Id rather die at home,since my father was killed at a teaching hospital by bastard doctors,my grandma too same thing. I said to my self,any doc wey wan play smart with me,i go stab am to death. Its 25yrs nw i never waka go hospital. God forbid

Wouldn't blame the doctors and nurses, they are under equipped and understaffed and have to work long hours with little or no pay so have to take it out on innocent patients which is very very wrong

The issue with those general hospitals is that patients loads are too much compared to numbers of doctors available. Also most of them are not motivated because of poor renumerations .
Drs are humans, they are not machines/computers. Working environment is very poor, no facilities to work with, over work is the order of the day, which oyibo man will not allow.
Patients could be selfish most times.. Seen a dying doctor , they will say doctor attend to me before you take your last breath...

See you making excuses for a stupid incompetent doctor. This is the problem of Nigeria. Police will collect extort you, doctor will ignore you all because "no good work environment etc". Now we find reasons to "understand" their failures? I personally think that's silly. If you are paid to work and you accept the pay, you must do the job! If you are not OK with it, you resign!

Until I moved to the UK I never knew what hospitals should look like and what advanced healthcare experience could be like. I used to have a health condition that warranted me to often visit hospitals while in Naija, it was a sad experience day in day out. I was treated with disdain and contempt on a regular. The staff are rude, the hospitals are dirty and unkempt and substandard equipments.

In contrast if you see the standard and quality of care hospitals provide in Britain or Europe you may even want to fall sick. Couldn’t believe it the first time I was admitted in the hospital here, I was treated like an egg. It’s just amazing. I’ve always said that every Nigerian should in their lifetime visit any western country even if not to stay but just to see how a decent society should look like.

You were treated that way because you also behaved yourself. Naija patients are unruly in many cases, same thing with Doctors. This chaotic mix gives what we now see.

When you go the the AnE in UK sometimes you end up waiting 3 hours or even more. You don't see anybody screaming and making a mess of the place. Its not the same thing in Naija. Everywhere would have been noisy, chaotic and rowdy. People are also given 2-3months non-emergency appointments, but book a patient for even one month here and see him screaming and trying to pull down the place.

I knew with the kind of health complaints i had, i would need a test conducted on me, "well, i need a doctor's recommendation on that first", i said to myself. So i decided to see the doctor first.
Entering the Hospital, i have to get my file first,
"Hello, good morning, this is my card i need to see the doctor"
"is this your first time here?" a female voice from the record room
"No, although it has been a while i came here", i replied
"okay, you'll have to pay to the account dept first"
"alright, kindly show me the account dept" i requested.
She pointed in the direction and i went there, paid 200 naira and collected a receipt, then back to the record room.
"have your seat I'll attend to you" she said.
Okay, after about 15 minutes she requested both the card and the receipt then returned both after tearing a part of the receipt and using my card to find my file. I was then told to sit on a queue and wait for my name to be called by the doctor, it was almost 10:00am.

I have got about 6 patients before me, it wasn't a big deal until i had to wait and move closer to the consultation room on the seat until i heard the doctor call my name 2:10pm.
Is this how people get attended to here? I thought my suffering was over, not knowing I've just seen season one.
I explained the symptoms of my illness to the doctor and he recommended i have a blood test first.

Getting to the laboratory department, they said they can no longer obtain a sample for the day and I will have to come back the following day. I asked if it was possible that the sample is drawn and i can just come for the result the following morning. I was told that is not possible. I will have to come back to give the sample 8:00am the following day.
I was left with no choice, so i had to go back 8:00am on Tuesday
"Hi. I was told to come back this morning for a medical test"
I handed her the leaflet from the doctor.
"okay, it's 1500 naira, and you'll have to purchase a glove and a needle from the pharmacy"
I quickly did that,
"here is the glove and the needle", i said.
"okay, have your seat while we obtain your blood sample" - she replied.
The blood sample was obtained and i was told to come back 12 noon for the result.
Chai! will i have to waste half of a whole day here again?
The lab attendant saw the look on my face and told me -
"just hang-around and come back around that time".
Had to wait around and went back for my result 12 noon.
"Hi, am back for my result" - i said
"have your seat, it will soon be ready" - she replied
So, this result isn't even ready at 12 noon.
The test result was finally issued after 45 more minutes.
Dashed again to the Records room, explained and got my card to the doctor's office within 30more minutes. And that was almost 1:30pm.
Those on the queue for the day were already tired and lamenting the queue wasnt moving at all.

