Countries that have nuclear technology, experience and have already been operating nuclear power plants for years are shutting down their nuclear power plants. Germany has almost shut all down. Nigeria that doesn't is planning to go into it while ignoring the enormous reserves of solar energy, gas, hydropower, coal and many more that can easily be processed to generate power. Our leaders keeps making and boasting about big plans that they can't achieve while they won't do anything about those little plans that can make a difference in the lives of the people. Poor leadership keeps killing this country.

This is another reason I really want to cede from Nigeria. How can a person have bunch of goons as compatriots? I do not think that being a Nigerian is a mark of idiocy but the numbskulls in the Nigerian National Assembly are a very good argument against the stand.

What do you know about Chernobly and Fukushima accident?

You complain of power issues and the best decision is being proposed, yet you go about talking trash of something you know nothing about.

Ghana is planning on Kickstarting one, SA is already building one, yet you don't see it as the solution to your power problems
Oga genius ,if you have the wherewithal to handle and manage the Nuclear power plants for Nigeria, kindly tender your application to the right authorities and stop disturbing my mentions, since you are Mrphysics...thanks.

I see. I am on an MSc in Nuclear Engineering (Nuclear Energy production and industrial application) in France. Now, France get 75% of their electricity from Nuclear energy.

Should I still answer your question?
please do I am waiting, talk me fru how you use Nuclear Energy to generate Electricity please!

This silly statement cannot stand the test of scrutiny when the nuclear source of energy is left in hands of those with some brain cells. The mere insinuation of allowing goons such as Nigerians to manage nuclear power plant is an act of homicide. If these dumbasses want to destroy some section of Nigeria, they can go ahead with such destructive dream. Few countries which are not in the same backward category such as Nigeria are dismantling their nuclear power plants for alternative power source. It is even a serious headache for the advanced countries to store nuclear waste from dismantled station. Nigeria is extremely backward and cannot even manage ordinary and harmless gutter. One wonders on mother earth how the goons from shithole could handle any slight setback from nuclear plant.

Again, your worries are well founded but the mistake you are making is that those countries dismantling their Nuclear Power plants have already taken advantage of its cheap, heavy and steady Power of electricity and they are now DEVELOPED, why would they still stick ot the risk involved when they have achieved most of their aims and are now in "Maintenance Mode", which can be done with more expensive but safer energy source?

Its all about the "economics and balancing of risks". Just because some are dismantling, does not mean we must copy them and not build.

You may be right on your worries about SAFETY ISSUES, bearing in mind Nigerians legendary prospensity for short-cuts and tardiness but Nigerians are not from Mars and if we are to grow our economy, Power is the First Problem we must solve.

There are alternative sources of energy but take it from me that NOT ONE SINGLE INDUSTRIALISED NATION HAS BECOME INDUSTRIALISED WITHOUT HAVING AT LEAST ONE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. NOT ONE, ANDNIGERIA WONT BE AN EXCEPTION.
Nuclear Power source is the fastest and the cheapest (in-terms of return on investment) source of electricity and we must embrace it, if we are to cross over to the league of industrialis(ing) nation or even "developing" nations.

What we need to do is to mitigate against the risks involved. Even Japan, despite their advancement and knack for dilligence, they still had "an accident", so it is not entirely about how dilligent we can be.
We just need to seek help, make sure we deal with saboteurs (Politicians and Civil Servants who collect Bribe to subvert safety measures, by firing squad!) and deliver a safe Nuclear plant.
I am not sure if Russia or China are our best options but we all know that the Europeans and Americans wont want us to have it because they see our development and advancement as innimal to their own foreign policy on theblack people, especially Nigerians because that would reudce the amount of influence they have on us and Black Africans in general, so going to them might also mean an endless wait for delivery, nto to mention their flip-flop on policies.
Maybe we can have a consortium of contractors from bot "East and West" such that the "East" (Russia/China) builds, while the West (Germany, Canada or another European company) Vets and ensure safety and rule-management.

But the bottom lin eis that we need to act fast and get it built, before looting Politicians who cannot deliver the Lagos Ibadan expressway since 1999., steal the money again.

You just said it all.

If nuclear project must succeed in Nigeria, two things are important.

1. Get the masses properly informed
Or

2. Take it away from the press

China that generates its maximum energy from coal is currently building 7 nuclear plants in addition to the one they have.

SA too

japan had a nuclear accident, and they are still alive till today....
if something bad happens, what i dont think would because of international standards and control, the area can still be evacuated and life goes on....

chernobyl is not that bad today....people are returning their....

The "basics" can be got from any Advanced textbook on Physics but the details is not what he can teach here on Nairaland! grin grin

Nuclear Fusion/Fission are advanced topics but the basics is that by splitting the atoms of radioactive nuclie Uranium,, you generate energy through conversion of matter to energy, in a Nuclear Reactor. That energy is harnessed and coverted to electricity.

This might be true but when faced with thorough examination, most of the countries had sufficient HYDROPOWER stations as source of power before venturing into nuclear. The issue is how many functional HYDROPOWER station does Nigeria operate? One cannot break a neck without involving the head. It is also a fact that most of these countries are on the downturn with nuclear power plants as many of stations are dismantled.

Im sorry to say U scored oooooo,U don't know about this topic I am afraid. This was what I think about Mrphysics as well, assumption!
A Nuclear reactor generates a specific type of Energy that is used to generate electricity!in a power station!
jst so U know, Nuclear reactors do not burn fuel or creat green house gases!

Bros you failed to mention that most of the countries had forayed into HYDROPOWER stations as source of energy before taking any step towards nuclear. Nigeria must learn from those who had been to hell. The issue of nuclear plant cannot be left in hands of goons such as Nigerians. It surely will create real estate nobody can enter for 100 years which is half life of radioactive material. Nigeria cannot afford losing Kogi, Benue, Enugu, Taraba, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states on single misstep in nuclear power located in Kogi or Cross River states for 200 years. The radioactive mess is real and not religious sermon.
