Second Niger Bridge Suffer Setback As Host Communities Demand For "Entitlements" by seunfly(op): 5:03am On Oct 21, 2019
Work stopped at the site because communities are demanding projects worth N500 million, while workers are seeking promotion and increase in allowances.

The Controller, Federal Ministry of Works in Anambra State, Adeyemo Ajani, has said the second Niger bridge may suffer a serious setback if the government does not intervene urgently in the crisis between the contractors and host communities as well as workers.

Ajani, in an interview with Daily Trust, said work had stopped on the second Niger bridge and if there is no quick intervention, it might affect the scheduled date of completion.

According to him, work stopped at the site because communities are demanding projects worth N500 million, while workers are seeking promotion and increase in allowances.

The controller added that the project did not have any issues in terms of funding, but that the communities were trying to delay its completion.

Some communities from Anambra and Delta states stopped work at the site, alleging that the project manager "has not given them their dues".

Ajani, said, ‘‘Each community is demanding a project worth N50 million and by the time it is calculated, it will amount to N500 million. Where can such money come from?

"Even the Works Tender Board cannot approve that kind of money. It is only the government that can address it and that is why we are seeking its intervention”.

He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the communities and the contractors had yet to be signed due to the demands.

Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Whatever sacrifice to make to enable the project's completion should be made. Don't lose on the altar of selfishness.

Igbos are not really interested in that bridge, they will prefer to be using it as a political demand and blackmail so building it will just kill one of their blackmail

They prefer you share the money for that bridge to them.

They will soon blame it on Buhari now, when it is obvious this is meant to make him look unserious about it.

That explains it.

naptu2:
Two interesting items on the NTA News.

The weird thing is that the NTA reporters left the most important parts of both reports until the end.

1) They reported that the Customs Service was handing over military vehicles that were seized by the Customs and the SSS at the Cameroonian border (in Adamawa State) to the United States Government. That sounded strange. Why is the Customs Service handing them over to the US?

Anyway, they showed the comptroller of Customs in the area and he was with the US consul general and someone that looked like a US defence attache. The comptroller said that the order to hand over the vehicles came from the national security adviser and he had to comply. He said some things that made it seem like the hand over process was not entirely smooth and that he didn't know why he was being asked to hand over the vehicles, but that he was doing as he was told to do and that diplomacy had prevailed. The US consul thanked the comptroller and said that although there had been some bumps on the road, but that the good relations between Nigeria and the US had prevailed.

While signing off, the NTA reporter said that the vehicles were meant for a US military operation in Niger Republic, but they were seized by the Nigerian Customs Service and the SSS at the Nigerian border with Cameroon.

2) There was a report about the Second Niger Bridge. They showed equipment at the site of the construction and interviewed people in the area who said that a lot of progress had been made. They talked about the history of the project and all of that, but, they had a telephone interview with the controller of works in the area at the end of the report and he said that they had done the piling works right across the river and they were about to start the decking, that is the roadway itself, before this strike action started.

That is the truth.

To an average Igbo, if there is no money to be shared, he or she is not interested.

Igbos actually coined the PDP slogan “PDP !!! Share the Money!!”

That is why up till today, majority of them still deny the existence of the bridge because they simply don’t want it done

The 2 State Governors of Anambra and Delta along with the Ministry of Works should be swift on this. This project is far bigger than these communities.

Because of Nigeria factor, something should be given to the communities, but it should be treated as a gift not a demand. Left for me not even a Kobo.

What entitlement is more than building a community developmental infrastructure? I weep for the easterners. In fact, president Buhari should withdraw the project and site it in states that are serious about development. Who the gods want to destroy, they first make him mad.

This is where traditional leaders should come in. If they can't resolve this, then their position is useless, and should be disbanded.

I know this lies & slandering will come up as long as it concerns development in the SE/SS region. What is happening to the Niger bridge is what is also happening to the Ogoni clean-up & the East West road etc. But when it concerns taking oil from the Niger delta by the parasitic regions, they will deploy all the military apparatus & might to destroy any uprising or dissenting voice. e.g Ken saro wiwa.
