We cannot do without borrowing? This is ridiculous even if its true.

The present government is synonymous to borrowing.
All the money borrowed, Abacha loots, money from crude oil sales, customs money, tax collected etc, what have they used it for?

we cant develop without a long term borrowing plan

My Only concern is borrowed money should be managed and escrowed by world bank and only released to contractors that FG nominates, upon completion of the Infrastructural projects it was borrowed for

..
That word 'contractor' is the zero sum of our underdevelopment. You generally contract out what you CANNOT do. This is symptomatic of Nigeria. We do practically nothing. The 'doing of things' has been the trigger of development of any breakthrough country throughout all ages. Development has always been about the people doing things for themselves.

In contemporary times you simply donot take a loan for a 'start up'. You take loans to expand enterprise. You take off on your own power and take loans to climb out swiftly to avoid the drag of gravity, i.e you can see the thing already working or profit potentials so you need help to expand and reach set goals.

If you take loans just to survive then you are on life support. You are clinically dead. Nigeria has not got the basics done which is simply to put its citizens to work effectively in developing this nation so loans CANNOT add value to our economy. It will all be lost to expatriates, kick backs and foreign industry in massive capital flight.

In other climes infrastructure investment is a tool for stimulating growth because the value is domiciled in the people through increased productivity. The government should prove how many cents in each dollar of loans it takes goes to sustainable grass roots wealth creation or increased GDP if not we will just be caught in the vicious cycle of what I call 'phantom power'. That is the mistaken belief popularly held by Nigerians that once there is stable electric power we will all prosper....

....doing WHAT exactly with electrcity.

It is and never will be the means but always the ways. Loans without targets, border closures without targets, increased taxes without targets, withdrawing subsidies without targets are just a vicious cycle of poverty and depravity. Infrastructure?.... I laugh.

You are right and your proposal, but I can bet by testes that most of these monies would be stolen by these crooks in government. After all government is a continuum. That is now the norm in politics. You see why we are concerned?

Oga. To borrow to fix potholes is madness. How long does it take to repay the interest thoughtless of the principal. 5 years, 10 years, 15 years. In that time will other potholes not have developed.... It is like borrowing N100 naira to eat a single meal that will take you one week to repay. How many other meals will you require in that week. That is madness.

You borrow to create the wealth to buy several meals, pally.... or you will be in poverty forever. You borrow not even to buy a farm but to increase your acreage from 1 to 2 so that you can be guaranteed many meals and sell produce to return the money.

Nigerians donot even know what is right or wrong borrowing. These guys love to borrow for 'contracting' simply because contracting is the only avenue for condensing funds to steal. Contracting is the only way long term developmental aspirations can be grappled with our notorious short term mentality.

That is why typical governments will not patch a pothole for N1,000 tax naira but leave it to decay to become a 1 billion dollar project loan tomorrow and the list is endless. From refineries to roads and railways, condensing today what should be done incrementally on 'citizen' power gradually and deliberately.

They know what to do but corruption will not permit it. China did not develop to become what it is today on loans from anywhere. The people developed that country brick by brick over time. Same with America and much of Europe.

What are we doing with the resources we have and how effectively are we deploying it to 'START-UP' Nigeria. Oga. You will be sick to your stonach to discover just how many loans have been taken to bring our refineries back from the dead in the past 20 years, still....

I support this govt but they have to spell out exactly how each dollar will be spent. We need a list of the capital projects and how much will be spent on each one.

The past govts didn't invest enough on capital projects, they were too busy stealing and feeding fat.

To have good infrastructural system in place we have to borrow but it must be spent as expected.

For me, going out to vote is practically useless.

Abeg who cursed Nigeria with these kind of leaders? Crooks united with a common purpose-to continue to borrow in order to loot.

Where are the monies allegedly said to have been generated by the FIRS(#5.8B), EFCC/ICPC seizures, NNPC/NPA/TSA savings etc according to the APC govt?
You are just too reasonable .exactly my thought.

If there is proper accountability ,transparency and integrity the revenue collected by the govt agencies is enough to feed us a nation and we will have surplus. Why must we run a deficit economy .

I could remember when IBB took the loan and call it SAP . it eventually went down the drain because the loan was not specifically used for what is meant for . At the same time IBB borrowed other countries of the world also borrowed , but those countries that borrowed used it judiciously , but our case is different . .,. mamser was introduced , People's bank all went down the drain .

Moreover, one of the conditions of getting a loan is currency devaluation . we are going to be more pauperized with their selfish agenda.

" he who go borrowing , go sorrwing".

While it is true that we need to borrow to develop and become self-sustaining, we also need to make sure these monies being borrowed are utilized judiciously and conscientiously.

Nigeria has been borrowing for decades with very little tangible benefits from these loans. We borrow for projects and don’t complete said projects and then we go and borrow some more. Definitely not a sustainable model.

Nonsense people
These people do not know how to manage resources so what do you expect? Fashola is a lawyer. The minister of finance or gbemi, what do they know about in simple terms having 1k today and turning it to 2k tomorrow?
If only we had people like Peter Obi etc handling the affairs of the economy and country at large. People smart business wise. People that grow things.
Ambode did not take loans but was able to put facts on the ground in Lagos. Point and kill has come and already canversing for loans meanwhile the whole state is falling apart. Same state 2 different people. SMH.
By the time these clowns are done with naija. I wonder what will remain.
