Its called engine breaking. It's your best bet when you gave a failed break. The car can only run on low speeds in low Gears.

Car is a mechanical and electrical system which can fail at anytime, so whenever you loose your brakes during driving just see it as a mechanical malfunction likely to occur , dont think its spiritual or strange just put your mind together.

Five steps to follow when you loose your brakes

1. Don't panic , be strong and concentrate on your driving.

for manual transmission, switch to gear one straight and lightly the depress the accelerator and the car would decelerate instantly.

For automatic move your gear lever down to 1 or L or lowest gear depending on vehicle make and deceleration would occur.

Not the OP. If you put ur car in Neutral u lose engine braking (when u change to a low gear nd remove ur leg from d accelerator) If u turn off the engine,you lose power steering..

We can never experience brake failure in our driving but if at all; for manual simply be calm and continue changing the gear to a lower gear such as from 5 to 4 to 2 or 3 to 1; if automatic put your gear lever to the lowest. The hand brake can be applied in all. With this surely your car will come to rest.
N/B. No to neutral or engine turn off it accelerate the car more. This is from experience.

Best go with that of nurey. The Op knows nothing about driving. Once you turn off the ignition the power steering is gone and the steering stiffens up. Then in most cases putting the car at Neutral, the car tends to gain more acceleration.

I was about saying this.... You don't pull your hand break when the break fails. It's so so wrong! The best thing you could do is keep pumping the failed break, then adjust the gear to neutral.

Yes, you should never panic in any emergency situation. Panic will definitely make you more confused causing you to make a terrible mistake.

Never pull your hand brake if you are on high speed. It will lock up your back wheel which will destabilize the car causing the car to skid which will make you to loose control of it. This can lead to somersault. It's a very dangerous maneuver at high speed. Use the hand brake only if you lost your brakes at low speed of 40km/h and below. Above that speed, you have to downshift your gears first to the lowest gear for the engine to slow the car down before using the hand brake.

NEVER switch off the engine for any reason till the car comes to a stop. Switching of the engine will make you loose steering wheel control as the steering will become very hard and difficult to turn.

Whether you are to put your gear on neutral depends on a specific situation. Putting your gear on neutral if you are going downhill isn't advisable as that will disengage the gear from the engine and make the hill to roll the car the more. If you are going uphill, you can put your gear on neutral. Generally, it is safer to use engine braking. That is, downshift your gear to the lowest gear (Drive 1 for automatic transmission and gear 1 for manual), the engine will slow the car down to the lowest gear to a safe speed at which the hand brake can be applied.

there's no way in hell a car of 80km/h would be taken straight to gear 1,again if u immediately pull the hand brake,ur car would make a 180 degrees turning thereby causing accident even before the brake failure does.

best way is to look for a bush to swerve to and using the passenger's side to hit a tree to halt the car,the passenger side would crash and ur car would stop without u having any injury. all u need do is just to go and fix ur car.

As I saw turn off engine....I just assumed Jesus Take the wheel....You should never turn off engine as you wont be able to turn your steering for abs cars even if the brake where to pick up again the abs wont work.

bros you made a lot of sense here.....off engine and power steering will not work again very stiff...….. I will practice that L LOWER GEAR to see if it really works...….by assumption practice

But turning off the engine while still in motion? This is not actually ideal in all cars as most modern cars steering system will shutdown with the engine making control difficult. This can also be another hazardous situation itself.

...stop accelerating..
... put gear on neutral
....with engine still on, gradually steer off the road and apply handbrake.
