This is a good formation sincerely. If only Xhaka would just be a defensive midfielder who will tackle to win the ball and not just be committing unnecessary fouls in delicate areas.
He can be trained. I have seen Xhaka perform for country. He can be made to look good. Same goes to Guen. Others like Torriera, Willock, even AMN can then begin to fight to displace any of them. But the key thing is that there is an established pattern the club has decided to follow and every player should seek to adapt to it.

Xhaka cannot play the defensive midfield role (the viera kind) in the EPL.
Maybe he plays well for his country, but he doesn't have that instinct to play it well for arsenal in the EPL.

Just look at Ndidi, Kante, McTonmay, Fabinho, Fernadinho(when he plays in the middle) and see how they play that role. (I don't know how to explain it). Now tell me in all honesty if u think Xhaka can learn how to move like those guys do, if he can shield the back 4 like they do and can he do all these without committing unnecessary fouls?

Please Freddie, let's get back to basics. Let's go back to 4-4-2. I believe you have gathered the tricks and experience required to play the formation.

............ Auba ....... Laca .............
Pepe ... Xhaka ... Guen ... Saka
Tierney . Luiz .... Cham . Bellerin
..................... Leno .....................
Bros e no go work.

Saka... Not ready
Guen...Not big enough
Xhaka..Too immobile with no good footwork
Pepe..Zero defense contribution

Auba/Laca.. Dulls attack since both are average with the ball at feet.

Good to see Baba blue analysing the importance of a midfield destroyer with good mobility smiley. cool

I chose Xhaka just because he is available not the desirable. In a middle two, Xhaka should be the anchor not the destroyer. His primary duty would be to spread the ball and release runners. This I believe he can handle, he does same for country. What is important is the formation. Personnel can be acquired on needs basis.

You are only focusing on the attack part of the game. We definitely won't attack for 90 minutes. I'm in no doubt of the attack side of his game( even though of recent he only stays at a point and tries to spray pass to the end of Siberia, but I know this can be worked on to make him better attack wise).

Xhaka defending in the middle is not something I look forward to as a fan. He just can't help himself. His fouls mostly are counter productive. He's just not a natural tackler. Even though players like Fabinho and Fernandinho commit fouls to shield the back 4, u will always relate with their fouls as being vital and goal-scoring-opportunity saving tackles.

If we want to adopt 4-4-2, then we must get a better player defensively and attacking wise. If not we will still have the same old story

............ Auba ....... Laca .............
Pepe ... Xhaka ... Guen ... Saka
Tierney . Luiz .... Cham . Bellerin
..................... Leno .....................
In as much as 4-4-2 is sweet on paper, in reality, it really demands all round hard workers across the pitch and transition from defence to attack suppose to be fast. From the squad above, most of them just didn't fit in the formation. Firstly, the 2 forwards ought to be different but complementary. While auba and laca are different, they're not in any way complementary to each other. No one can beat defence with dribbling or pace, nor good with ball at the feet. So it'll be difficult to implement.
Going to the midfield, like I opined, they need to be hard workers. Pepe hardly help in defence (tho he can be taught), and saka is just too young and raw to be thinking of first team. Also that midfield base is dead on arrival with Xhaka there. No destructive 4, which a 442 really needs. Guen also will need to be fast in his play, like I said, we need quick transition. Back 4 sorts itself out.
But if he wanna insist on using it(like you suggested), I'll go for
Leno
Bellerin Luiz holding Tierney

Pepe Toreira ceballos (guen) martinelli

Auba laca

I believe with proper discipline, Toreira and ceballos can hold their own and both have long and short pass accuracy to launch and attack. Pepe can be worked on and given instructions to help defence, and martinelli I feel is an upgrade to saka sha.
As for the front two, heaven help us. Lol.

In all honesty tho, I think we don't really have the personnel for such formation

Or we can use

Leno
Bellerin. Luiz holding Tierney

Ceballos. Toreira guen. Martinelli

Pepe Auba

Yeah, both are mates, but I think martinelli is more influential than saka. He's more fearless, have more eye for goal, more work rate than saka. That's how I see martinelli sha o. Lol.

That's not the crux of the matter here. He stated it clearly he's taking saka out of that formation cos he's young and shouldn't be thinking first team football and that's why I needed him to explain why that same criteria does not apply to his age mate whom he deems fit to be in the team

Well if u had said this, I wouldn't argue with u. Not just the age factor. Cos I was going to start listing so many 18 year Olds that got their big break and never looked back.

Young and Raw bro...not just young. I'm not taking him out cos he's solely young. That's why I said martinelli is an upgrade on him, even tho both are age mates. In a proper setup sef, martinelli sef no suppose dey, but it's just with respect to the 442 formation, that's why I'm even thinking of those two

In the first formation, Pepe as an inside right will not fit in to handle his defensive duties as he is left footed.

I will take him paired with Auba as a support striker since he has the pace and skill to split a defence. That's in your second formation. Your point about Auba and Laca as not complementary is absolutely spot on. Ceballos cannot play the winger role.

Where does Ozil fit in?

................. Auba ..... Ozil ................

Mehn... I don't see Ozil where can fit in with 442 o, dats why I didn't think of including him anywhere. I feel it's a way of alienating him. Even in the forward role sef, I don't think he might blend.
Thank you for even remembering Nelson, I've totally forgotten him sef. It was because I forgot about Nelson, I drafted ceballos into the side midfield role. Also, I feel the 2nd formation will be better than the first cos of the skills of Pepe, in order to open space up for auba.
Also why I put Pepe in the right side was because he can easily cut in to his left and take a shot(seen it many times in his clip wen playing for Lille).
