The engine control module (ECM) or power train control module (PCM), is one of the most important components found in virtually all modern vehicles. It basically functions as the main computer for many of the engine performance and vehicle driving functions. The ECM takes the information from the various engine sensors and uses it to calculate and adjust the spark and engine fuel for maximum power and efficiency.

The ECM plays a crucial role in newer vehicles, where the ECM controls many of the essential functions of the car. When the ECM has a problem, it can cause all kinds of problems with the vehicle and, in some cases, even makes it impossible to drive. Bad fuel economy can occur due to a defective ECM. A faulty ECM does not let your engine know how much fuel will burn in the combustion process. In general, the vehicle consumes more fuel than it should in this situation. You will end up paying more for gas than you would pay with a functioning ECM.
