IgbereTV reports that a former Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Amb. Yerima Abdullahi said the first Prime Minister of Nigeria, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (1912-1966), knew that there were deposits of oil in the North but didn’t want to explore it He said that Balewa's intentions were to allow the younger generation to explore the oil.

Yerima said the discovery of oil in the North, particularly the recent one in the Gondola Basin, has gone to prove wrong their detractors who view them as parasites.

Recently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation recently announced that it discovered hydrocarbon deposits in the Kolmani River II Well on the Upper Benue Trough, Gongola Basin, in the North-Eastern part of the country.

Abdullahi said those describing the North as a parasite on others have to eat their words and be ashamed.

He said, “The future is now. Fortunately, the oil was found in Bauchi, which is our home. We expect many other mineral resources such as gold and copper to be discovered, and not just oil, in the North. Oil and gas existed before we were born. Even our elders, including the Tafawa Balewa government, knew but decided not to make so much noise about it, but to leave it for the younger generations.”

“We are glad that oil has been found in the North and it will add to Nigeria’s wealth because we believe in the unity of the country. We don’t begrudge any part of the country or Nigerians from partaking in the wealth God has given us."

Also, Bauchi State Governor Inuwa Yahaya who also made his mind known, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ismaila Misilli, has welcomed the discovery of hydrocarbon deposits in the Kolmani River II Well on the Upper Benue Trough of the Gongola Basin.

He said, “The development will change the economic fortune of the state and the North-East geopolitical zone, stimulate job creation and ultimately lead to job creation and wealth for the people. The North is not bothered about resource control. An average Northerner believes everything in the country belongs to the whole country. That is why you see us (Northerners) accommodating people coming from far and near. This (oil discovery) will not change our mindset.”

But the discovery wasn't in commercial quantity in the upper benue area. Let exploration also begin in those areas. OP, the governor of bauchi is bala Mohamed, not Inuwa yahaya.

I think, your right

Ambassador Yerima Abdullahi doesn't know the meaning of a parasite. A parasite depends on its host for survival. Having oil in the north doesnot automatically change the fact. The oil from the north must be explored and contribute far more to the gdp more than what is coming from the south in order to change that fact. For now, any definition of parasitism the ambassador gives is a lie. He should also know that agriculture can give more than oil if properly managed. The world is gradually moving away from oil, Nigeria and by extension the north should not be left behind.

True lies! The day crude oil will be discovered in large commercial quantity that is the day the core north will leave the Nigerian federation.

When he says oil does he mean groundnut oil? Because the whole world knows that fossil oil (crude) can never be found in the north.

We get unnecessarily emotional over NOTHING! Almost every country in the world has hydrocarbon deposit, however, the meat of the matter is if it is in an economically justifiable quantity.

I doubt NNPC would be the sole prospector in that area if the deposit there was worth it; when the likes of Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Total, Agip etc. are still in the business.

The issue is obviously one fraught with so much politics.

Picking offence for what exactly? If u digest my comment u will know it' totally different from ur points.
Oil is becoming old content in the world now as there r massive development currently ongoing in the area of electric cars. Nothing concern me with parasite and name calling. Generally i will assume u don't mean to quote me!

I still don’t understand why some of you desperately try to downplay any news of a possible discovery of crude oil in other parts of the country. Why do you hate your country that much?

If resources are found in other regions, the proceeds will still be pooled together and shared to all states in the country. So, what’s so bad in discovering crude in the north?

Even if you argue that the north will secede if oil is discovered in commercial quantities, is that not what your folks have been fighting for? I think the news should make people like you happy and not sad. I don’t get why you’re so bitter about it.
