I am talking from experience, I once switch my manual gear Nissan almera at 100km to gear 1 and pressed the accelerator the deceleration was astronomical. I have done same thing on a sienna 2000 auto though at 70km on 3rd mainland bridge and deceleration set in but not as astronomical as the manual transmission

Turning off the engine will cause the driver to lose power steering and engine braking and even risk locking the steering.

Pulling the hand brake will lock up the rear wheels and could cause skidding of the car uncontrollably.

You cannot even down shift to gear 1 on a speed that is high. Even if the car allows you to, it will be dangerous and cam result to drive wheel lock up then skidding.

The best is to progressively down shift. It is a complete complicated process but a manual, its best to downshift 2 gears at a time. On auto transmission, engine braking is by default. But you will gain more engine braking by manually shifting to 3-2-1. At the same time pulling the hand brake with the button depressed so that it doesn't cause a wheel lock.

Any thing that causes a wheel lock is bad news.

turning off your engine, while leaving ignition on is called stalling (i bet u dont know thats what its called) and it takes power away from transmission fluids. that means, you will not be able to turn your steering easily because it will become very stiff.

When pulling your hand break pls remember, don't pull it too fast ,pull it gradually like you're applying your normal break else you might lose control of your car.

Don't turn your engine off, instead down shift to a lower gear.

For me when you driving at whatever speed that suits your experience and you observe that your brake system has gone awol, first thing you need to do is get your head in the game. Be very decisive on what to do to beat or avoid collision with the traffic.
For auto:
If your speed is above 40kmph leave the gear on drive release your thruttle completely and continuously pump your breaks. This will slowly decrease your speed.
Apply your hand break gently to help decrease your speed and be on the lookout for elevated slope which is always not too far out. Engage your neutral once you notice the car is ascending pull your hand brake gradually till it all up. Pray no mumu taxi driver de your front.

For manual,
Same thing get your head cleared and stay focused. Downshift your gear gradually (release your clutch gently) till you get to hear one. Your car go Hala o but forget it, it will definitely be fine. Once you get to gear one, your speed will be very controllable, look for high ground to peach your car or if you get an elevated slope, once you close to 15-10kmph, turn off your engine completely but don't remove the key, put your gear back to one and release the clutch fully. Your car will jack to a full stop.

I think the main precaution should be drive cautiously and be on a reliable speed limit, only then can you maneuver in case of brake failure cuz nobi only you dey road

I think your revs will likely jump, then your car drops them down immediately so as not to damage the transmission.

Revs jump keh is mildly saying it, the Engine was on redline I was even afraid the Engine go kaput and the nasty sound I heard from that Almera Engine, fear catch me but all was well

When I got to abroad newly I do wonder why they do not have this thing called break failure. Till date after over a decade I have not heard or seen one. Nigerians drive with rotten,spoilt, and what description of break and keep killing themselves and others just to tag it spiritual or break fail. Break the refused to take care of.

When you switch off your engine, you lose engine braking which is a faster way to slow down than coasting in neutral!

What would i do?

In a manual, i would downshift gradually until i get to the lowest gear and hopefully coast to a stop safely using my hand brakes gradually or what is left of my foot brakes

In an automatic with paddle shifters, i would downshift using the paddle shifters just as in a manual and then use the handbrakes / foot brakes if i still have some hydraulic pressure

Its called engine breaking. It's your best bet when you gave a failed break. The car can only run on low speeds in low Gears.

For manual transmission, engage to gear-2 first before downshifting to 1. For Auto transmission, take off ur foot from the gas pedal, shift to D3, then D2 and finally D1...You may likely suffer your transmission but avoiding major injuries or even death is more important

Yes it can. The engine will scream but will definitely slow down. Its ur best bet. The worst that would happen is for ur engine to get faulty but u have higher chance of getting out alive.

No mind d op especially when it’s a power steering...At high speeds, Some Auto transmission cars would not allow a downshift to D1 or L...downshift to D3 first and D2 or D1 immediately...For manual tranny in high speed, downshift to gear-2 pls

On item 2: Some modern cars do come with electric handbrake; if you operate the handbrake, the car will stop suddenly and what do you think will happen next if there are cars behind you?
On item 3: If you disengage the gear it means the car will coast freely without any resistance from the gearbox. It is better you don't shift it to neutral.
On item 4: If you switch off the engine, especially if it's power steering, you will totally lose the steering control and your guess is as good as mine.

Do u drive automatic? If u do, u will notice ur gear lever has 1,2 and L (for some cars it's called d1 and d2) nary u drive with D or D3 which is the normal drive mode. But D1 and D2 or L are called low gears and u don't need to press the brake get into those low gears from normal drive. Try it yourself, while driving move ur gear from D to D2 or D1 or L without pressing the brake see what happens. U will see ur car will slow down. It is called engine braking.

Some cars with manual gearbox come with a safety device in the gearbox, which will disallow such drop from the 5th gear to the 1st. The device can only allow a drop to the next lower gear, from gear 5 to gear 4. And for cars that don't have such a device, the sudden shift from gear 5 to gear 1 will lockup the wheels and the car will skid; especially if the road is wet, you know the rest. That action will also wreck the gearbox.

Just yesterday, an oncoming bus failed brake, and was just coming right towards me. I didnt noticed earlier because i had an ear piece tucked in my ear, the time i got to know the force of inertia held me so tight i couldn't move and just like a sitting duck. But fortunately for me the driver averted me and the bus flew and enter someone's compound.

But turning off the engine while still in motion? This is not actually ideal in all cars as most modern cars steering system will shutdown with the engine making control difficult. This can also be another hazardous situation itself.

... put gear on neutral
....with engine still on, gradually steer off the road and apply handbrake.

Never put the gear to neutral at high speed. Why do u people keep thinking this is a good idea. Pls Google engine braking, that is the best way to slow down the car in such situations. once car is slow enough (around 40km/hr) then u can use ur handbrake and once car is very slow then u can put to neutral.

For auto-transmission cars at hi-speed, It’s best you downshift to D3-D2-D1/L in quick succession. For manual tranny , nak am to gear 2. Car go halla but it will get the job done.

On a serious note ur hand/parking brake holds only ur back tyres. I think u should apply it slowly depending on ur speed.
