If 2nd Niger Bridge Was In Lagos, Would Tinubu Allow Anyone Demand Settlement? by 9jatriot(op):
Before you start arguing, note the difference between settlement and compensation. Compensation is normal anywhere in most part of the world where indigenous people in an area where development is about to be located get compensated usually by providing them with new houses if their houses will be affected and providing them with new sources of livelihood and sometimes totally relocating a community. This is usually between the government and the local host and nothing to do with the contractor.

The issue of settlement is believed to have stated in the South South, some believe that Warri was where that tradition started where you had to settle the local touts who felt entitled some form of settlement which they named "deve". Usually these people get violent and disrupt your project if you are not willing to play ball.

There are omoniles in Lagos who demand settlements and disrupt projects undertaken for projects but for big projects that affect Lagosians, I do not think a man like Tinubu would allow anyone disrupt some a project. Call him whatever name you like, but legend has it that when Dangote was to build his refinery, some of the places he wanted to use demanded outrageous amounts for compensation, kickbacks and settlements. It is believed that as soon as Tinubu got wind of it, he requested Fashola to make the Lekki Free Trade zone available to Dangote to site his refinery. I can tell you that even now that the refinery is yet to kick off, there are massive job created in that area because of the construction phase.

There is no zone in this country that does not have some sort of leader and in some states, they have more than one, but the truth is many of them are extremely selfish, self centered and myopic, often not visionary or intelligent enough to see the long term effect of their actions.

The government is running a blackmail campaign against people over this 2nd Niger bridge issue.
It has never been about settlement but the minister is making it look so and saying it is stopping the bridge project.

Lies!

How come they are showing us pictures of workers on site and ongoing work progress if it is being stopped. Is that not because no one is stopping or interfering with the actual bridge project.

The issue there is on compensation for people who are affected by the connecting expressways to the bridge.
I am saying this not because I am guessing but because it personally affected me being in one of the communities the road is going to pass through.
How do you plan on removing people from their ancestral homes, remove fillings stations, factories, farms, shrines and you never planned compensation? And they are quoting N500m as what people are demanding.
Why is the South east always on the receiving end of blackmail like this.
Is it that they never truly wanted to do the bridge and is now looking for excuses to abandon it.
