She earns N430k;
She got an offer of N850k;
Her current company didn't want her to go, so they matched the figure;
Now she is dazed.

Could it be a trap? Why didn't they do this before now? Is staying a good decision? Will she regret staying or leaving?

She is absolutely confused, what do you advise?

My honest advice, please Op, if you are the one or your friend is involved, run as fast as you can to the new job. The increase of salary in present company is a veeerrry biiigg trap. Be warned, run my fellow nairalander, run

That means her firm have been scamming her off her sweat. Personally I won't want to work with such firm again, she should quit and join the new firm that is aware of her worth.

By the way, I have increased my standards, if a lady isn't earning up to 850k, sorry I can't date. grin

tell her to leave. It's always nice to try new places. There's no guarantee if she stay with the former company they won't sack her.

Meet men of God, I mean men of God at least 3 separately. They'll pray for and with you. Whatever good message they give you that cuts across the 3 of them confirming each otherr, go for it

People who actually earn that much are often too skilled and knowledgeable to be seeking career advice on Nairaland.

Eggzactly o, my brother.
It seemed somehow, to me.

Stay with the company. This happens every time, when you newly join a company, you are inexperienced or not as much experienced so your pay may be lower, over time, your salary should be reviewed. However, except there is a general salary standard for that position, your salary may not be reviewed on time, for obvious reasons.

She should stay with her company because for them to increase her salary, it means they know her value and they are willing to match her new offer to keep her based on her current performance, it will show that she is committed to the company and the company will be indebted to her, they will also understand that she is valuable and can easily get a new offer elsewhere.

This new company will not value her as much, they believe they are offering her better than what she’s earning before and as such there’s no where better for her to go. That if her previous place was better, she wouldn’t have left, for offering her better than what she’s currently earning, they will expect her to perform wonders, putting her under serious pressure.

And by the way, she will soon find out that N850k is not so much.

in my own view it is better for her to leave because her salary may have been raised above a lot of person's there. The company may not be able to sustain what that increment will cause to other staff. also she does not stand any further increase for a good number of months or years. I think she should leave.

Guy, no be lie o. I know many people/friends that earn more than that. Especially a friend just resigned from where he earns 900k monthly, I saw his former payslip so it's confirmed. He got a new one with Seplat. I didn't see his new payslip but definitely can never be less.
So wake up! Lagos especially pays well

Maybe she is productive. She must be good at job, maybe that's why she got that increase. She should stay, because she is a valued asset.

Employers surprise me. Those that earn up to #250 000 don't have to kill themselves unlike where an employer pays #30 000 and makes sure you don't enjoy it with hard labour.

I recommend going with the company that has the financial backbone to pay well. If the old company cannot and is baiting, she can confirm to see if they are capable or not. Also, if there exist others who are on her level earning the N850k she can consider staying but if she is the only one, it most likely is a bait to keep delaying her from joining the competing new company so that secrets would not be passed along and opportunity is lost.

If she is to stay, the new appointment has to be in solid gold tablets and not just word of mouth but still she has to be sure the financial statement of her company of choice can really foot the bill conveniently month in month out.

Wishing you well - Teemy