There were two doctors inside, one that attended to me the previous day and another doctor.
After some minutes the doctor that attended to me the previous day left and there was just one doctor in the consultation room.
"Why are you standing there?" - He asked
"I need to see a doctor sir" - i replied
"i have been here yesterday and was told by the doctor to go for a medical test, so am back with the result" - i further explained
"when was the test conducted?" - he asked
"the sample was taken 8:00am today and I was told to come for the result 12:00 noon, i just collected the test result, that's why i am here to see the doctor now sir" - i explained again
"they couldn't have said that, if you have been here earlier you would have been attended to" - he said

If this is what has become of our medical care system, am afraid we are sitting on a time bomb because there are infections, diseases and sicknesses that are killing patients under the skin quietly and require urgent attention else the patient dies a quick painful death. Are these the hands we have on deck? Our Governors need to act fast! We never can tell who would be next in this kind of experience, our families, friends, colleagues, considering not everyone can be so buoyant to afford a private clinic and not everyone is so strong to withstand this in sickness.

There are a little strange things to me in the stoRye. Some samples can't be conducted in the afternoon. Even here in Europe and also there are times, you have to wait for doctor.that is the difference between public and private.the only strange thing is the attitude of the doctors. Sometimes you have to wait for your turn even in Europe and they may tell you to book some appointment,which may be a latter day. Only emergency cases are treated urgent.we can't judge the doctor without hearing his side but Nigerians need to be patient .if you mis behave in any hospital, they have a right also to sanction you.so it's normal for you to be told to come back next day for test.I have experienced it in Europe too,in general doctors are humans too and can make mistakes. Best option is for you to go to private , private are always the best. Note that in Europe, medecals are not free, you pay thru insurance. So we can't be comparing Europe and nigeria .nothing is free in Europe.even if you are dying and no insurance, some hospital will not attend to u. Some agencies are responsible for such cases

All our doctors have gone to Canada cos they wanted more renumeration, the few remaining are so overwhelmed with the patients and sometimes the go crazy.
And you know you can't stop people from leaving for a better place, but the question is if everyone leaves who will stay?

Government failing in there responsibility and citizen failing in their duties, but they expect the citizen abide by their duty of paying tax.

UCH,LUTH etc and the father of them all ‘LASUTH ICU”... are all Theaters of Death. The last time I visited someone at the ICU in LASUTH I met about 10 patients there. After 5-6 days of checking on the fellow, only 1 person was left at the emergency unit(where you pay N30k daily) ;everyone had died even the person that I went to visit. May the Lord rest her soul. What a Nation Nigeria.

Had a similar experience on Tuesday, in a general hospital as well. I was down and decided to go for checkup. I got there by 7, thinking i’d see the doctor on time but “doctor(s)” didn’t show up till around 10am when a young guy came to attend to me. (A copper)

All the other doctors were nowhere to be found.

Forget, medical doctors are part of the problem of this country.

In UK, to see a doctor you have to wait for 4-6hours in the general hospitals, maybe 3-4hours in less populated areas (Same with A-E, if the case is not an 100% emergency case). But when it is your turn

Nigeria hospitals are under equipped
Under staffed
Full of Silly, unethical doctors
Ukraine unqualified doctors
Private University "Kindergarten doctors"
Lastly, We have no respect for human lives.

My brother I tire o... Nigerians expect world class facilities in a sick country. Like you said, it takes a while in the UK to get an appointment to see the doctor and if you Google UK A&E waiting times, it's crazy and they are usually in crises around Christmas.
This guy writing this is not sick obviously, sick people don't come updating on nairaland. You dashed into a government hospital, paid 200naira and expected to be attended immediately by 2 overwhelmed doctors seeing a multitude of patients. Are you aware there's a queue or list starting from the morning? Are you aware that some patients come by 6am to write names? Are you aware that the doctor probably started work earlier than that?
You're so focussed on your self meanwhile you exist in this pitiable entity called Nigeria and I can bet you are taking bribes and bring unfair to people at your own job or workplace. People only remember their rights and morals in a hospital but try and get a passport at immigration office or drive on the road and you will see hell. This post was all targeted at the health workers but I am sure the hospital environment was nothing to write home about but you choose to doctor hate the people working in that depressing place.
And all those asking you to post an innocent doctor's name online in the spirit of call out, just be aware that online posts can land one in jail now especially this type of attention seeking myopic piece.

I had similar experience at a general hospital here in Iwo, Osun state.
It happened that i was feeling sick. So, I had to visit the afforesaid hospital. On getting there i went straight to where i was to obtain my card, i was told to buy exercise book so that i could get registered and i went out to buy and gave it to them. Then after, i was directed to wait at the department where to consult with the doctor. I met around seven people before me so i had to wait. This was around 9'oclock and the doctor was yet to arrive. Time went by We were on seat waiting for the doctor to arrive not until 1'o clock there he came
attend to one another in shoddy manner. Manner in the sense that there was no attentive and proper check up in regards to one's explanation. And about the treatment Let's not talk about that side because we were all given same prescription (anti-malaria drugs).
Health sector is long deteriorating, it will only get worse if not tackled with holistic approach.

