Three die, shops razed as Hausa, Yoruba clash in Osun



Three lives were lost in the clash involving some Hausa youths and indigenes of Iyere village in Atakumosa West Local Government Area of Osun State on Monday.

Although the issue that led to the crisis was not known as of the time of filing this report, our correspondent, however, learnt that during the clash, market stalls mostly belonging to Hausa and Fulani traders were razed down.

The Osun State Police Command said only one life was lost in the crisis.

A resident of Igila, an adjourning community to Iyere, Olaide Agboola, in a chat with our correspondent, said residents of Igila got wind of the clash in Iyere around midnight when some people that escaped from the scene of the violence entered the village.

Agboola said from the account they gave, a yet-to-be-identified Fulani man and a Hausa man were fighting and an indigene of Iyere town, who owns a store nearby intervened to prevent the matter from escalating.

“Unfortunately, the peacemaker got killed and he was a Yoruba man. Some residents, in reprisal, killed two Hausa youths. That was the cause of the crisis. And it lasted all night.

“Roadside stalls and markets were completely razed. Goods worth several millions of naira were lost to the crisis. Policemen and soldiers have arrived the town and everywhere is quiet now,” Agboola said.

Agila of Igila, Oba Samuel Falaye, told our correspondent that from the reports available to him, lives were lost, while market stalls were also destroyed in the clash.

When contacted, the acting Police Public Relations Officer for Osun State Police Command, Mustafa Katanyeyanjue, explained that around 9:35 p.m. on Monday, at Osu one Baguga, a non-Yoruba settler allegedly stabbed 27-year-old Tope Kayode to death over a yet-to-be-established reason.

These scenes [Hausa vs Yoruba] have become a yearly ritual. Contrary to what people might be willing to admit, I think the Igbos have the least tendency, amongst the three-majors, to engage in inter-ethnic brawls.

If I might add: if the Igbos leave this union, I do not think there would be much left of Nigeria; other groups would opt to chart their course separately. A balance would be tipped. People know this but they aren't ready to acknowledge it.

Anyway, we all augment each other in unique ways. We are better together, for our sake and for the sake of the black race—within and without Africa.

The predilection of an Hausaman, or Fulaniman, to draw a dagger and strike within a very short notice is legendary. Sahelian groups have been observed to have a very short fuse.

We need to outgrow these very unnecessary kerfuffles.

Situations like this are the reason I don't bulge when blacks complain about racism. Here we are the same colour but we hate and kill each other because we speak different languages; the black man is his own problem

Heavy fighting goes on daily between Igbos and Yorubas but no bloodshed, it happens online and in the media. Once the log out Tunde will call Nkechi to come around and give him the best Kpekus of his life, while Emeka will call Bimbo to meet him at ShopRite and from there to his house for a wonderful time.

Emeka without telling Bimbo opens his phone and sees a topic about Igbos on Nairaland and calls Tunde Afonja and Skull Miner logs out and ask for second round, Tunde responds and calls him IPOBian Inyamiri, logs out and puts his mouth on Nkechis succulent breasts.

But any quarrel between Yoruba or Igbo and Hausa, you hear that many are dead. Why?
