Ha. I feel these banks get a percentage of all USSD charges from telcos.

If you have used Ecobank ussd, then you’ll understand.

Let me explain.

I have a Firstbank account and when you need to make a transfer you simply dial *857*amount*account number#. Now, no matter the account number you put there, the Firstbank system will automatically know which bank’s account number it is and fetch the correct receiver’s details. All that’s left for you is to confirm by entering your pin code. Same thing applies for airtime recharge, just replace the account number with a phone number and they automatically detect which network it is.

With Ecobank, if you enter their short code -as claimed on their site and other resources-that is, *326*amount*account number# or *326*amount*phone number#, it will bring up their ussd base menu-everytime. Now see where using Ecobank’s ussd burns my airtime:

*326# base menu -> send and receive -> interbank transfer-> select your own account -> select which bank you’d like to transfer to -> enter account number -> enter amount -> confirm by entering pin number.

As you can see, there are 8 steps to follow and since the were charging an average of N3, that’s a whopping N24 just to make a transfer.

Mind you 2 out of 3 times, the transfer will always fail on the first try, making you try again the second time, that’s N48 gone. Their system always fails in the middle of a ussd transaction most times too so that’s more airtime sucked away. I can’t be the only one to have observed this, I’m sure there’s someone out there who has also noticed.

He also charged other banks to follow suit and added that if there are no charges, Nigeria could attain 90 percent financial inclusion.

What you said is actually not correct. A session which is 120seconds is just N20 but reduced to N4. You need not have credit on your line before you use the USSD. Maybe you were talking about when the service first started but that is what applies now.

I doubt it is charged per session but per ussd menu that loads up.

I’ve had N22 on my phone before but after going through all the processes of transferring on Ecobank, it told me at the end that “the request cannot be completed because you don’t have enough airtime” so it definitely was not per session. I’m sure of that because I had to pay a merchant the day it happened and I was being hurried.

It actually got scrapped yesterday. Apparently, the MD made the declaration at a fintech conference yesterday.

Honestly, as of last year, UBA and MTN didn't charge me for ussd transactions. Don't know of this year cause since the turn of this year, local man's account has been dry like dry season.

Stanbic bank and access can gulp all your credit and even give you failed transaction
