Nigeria-Benin border closure: Ghana secures temporary corridor

Nigeria Ghana Ministers
Nigeria's Foreign Minister in a hearty chat Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and Allan Kyerematen

Ghana and Nigeria have agreed on the creation of a temporary corridor on Nigeria’s western border with Benin, where Ghanaian goods in transit from Benin, and vice versa, can pass to avoid collateral damage arising from the closure of Nigeria’s borders with Benin.

The Ghana Government is also expected to provide further information on Ghanaian companies that do business in Nigeria, the goods and companies affected and those likely to be affected by the closure of the borders, as well as stranded trucks at the borders to enable Nigeria's officials to better identify the Ghanaian traders.

The decisions were reached when the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Shirley Ayokor Botchwey, and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyerematen, held talks with their Nigerian counterparts on the border closure in Abuja last Wednesday.

While Ms Botchwey met with Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Mr Geoffrey Jideofor Kwusike Onyeama, Mr Kyerematen held discussions with the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment of Nigeria, Mr Otunba Niyi Adebayo.

Abuja meetings

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday said the Abuja meetings were aimed at discussing further ways of providing a path towards resolving the challenges facing Ghanaian companies and traders following the closure of the Nigerian borders.

Nigeria partially closed its borders with Benin in August this year to curb the spate of rice smuggling which Africa’s most populous country said was threatening its attempt to boost local production.

Additionally, the move was aimed at stopping the movement of illicit weapons and other smuggled goods through the various entry points.

The closure, however, has affected the movement of goods and services from the West African sub-region into Nigeria through that section of the country’s border.

The Foreign Minister’s trip to Abuja was pursuant to ongoing efforts by the government of Ghana to ensure the safe passage of goods to Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region.

Relations

During the meeting, the Ghanaian Foreign Minister acknowledged the long-standing cordial relations and cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria.

She also acknowledged the value of the combined strength of the two countries in working towards the prosperity of their citizenry.

Mr Kyerematen, for his part, re-echoed the sentiments expressed by Ms Botchwey, while observing the compelling circumstances that led to the Abuja trip.

Ghana not target

For their part, the Nigerian ministers reiterated the fact that the closure of the borders was not targeted at Ghana but aimed at fighting against nefarious activities across those borders.

Yes I agree with you on ECOWAS unity, I do not think Benin Republic care is because it has a border with Nigeria so they can smuggle goods to Nigeria anytime the main issue is Togo and Ghana which do not share land borders with Nigeria. In fact now most of the goods are smuggled from Benin Republic into northern Nigeria like niger state. It is even more profitable for the Benin people to smuggle with the goods into Nigeria through illegal routes they don't pay any tax or anything to the Nigerian officials

Nigeria approves construction of Bakassi Deep Seaport

Nigeria approves construction of Bakassi Deep Seaport

Nigeria approves construction of Bakassi Deep Seaport
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the construction of Bakassi Deep Seaport which is currently ongoing. Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade announced the report and said that the approval has paved way to launch the port on a commercial scale.
“We have got the official approval for the Bakassi Deep Sea Port Outline Business Case which means that the Nigerian government has now officially recognized the Bakassi Deep Sea Port and has given us the impetus to go for the full business case,” said Prof. Ben Ayade.

Bakassi Deep Seaport
The Bakassi Deep Seaport is to become the second trade port in Nigeria, after the Apapa port and would be the maritime gateway for the country’s landlocked northeast. This is because the rest of the ports are oil terminals.

The project development is supported by the interim transaction advisors, The Infrastructure Bank, and China Harbour. The project entails an evacuation corridor and a six-lane highway linking the port with the north. The proposed six-lane highway spans 162 miles across the length of the geographical space of the state from Bakassi in the South up to Northern part of the state which borders with Benue state in the North Central Nigeria.

The 20-metre-deep harbour will cost approximately US $800m, and will be built via a public-private partnership (PPP). Upon completion, the Bakassi port will reduce congestion faced in Lagos ports and the Onne West Africa Container Terminal in Rivers State. It will also aid in transportation of farm produce from the north to other parts of the country.

“The outline business case proposed a 20-metre-deep harbour for transnational shipping, making it “the deepest seaport in Africa,” said Governor Ayade

Why is it Nigeria can develop multiple Mega projects at ounce with many more entering or moving past the preproduction phase while Kenya struggles to move a single one beyond preproduction and Ghana cant even get one in to preproduction? Yet they come here and swear superior rapid development? grin

what do you have upstairs? for devil sake. this news is more important to Ghanaian than to Nigeria as it speak for itself. if Nigeria media failed to to broadcast the metting and Ghana news house broadcast it . what is the big deal? or are you indirectly saying it is fake because it is coming from Ghana media house. what a brain do you have up there? look Guta ( association of Ghana trader are taking this case seriously) . infact they are pushing the goverment to implement the local laws that bar foreing traders from operating without having a certain amount of dollar. they are seeing it as what Ghana can capitalised on. Ghana goverment is just been diplomatic by visiting Abuja to have the case sort amicably. just to fight for kinapharma and Kaseperoko( Ghana leading product in Nigeria) that is it.

This is the same way you challenged me regarding your mouth watering professor and called it a fake news not until the video was circulated on most social media. anyway the meeting can be retrieved from YouTube if you so like to know. Nigeria representative was there giving a case for Ghana. Ghana is in the top 10 of Nigeria trading partner, Ghana does not even have Nigeria in first fifteen. Ghana is also the largest trading partner for Nigeria in west africa . over 900 million dollar is at risk here .

guy humble your arrogance . this is Nigeria media house reporting the news. ( called it fake because is coming from Sahara reporters.

Nigeria approves US $302m for road projects

The Federal government of Nigeria has approved US $302m for road projects in the country. Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola confirmed the reports during a briefing on the outcome of the Council meeting held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa.

The Minister explained that US $220m will be used on the Ibadan-Ilesha–Ife dual carriageway project which upon completion, will connect Oyo and Osun states. The remaining US $82m will be spent on phase two of the Kano–Katsina dual carriageway, starting from Gidan Mutun Daya to Katsina Rolling Mill, Katsina State.

Also Read:Ghana begins rehabilitation of roads in Ayawaso West Municipality

Road projects
The Kano–Katsina road was a single length highway until it was awarded in 2013 by the previous administration in phase one and expanded into a dual carriageway. US $553m was also approved for construction of link-roads, connecting the second Niger Bridge to Asaba and Onitsha.

“This completes essentially the access road that will link the bridge in the short time. These roads were under-designed when the bridge was awarded. Our administration completed the design and we have now awarded them. The roads were initially awarded under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the bridge in 2010 administration,” said Babatunde.

“What we have now done is to complete the award to the same contractor, so that there is a uniformity of construction,’’ he added.
