The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has said there are plans to review the wages of all political office holders in the country.

“The last holistic wage review took place in 2011 and a new one is being planned,” Ngige told members of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) during a visit to his office in Abuja on Tuesday.

“What is a governor doing with hazard allowance? What hazard when the state is feeding him and his family? What is a governor doing with constituency allowance? The whole state is his constituency.

“These are what will be holistically reviewed.”

Ngige said there was a need to review and streamline the wages and allowances given to political service holders, and the high wages earned by workers in certain government organisations.

The minister said the “government has put up the Presidential Committee on Salaries headed by the Minister of Finance and co-chaired by me” to review the wages and allowances.

He said the committee will look at the wage structure of the public service after the ‘consequential adjustment’ being done presently.

Ngige also stated that the committee was put in place to look at the different wage structures.

“There are people who earn 300 percent of what others earn and they have the same degree.

We may have people in NNPC, FIRS, Customs and others with third-class (degrees) earning 300 percent more than the man with first-class in the ministry.”

The minister noted that there are 12 wage structures in Nigeria and the government will “beam its searchlight” on them.

“Revenue Mobilisation will also look at what is given to political officeholders.

In his reaction, NULGE president Ibrahim Khaleel raised concerns over the non-involvement of the union members in any of Nigeria’s standing minimum wage negotiating councils.

“if NULGE cannot be made a member of any of the negotiating councils, another council should be created for the local government employees as recommended,” Khaleel said.

“We believe we are having a lot of gaps in terms of our role of engagement with the government and our employers and this is very good machinery that we are praying and agitating that we will get it under your leadership, ” he said.

He appealed to the federal government to address the issues.

Politicians are still stealing through contract inflation

This is a welcome development. It can only take a patriotic President like buhari to do this.

If Buhari can make politics unattractive by cutting down cost. If he will be loved more by the masses.

I doubt if the adjustments will make much difference, Nigeria politics has absolutely nothing to do with intellect, what you can do or what you have to offer instead it has everything to do with whom has more money that’s why our politicians steal the way they do. Enough money to sponsor campaigns, bribery, thuggery, judges and lawyers, then to maintain a yahoo lifestyle. There’s no way they can stop stealing.

But if PMB a dictator that he is and that is never going to smell any political office in the future can do this for Nigeria, he will be the founder of a new Nigeria and will be respected as such.

That move is anti-restructuring.

Governors wages is a decision for State House of Assembly. Governors do not have to earn income on same level.

If there are Governors abusing the system the law must be enforced. We have laws against embezzlement, enforce it....but fg setting cap on Governors income is crazy.

Why do you think it is crazy? I am in total support of a holistic review of the wages and salaries of all the political office holders in the country, the cost of governance in Nigeria has become a challenge to our development.
The senate should be phased out or made to function on a part-time basis.
Mehn...Only God knows when Nigeria will have a true ruler leader.

Politics should be made unattractive by downward review of renumerations, make the legislators part-time, scrap the senate, reduce the numbers of reps, adopt fiscal federalism and above all restructure the country. The economy will pick up.

Politics in this country has been made too attractive that's why there's so much chaos and violence whenever it's election time. Everyone is trying to get a slot for reasons other than serve this nation and make it better, this country don tire me.

You'll see politicians doing extreme celebrations after winning elections, even doing Thanksgiving for church, like say them win 'lootery'.

Long overdue.

i have a relative who is on the security detail of the Benue state governor. he says they are given an average of 100k to fuel their hilux van after return from a journey of 2 hours. now imagine 10 cars on the convoy.
No meaningful development can take place if we continue like this.
