrients and killing aquatic life. The fishing industry could be gravely affected, and this will affect the state's GDP. My opis and onions. |

geesilver:When I inquired as to the origin of that name "Lakwa" that was given to water hyacinth by the Ilaje river tribes, it was explained that "lakwa" is short for the full Yoruba sentence of "La ku wa", meaning go and die. Wondering why water hyacinth is associated with death, I learned that it is common for boats to be TRAPPED for DAYS in DEEP water, by a thick mass of floating water hyacinth through which conventional outboard boat engines cannot make progress. Furthermore, I was told, the mass of tentacles that is the lakwa water weed, would quickly entangle and drown even the most powerful swimmer who dared leave any boat stuck in place by the weed mass. In brackish and tidally salty water common throughout Nigeria's mangrove shoreline, getting trapped aboard a boat for days on end can mean dying of thirst in the midst of abundant UNDRINKABLE water, under the blazing sun, or amid a violent lightning storm, depending on the time of year, and on the fickle finger of fate. Since commuting by boat is primarily an option available to Nigeria's working poor, getting trapped aboard a boat by floating weeds, could spell death for all aboard, since organized rescue may never materialize. Indeed, Lakwa the floating water weed that turns rivers into pastures overnight, has earned its name among those aware of its perils to river transport craft. That said, the menace of lakwa floating weed, is a multi-million dollar business opportunity just BEGGING to be exploited, by the importation of AIR BOATS, from the USA, to Nigeria. Powered by airplane engines mounted in rear-facing cages, airboats are IDEALLY suited to gliding effortlessly over ANY water weed surface, for MILES on end, without breaking a sweat. No Lakwa growth can impede the progress of an air-boat. Why nobody has imported airboats to Nigeria thus far, is a true mystery, because the earning potential of such amphibious craft is ENORMOUS, particularly where floating weeds such as lakwa, are a danger to river transport. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBBt0RB73hY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90Drx6M7VeE |
