I am not an engineering student but from basic laws of physics. Thrust is one of the four forces that maintain a plane travelling in air if thrust is not produced. I dont think the remaining three forces can suspend a plane to be stationary in air.Because the dour forces must be balanced
I may be wrong though

It might have been your point of observation, parallax error, no normal passenger plane can do that. And we don't have ospreys in Nigeria. They are one of the aircrafts that can hover like a copter

It is a normal occurrence. Planes are known to suspend itself on a spot for minutes.

I have seen something like that before around Ikeja, it was going to land and was low to the ground (I mean it was visible that it was stationary for some seconds before it moved again)
