I don't subscribe to your barbaric first 3 lines... But, you are right in your last line. The protests should have been restricted to the school premises, especially the administrative blocks... They should boycott all lectures and barricade lecture halls...

This very act is calling for police action, and Naija police doesn't follow best practices when it comes to riot act... They will start shooting to kill.

The students of the University of Benin, Benin City have taken to the Benin-Lagos express way to protest against poor management of the school and welfare of students.

The Protesters have shut down the ever busy Benin-Lagos express way causing a heavy traffic gridlock.

The agitated students are protesting over lack of electricity and water in the school, poor students welfare, bad roads amongst others.

The last of the situation is yet to be seen as the protest is still ongoing.

I think the problem is everything starts and ends here on social media.

If anybody has hard evidence against the man with facts and figures and they submit or table same to EFCC, they will gladly swing into action. Until then, the thieves will continue to loot (I am sorry to say)

Poor electiricity is due to the fact that we aren't paying enough in revenue to sustain 24/7 light supply

So the DISCOS and GENCOS don't have enough cash to supply power. (And they now supply areas where people pay regularly better than other areas. Someone high up in the DISCO hierachy told a relative of mine that DISCOS allegedly now supply 'priority areas')

On the water and other supply issues, the truth is, we are not paying enough in bills to have decent water supply.

And then we turn around and expect government to do all these things from a budget (before looting) of 22billion pounds (just to show how scanty that budget is, the UK police spends 12billion pounds annually)..when in relaity, we need a budget of 100billion pounds.

And we keep on eelcting governments whose agenda is simply to share money. Not to make polices that would increase the amount of money we have, or to agressively fight corruption.

It is a good thing that these students are protesting. But at the same time, many of them won;t accept a fee increase, won't accept something like council taxes of N40000 and above, won't accept increase in power charges, as well as deregulation of the oil downstream sector...which would lead to investment in power supply indirectly and more revenue for the government.

They want things to be like it was when our gradparents went to school...back when the number of students in university was far far less than it is now. In 1975, students had better welfare than they do now...and their number was less than 40000 nationwide. Now we have about 3-5 million students, and the budget is decreasing.
Oga, that's a lie.

For those being charged based on estimated billing, tthey pay through their noses. Imagine paying 10,000 monthly for a mini-flat and not seeing up to 6 hrs electricity per day.

Recently, massive corruption was uncovered in the power sector where over 30 individuals which include senior civil servants, contractors and past governors were said to have looted amounts running into billions of dollars. Contractors get paid and don't complete their work or they do nothing at all. I guess, that is also the fault of hardworking Nigerians right?

The outgoing vice chancellor is on an embezzlement mission. He wants to pocket light and fuel money before he finally leaves. His tenure has been the worst so far, he increased school fees from 15k to 41k for arts, then 53k for science students..

Acceptance fee 60k, 100lvl sch fees 70k for arts, 76k for science. Upon all these, the school is still not being ran effectively. No water in school hostels, no light both in school hostel and school itself.. These days it's better to stay at home, light candle and read than to come inside school for night class.

The vice chancellor's oratory is a shame to the entire school, even to read it off a book is still difficult for him. He lacks the ability to construct good sentences, I wonder how he taught his students. Heard he's the only VC that came into power without being a professor, he became a professor in office. He just has the connect, and it is what kills my beloved country.
Get ur facts right....he was already a professor In 2008 when I jst got admission then...as for he's administrative capabilities I doubt he has any

If all these are true, Nigeria is a messed up country. There may be no redemption for this country again. If the education sector is this deep in corruption, forget it, you can't win the societal corruption. This is where thoughts and philosophies of most Nigerians graduates are made. Damn!

Well, what did you guys expect. We are generating 4000MW of power a day. Lagos alone needs 10000MW of power a day for every house there to have light 24//7

You cannot expect DISCOS to give what they don't have.

All those fees are less than $200 dollars.

Meanwhile, in saner climes, fees are above $6000 and more. That's a big part of why they have light and water 24//7.

Meanwhile, our universites were told in 2013 that the N3trillion promised them in 2009 was no longer feasible.

What do you exepct your VC to do?? Keep pretending that the university is not broke??

The way we run the university system in Nigeria won't allow for development. I understand they are somewhat autonomous and they know how to perfect their dirty paths provided government is sending in an audit team or something. They cannot be caught off-guard. Most of our universities are just useless and unproductive glorified secondary schools. Yes, I graduated from one. But truth must be told.

Honestly, I wonder how those who are proud of being Nigerians manage to survive their mental state.

I personally have always been angry being born a Nigerian.
UNN used to have a hostel where you defecate on already piled up sh***ts as at 1999 when I schooled there.
Just recently I asked my juvenile cousin who stay in one of the hostels and he said it is even worse.
Nigerian people are responsible. The same student you are advocating for are the very ones who destroy all the school amenities and facilities with their irresponsible and nonchalant attitude.

Go and see how these animals use their school toilet facilities......you will cry!

Or do you think they wont like it if laws were made to guide the maintance ....

It seems you aren't aware of the debts they've incurred on themselves for the over priced universities. They've all shamelessly started begging for students loan forgiveness in the U.S .
