Osinbajo Explains Why Border Was Closed Completely, Begs Nigerians by ucvibes(op): 8:39am On Oct 27, 2019
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has pleaded with Nigerians to bear with federal government over the complete closure of the country's land borders. This Day reports that Osinbajo made the plea on Friday, October 25 while attending a town hall meeting in Edo state.

According to the vice president, the border closure became necessary in the bid to sound out Nigeria's seriousness to its neighbours. Osinbajo explained that Nigeria would be killing its own agricultural sector and indirectly its economy if it continued to allow smuggling in of contraband products through the borders shared with neighbouring countries.

Osinbajo said Nigeria wants neighbours to take the country's reforms seriously in his response to the lamentation over high cost of food by vice president of Edo market women, Christiana Omokaro.

No pain, no gain. Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Niger Republic. Chad Republic are begging Nigeria to open its borders complaining that their Economy and their people are suffering. Does it mean that all these countries rely on Nigeria to survive? Even far away Indonesia, Thailand and India are begging Nigeria to open its borders. So these are the countries that have combined with saboteurs among us to ruin the country.

Anything we cannot produce, should not be used in Nigeria. If we cannot grow and process ordinary rice, then let's be eating garri, fufu, amala and beans, we was not die. If we cannot produce vegetable oil, then let's be using red oil even to fry eggs, we won't die. A cost that cannot feed itself is now talking about industrialization.

If India, Thailand, Indonesia still want to be selling rice to Nigeria, let the come and least land in Nigeria, grow the rice here, process it here and sell to Nigerians. Anything short of that is a no, no.

The rice exporting countries are heavily reliant on the Nigerian market

- Reports say the wholesale price of top exporting countries fell on product glut resulting from a decline in exports

A report by Business Day indicates that the closure of Nigeria’s land borders aimed at curbing smuggling activities, especially of rice, has taken a toll on rice-exporting countries.

According to the report, the price of the commodity dipped by a joint 46 percent in one month in countries like Thailand and India.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Wednesday, August 21, ordered the closure of the Seme border.

Between that period and September, the wholesale price of the broken parboiled rice, the species in top exporting countries fell on product glut resulting from a decline in exports.

In India, the wholesale price dropped from $0.64/kg in August to $0.40/kg as at 30 September of this year.

In Thailand, the price of the commodity declined by 9.2 percent in the review period.

Data from both Thailand and India, which previously accounted for up to 90 percent of Nigeria’s rice imports, show legal imports to the country have declined at the same time.

Meanwhile, there are fears that Nigerians may buy a 50kg bag of rice for as high as N50,000 in December 2019 if the land borders remain shut by the federal government.

GDP might not be affected by the ban since we were importing more and not producing. Infact it might go up if we produce more to consume and export than importation. Unemployment rate might slightly increase temporary because of some persons involved in smuggling but it would be a bless in disguise if the government stick to this policy on the long run.

This one is only pain because there is no way Nigeria can compete with the civilised world in growing rice. NO WAY. Nigeria cannot produce oil or gas efficiently, cannot refine the little oil we produce, cannot produce power based on that oil, cannot produce steel, cannot produce enough engineers only half-basked ones, cannot build universities, cannot graduate secondary school students without them being kidnapped, cannot even run almajiri schools with chaining young students. In short we can't do anything simple and yet we want to compete with countries like India and Thailand in rice-production.

This stupid Buhari government needs to focus on the things I listed above instead of blaming Nigerias lack of rice production on the seme border. If not, we are laying the foundations for suffering, violence and destabilization in the whole West Africa.
