H isn't silent in Happy so the teacher is wrong.

Instead of going to confront the teacher, I'll suggest removing your niece from the school to prevent more miseducation

She's very wrong

She should be fired ASAP

Who knows what she has been teaching her students

This case should be taken seriously by reporting the teacher to the school heads

The appropriate article that should be used is "a". The 'h' in happy is not silent nor is it a vowel. It is unfortunate that mother tongue interference has taken a turn on the teacher. I teach English too.

This is an educational thread and not an opportunity to bash other people's tribe like it's only Yoruba people who make such mistake. The error the teacher made is a general thing. Just answer the question and move.

Please I need urgent and clear answer on this. An assignment was given to my niece to complete the following sentences with (a) or (an) and one of the questions is
-------------- happy girl.

I told her to fill it with (a) but the teacher marked it bad, I wrote on the book and asked if the "H" is silent in happy and she wrote back that it is a vowel.

I want to go there tomorrow but I want different views on it first.

The teacher is wrong. Though there are exceptions like "hour" , "hospital", but the H is happy is pronounced with the article "a" and not "an". Her tribe shouldn't be an excuse for her incompetence though

Hospital is not an exception dear. The 'H' in hospital is a consonant. So it's 'a hospital'. An hour is correct though

Letter H is a consonant sound. The "H" in happy is voiced. Hence, the article for words beginning with a consonant sound "a" not "an" is used for "Happy"

Other words with voiced "H" sounds such as House, Home, etc take "a". But some other words such as Hour, Honour whose letter H is voiceless begin with "an"

See image.
silent, not voiceless

The Vowels are five and 'H' isn't inclusive. Telling you that obviously points to the fact that she doesn't know what she's doing.

...

Let me explain it professionally.

H is a consonant, but its pronunciation starts with a vowel, so it goes with the article "an." This is only true if the "H" stands on its own. An H.

The phonetic transcription is / eɪtʃ /.

The initial vowel is / eɪ / which is found in the letter "A."

When the letter H is used with other letters to form a word, it loses the / eɪ / sound and the article "an" to the article "a."

So, it's an H (standalone), but a ha-ppy girl (h with other letters).

In some words, the "H" becomes silent like "herb, hour, etc." and the first vowel sound the word makes takes in the article "an."

A happy girl.
An (h)erb.
An (h)our.

Why "an herb?" Because the "h" is silent. Though, there are people who include it. In that case, the "H" isn't silent and it will be "a herb." Mostly British.

100% Americans will say, "An herb," but 50% of people in Britain will say, "A herb," while the other 50% say, "An herb."

Words that start their sounds with a vowel sound, no matter the spelling, goes with "an," while the ones that start their sounds with a consonant, no matter the spelling, goes with the article "a."

The moment you focus on the sound, not the spelling, you'll get the answer right. So, that's it.

I have written an English book all Nigerians need to read.

My dear, the teacher is very wrong. "H" is consonant and is never silent in "happy." U can only use article "a" on consonant words that have vowel sound when pronounced, such as hour, honour, heir and so on so fort.

I know that there are exceptions to the rule but is H silent in "happy" does it sound like a vowel when pronounced? I know that "an" can be used for "hour" because it sounds like our when pronounce and even in heir but h in happy sounds like h which is consonant. Please throw more light because I'm here to learn. Thank you.

Thank you for educating us . Can we have a graduate and professional english teacher finalize discussion from a position of an authority otherwise , I will just agree with you and move on, English is not my mother's tongue biko.

Nope. If it starts with H but is pronounced with stress on the vowels, you don't use 'a'

Like an hour

For 'Happy' you use 'a happy girl.' Not 'an happy girl'
