Way of life in Lagos. Even where there are pedestrian bridges, my people still prefer crossing the highway.Besides, the bridges are bad, take the bridge at Ojota as an example.
If the old Ojota Bridge is bad, let them take the Second and New one. It is wider and better.

If you run someone over where there is a pedestrian bridge, you won't be charged. You won't even be blamed. The highest that will happen is for you to go to the victim's house and apologise as they have no case in court sef. Expressway in Yoruba means "Opopona Marose" no-one should even be walking about or crossing it in the first place.

There is no point building modern structures in Nigeria, they masses aren't going to use the Anyway, Let them carry on with their mediocre system.

Because of traffic lights that work! Every few minutes, the road will become EMPTY. Traffic light will hold the cars and I'll walk like say na my papa get road.

One person wrote zebra crossing - you be zebra? Is there any place in the country that respects zebra crossing? Instead of shouting at people crossing, do mental tests for drivers that SPEED UP when people want to cross. For yanki, people go just chuuk head for road and vehicles will stop.

What do you mean by modern structure? Abi you just want show say you sabi English?

I once read about how one university of Michigan built foot paths around the campus. They didn't design the walkways behind closed doors. And start punishing students who walk on the grass like our dumb universities. NO!

They simply didn't build any! They let students walk on the grass for a while. Natural footpaths appeared on the grass - showing which routes students naturally took. They then paved, or cemented these paths.

The location of most pedestrian bridges in Lagos make no sense. They are located far away from bus stops. And you expect sane people to walk 5 minutes to the foot of the bridge and walk back 5 minutes back when they can cross in less than a minute?

Na Gbagada road be that. The government is at fault too, how can you increase the height of divisions between the road without providing pedestrian bridges. The only pedestrian bridge is at Charly boy, the next one is at new castle.

having spent some time in Lagos years back I concluded that
Lagos is a crazy place
I honestly cannot cope with the way of life there
shocked

I swear my brother, I arrived Lagos yesterday after spending 6 hours in traffic. You need to see the way these people were driving like animals.

I came to the conclusion that you can't live in lagos and still be normal. It's not possible

I have been having headache, body pains and nightmare since i arrived Lagos

At some point, a driver and one of his passenger got down and started exchanging blows in the middle of the road and in a heavy traffic

Lagos is so rowdy, dirty and scattered with bad roads everywhere. It was as if there was a war

I just can't wait to leave here on Tuesday. Lagos is part of the reason why Nigeria is termed a shithole

Correctgist:
A Concerned Nigerian man has called out Lagosians that refuse to use the pedestrian bridge while crossing highways.

This is coming after seeing the way people were crossing a very busy highway this early morning by waiting on the road verge and running like squirrels in order to beat incoming vehicles.

According to him, If motor jam their two left legs now what will they say?

Okay, if you say so. grin grin

Exactly My point, Nigerians can not wait for 5 minutes, 5 minutes that may save their lives. And you call that sane? grin grin peharps the crossing should be built right at their doorsteps, And they probarbly still will not use it. If the crossings are built near the bus stops, what about people who will not be crossing from the bus stops?

We over here have to stand on a crossing waiting for traffic lights for few minutes to show green, that doesn't mean we cannot just dash Across quickly but because it's all about SAFETY Not how long or how far the crossings are. grin You just proved my point. Thank you!

Almost 2020... and soooo many people see pedestrian bridges as the only safe way for people to cross busy roadways. Is this how people cross busy roadways in developed countries?...do we ever learn anything from visiting?...or from watching TV/SM? Do they ever do a study before erecting these obstacles? Do they ever consider the aged?...the handicapped?... the sick?... the weak? ... the pregnant?... the location?.. ithe maintenance?.... security?...is it convenient? If only they considered one... they would find a better way. We need city planners.... capable ones ..regardless of certifications.
People crossing think it's better for them to cross the roadway rather than use the bridge. If you have a fractured ankle... what would you do?

1. I would have agreed with your submission if only pregnant women, the old, those with fractured bones are the ones crossing the roads on foot. But what about the healthy? What about the young? What's their excuse for not using the bridge?

2. Someone mentioned the use of lights. Question, would these lights be obeyed? I've been to other West African countries like Togo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana. One thing is different, especially in Togo. I was at Lomé for about 3 months. There, you'd see UNEDUCATED bike riders (okada riders) obeying the traffic lights. Once it's red, they stop. But in Nigeria? What percentage of our motorists obey traffic? And you think pedestrians would obey the lights?

3. I assure you that even though you bring topnotch ideas down here, majority of Nigerians would abuse/disregard it.

Our problem is our orientation. The sooner we tell ourselves this truth, the better. The story would remain same even if you bring 2050 technology in today's Nigeria.

Doubt? Look around you.

The traffic lights you mentioned, are they obeyed by our motorists? In fact, it appears that in our driving schools, people are only taught how to disobey every rule of the road!

By the way, zebra crossing is still being used in the western world.

There's a pathway to development. It doesn't start with infrastructure. No. It starts from the mind. If you skip this step, all efforts would be like pouring water in a basket.

Even if government begins to construct underground roads (there are some around though), I assure you that people would find a way to abuse it.

We must all start by teaching our children morals and values. We must teach them good habits. We must teach them how to respect authority and obey laws. We must teach them possible implications of disobedience. They must grow with this orientation. As adults, we must begin to disabuse our minds. We must unlearn our bad habits. We must be civil. Is this too difficult to do?

Our government is obviously not doing enough. But can we ask ourselves how well we've used the LITTLE they have done?

I won't pretend to know the answer. But here's my experience from living in koforidua Ghana for 5 years. Electricity, stable. Roads, tarred and actively maintained. I.e. They fix potholes as they appear rather than waiting for the whole thing to spoil so it can be used for election campaign.

There were waste baskets at both ends of major streets. So i got used to holding trash till the next waste basket. Habit stuck with me for two years when I returned with people looking at me funny holding on to trash.

No doubt, there are demons, goats & pigs in human clothing living amongst us. However, they aren't unique to Nigeria.

Let the government do their work first then we'll do ours.

The second one that always seem as if it's shaking when you walk on it, besides it's a bit far depending on where you are going.

You know there's no time in Lagos.

Pedestrian bridge isn't safe at night especially when the street lights isn't functioning...I wont blame anyone crossing the road when it's late because no body wants to be robbed of their valuables in a not -so -secured city like Lagos....

1. They can get across quicker and to their destination faster.

2..Motorists in manyyyy countries... regardless of education ... follow traffic rules and regulations... stop at red lights etc. Ask yourself.... do you really believe it is because of self discipline?... or enforcement of regulations?

3. You just don't introduce something and leave it up to the masses to do the right thing. This is basically the mentality of the powers that be and check yourself.... is it not the same you are proposing?.... that citizens need to be responsible and do the right thing?

The whole point is that planners need to do a study and look at things from all angles.... anticipate challenges before deciding if the project would be worthwhile. This one isn't.