If this is what has become of our medical care system, am afraid we are sitting on a time bomb because there are infections, diseases and sicknesses that are killing patients under the skin quietly and require urgent attention else the patient dies a quick painful death. Are these the hands we have on deck? Our Governors need to act fast! We never can tell who would be next in this kind of experience, our families, friends, colleagues, considering not everyone can be so buoyant to afford a private clinic and not everyone is so strong to withstand this in sickness.

You went to hospital at 8am and got to be seen by a doctor at 2pm.
You were lucky.

A time will come,you will wait the whole day and no doctor will be available to see you.

Nothing is working in Nigeria.

Please the last doctor to relocate from Nigeria should remember to lock the consulting rooms

The last place me and NY family will seek medical treatment and help is any govt hospital.

You dashed into a government hospital, paid 200naira and expected to be attended immediately by 2 overwhelmed doctors seeing a multitude of patients. Are you aware there's a queue or list starting from the morning? Are you aware that some patients come by 6am to write names? Are you aware that the doctor probably started work earlier than that?
You're so focussed on your self meanwhile you exist in this pitiable entity called Nigeria and I can bet you are taking bribes and bring unfair to people at your own job or workplace. People only remember their rights and morals in a hospital but try and get a passport at immigration office or drive on the road and you will see hell. This post was all targeted at the health workers but I am sure the hospital environment was nothing to write home about but you choose to doctor hate the people working in that depressing place.
And all those asking you to post an innocent doctor's name online in the spirit of call out, just be aware that online posts can land one in jail now especially this type of attention seeking myopic piece.

Sadly the labs who stopped taking blood samples at 2pm will never be bashed. It's all a Doctors problem.

The only thing I find strange in your story is the 200 naira consultation fee you paid. It’s really cheap.
It is 800 naira in OAU teaching hospital Ilesa.
And you have to pay the fee every time you need to see the doctor.
If a doctor ask you to do test, and you’re coming back the next day with the results, you’ll pay 800 naira consultation fee again. And will most likely be attended to by another Doctor entirely.

I suggest you find a private hospital, and stop stressing yourself.

The general hospitals are swamped with patients. Health workers are underpaid and overworked. Equipment is in short supply.

Why does he expect to be given ‘express’ service when his case isn’t an emergency?

Why is he surprised that he was asked to return the next day for his test result when common sense would tell him that the lab - at 2:30 pm - would have lots of samples to analyze, and the man who’s supposed to draw the sample is most likely multitasking as an analyst due to inadequate manpower.


At the end, he proves to be a part of the problem. Instead of calling on the Government to significantly revamp our hospitals with more equipment and increased staffing, he’s turning this into a rant to bash doctors.


Truth be told, this is exactly what happens when citizens can’t hold their leaders accountable for good healthcare.


If you can’t push your Governor to revamp the hospitals in the state, just make sure you can afford private healthcare. If not, don’t complain.

My thoughts exactly.

My first encounter with government hospital ( A teaching hospital though LUTH) was when i had a cancer scare..They will stress you like jarkie. The nurses are so rude though they are some that were polite with patient. Anyway after the whole stress I was treated with a minor operation.
The doctors are quite good and knows what they are doing but they mostly lack equipment with poor remuneration.

I have spoken.

I once worked for 2 years in a Facility that was manned by only 2 Doctors year in and year out. These 2 Doctors also carried out all the Surgeries. When surgeries are on the senior nurses may need to attend to non complicated cases, and ask others to come back. Though patients knew this, they kept blaming the Doctors, instead of calling on the leaders that it's a state of emergency.

As for the Lab, only one Lab scientist, the others were technicians, yet they expected samples to be processed on time, and many times insulted the Lab workers for being inefficient. Even trying to settle or change their line of thought was a waste of time, as Nigerians quickly take on those who reason with them, but "respect" those who act pompous to them. After being bashed by patients when I tried to be nice, i learnt to ignore them, so as to avoid more trouble and insults. I also make sure i document the challenges with each patient and round just for reference sake.

I am out of there now, and looking back I can sincerely say those Doctors and health workers were some of the most hardworking people I ever met. Stretching their self day in day out, and working alternate weekends just to ensure that things are moving, yet people still did not see it that way. Only a Lecturer once asked me, how do you guys rest or spend time with your family, because you are almost always here.

We really pray and hope things get better

Patient would not understand, especially the Nigerian patient.
