Femi Adesina Reacts As Punch Calls Buhari 'Major General' by lalasticlala(mod): 10:41am On Dec 11, 2019
President Buhari's special adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina has reacted after The PUNCH newspaper vowed to address President Buhari as Major General.

The PUNCH wrote:

As a symbolic demonstration of our protest against autocracy and military-style repression, PUNCH (all our print newspapers, The PUNCH, Saturday PUNCH, Sunday PUNCH, PUNCH Sports Extra, and digital platforms, most especially Punchng.com) will henceforth prefix Buhari’s name with his rank as a military dictator in the 80s, Major General, and refer to his administration as a regime, until they purge themselves of their insufferable contempt for the rule of law.

Here is Femi Adesina's reaction to the Punch

ANOTHER TESTIMONY TO PRESS FREEDOM IN NIGERIA, BY PRESIDENCY

A newspaper says it will henceforth address President Muhammadu Buhari by his military rank of Major General. Nothing untoward in it. It is a rank the President attained by dint of hard work before he retired from the Nigerian Army. And today, constitutionally, he’s also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

All over the world, just as in our country, a large number of retired military officers are now democrats. It does not make those who didn’t pass through military service better democrats than them.

Rather than being pejorative, addressing President Buhari by his military rank is another testimony to free speech and freedom of the press, which this administration (or regime, if anyone prefers: it’s a matter of semantics) has pledged to uphold and preserve.

Re: Femi Adesina Reacts As Punch Calls Buhari 'Major General' by festacman(m):
In as much as vigilance and ventilation are needed to keep our democracy alive, the simple truth is that the real situation is very far from the picture Punch Newspaper is painting. There is freedom of speech in Nigeria and on daily basis tens of anti-government and extremely anti-Buhari articles get published in both print and online media. If there wasn't, staunch critics like Femi Fani Kayode with all his misleading, mischievous and insulting posts would have been in jail.

Unfortunately, DSS personnel got carried away in their bid to tame the defiant Yele Sowore that they tactlessly played into his original intention of making himself a hero of democracy by that act of gangsterism in court premises. Now, the enemies of government including displaced and embittered PDP moneybags have subtly moved into action to discredit Buhari's administration in both local and international media. To counter this dangerous development, I think government should reach out to critical civil society stakeholders to restate its commitments to democratic principles.

However, one thing is certain, because Buhari's presidency is very NECESSARY for the INEVITABLE disruptions of the existing political and economic orders that will make way for new orders, it will survive this onslaught like the ones that came in the past.

Clearly Femi Adesina is trying to manage the situation by painting a good picture out of it but irrespective of his attempt, the Punch group are making a solid statement.
Should other media houses follow their track we'll be heading to a "check and balance government".
Thumbs up to the Punch news outlet.

Going by past records of Military rule and democracy rule in Nigeria, everyone believes Nigeria achieved more during the military rule.

Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) has decided to switch from democratic government to a military regime. Disguising as Democratic president of Federal Republic Of Nigeria before the international community
It was a sad day

Nigerians are not grateful, when Jonathan was in power most people said he is too weak against corruption which paved way for Buhari Administration where the fight against corruption better than his predecessor. If u think Buhari is not doing it right let's wait for 2023 when a weaker vessel like Jonathan will take power and the corruption continues but if He Buhari said no am not leaving. BOOM!!! Welcome to Complete Military rule

Femi Adeshina, you are such a disgrace. This is the weak rebuttal you can come up with. Apart from the name reference, what of the other points raised in Punch's article, most especially the issue of human right abuse? Why did you not address that?
Buhari attained the rank of Major General by quota system. He did not earn it. I'l rather refer to him as a sergeant, yes Sergeant Muhammadu Buhari.

SERGEANT MUHAMMADU BUHARI
