412WH IS super poor in this sunny season, you should be getting upto 1600wh to 2500wh daily.
12v setups are usually low budget, and usually doesnt interest most installers...unless they are very close to you, this is mainly cos of low installation/logistics fees.
were you the person complaining of shading of panels?
whats the size of cables from panel to cc, then cc to battery??
then your cc is another are...whats the max instantenous harvest in WH, you have seen?

mixing poly and mono isnt a death sentence, you can still get something useful from it. what is the Voc and Vmp of the mono and poly panels??

Challenges we low budget DIY enthusiasts have!
Before going the DIY way, ensure you read and consult extensively else one quack "expert" will install nonsense for you. Imagine an "expert" using a 12v cc for a 48v setup! But if you are enlightenened before you call him, his response to your questions will show you if he is an expert or not. I went the DIY way and learnt a lot. I am now an "expert" but won't contemplate installing for people except we consult the true experts as we go along. For example, I had a 12v inverter and almost ordered 200 or 250 watts panels(which are 24v)but for my studies and queries. Thanks to the georgeD, kiekie and others, I achieved a near perfect setup but I read and consulted extensively.

My take is don't venture into anything without first getting info on it.

As you rightly said, we have similar set up. With 600watts panels, your cc should be 60a and not 40a. You can only add one more panel to it.
well I concur. those are values for under ideal situations

like said earlier, 4 150w should harvest 8x4=32A at peak. but mine never does, just little above 20A at most at peak sunlight.hence I am getting 5A per PV considering distance from PV to my cc. hence adding 2 more panels should work in my case. so with 8 150 panels, i would have little above 30 amps at peak sun array. just saying.

House what is the implication of replacing a 4.5ah battery with 7ah or 9ah aside longer run time? I have replaced the follow come battery of my new fan with 7ah battery. One of the reasons I opted for the fan make/model is the 12v battery rather than the 6v models.

One other thing, battery gurus and general house. Must a battery be always upside up or I can place it sideways. I ask because if I place the battery sideways, it will enter the battery slot/compartment of the fan and I will be able to replace the cover. See attached pictures.

Pix1 will ensure battery enters the slot and cover replaced but it will stand sideways and not upright. Pix2 is upright but battery will sit outside the battery slot.

Another question.
My bad 5yearold 100ah battery has been idle for months now. Before I stopped using it, it serves during sun hours but lasts 1.5hours after sundown. If I replace the follow come fan battery with it, what is the effect?
I am looking at two options
1: charge it with solar via cc once in maybe 5 days or as need arises.
2: allow fan to charge it during sun hours when inverter is on as the need arises.

Problem I envisage is with option 2. It means I shall be drawing from inverter to charge it thus my main 200ah battery will suffer it as it may not charge fully since the inverter will be pull load to charge the 100ah battery by way of the fan. Hence my resolve to charge only during sun hour. Pls attack the proposal and give suggestions for improvement . Thanks

for a 150w PV

power = 18v x 8.33A
= 150w panel
ideal situation will give the above. ideal situations exists majorly in the lab. on average I hardly get 5A on each panel
hence I have just p= 18Vx 5A = 90w hence 6 panels will give me 520w total..

this is just my approx figures, panel orientation, wiring size and length of wire from the panel to cc are all important

So are you saying that in your 48V MPP inverter you could for instance set cut-off voltage that is above 48V?

True. So far you don't exceed. But how about period of surge, intermittent surge maybe due to good weather when harvest is good.
Anyway we are approaching dry season so you can check the max surge harvest possible .
You just opened my eyes to possibility of increasing my panels without changing my cc. I intend buying a 100a pwm cc from Ali express anytime soon. I am targeting 1500watts because of my fridge but will stay 12v rather than 24v. I need to be proactive and forward looking. I would love to go 24v but coughing out 200+k anytime there is need for battery replacement is my fear. So I'd rather stay 12v. Worst is I will power fridge once in 3 days during sunhours. My fridge draws 130watts and another deep freezer draws 140watts. 1500watts panels should do it.

90watts for a panel quoted as 150watts. Hmnn. Physics master used to tell us efficiency is not 100%. This is about 60%

I would not recommend the above for client installation except diy. and as you mentioned, dry season is a factor. but you might still be able to draw conclusions on your peak current on a really sunny day around 12:30pm to 1:30pm, you get peak current and can factor that in your calculations.

As per your rechargeable fan. lead- acid batteries are called that name because they contain h2so4 electrolyte which is a liquid.so conventionally upside down or sideways is never encouraged. if you change the follow come battery of your fan with the higher ah but same volt(12), not problem should ensue as you will only have to charge for a longer time.

for charging your almost dead battery alongside your working OK batteries, you would eventually kill your new batteries as the older one will try to drop them down to its level. you know solar power is like a sinusoidal wave atimes. I even doubt that your current system charges your batteries effectively. but except you will use a separate PV array and cc for old battery, you should be OK with that.

24v is still your best bet if you want your system to be efficient, if you are worried about price, you can buy 100ah ×2 batteries, just make sure you power your refrigerator during sun hours with an oversized array

Yes! It is a setting problem

No! Not battery related. But snoozing means not charguing thus user may continually drain battery.
He can always equalise them later.

Your battery will become a burnt offering in no time...

lol...but actually if the pv is less than needed to charge the battery very well within a day, and the battery is actively being discharged what we should worry about is the depletion of the battery and its eventual death rather than over charging it.

Hmm.... The engr. in question was gotten from nairaland. He was the only one that posted his 12v solar system installations. I approached one of the names you mentioned but he was only interested in 24v solar system not even considering what i had that could be useful in the installation of the 24v solar system.
The total harvest i got today from my system is 412wh. What do i expect to get and what can i do to make my 12v solar system works better?

I was gonna cheekily say that most installers here seem to be mid to maxi sized installers and would be at least ready to assist a micro installer with questions and answers....and only few installers have a human face when it comes to pricing. Others go wan use cutlass slice ur acct balance. grin

that's if he harvests that value steady. A PV module will barely hit and stay at its max readings....factor in maybe 10-20% off its max value for practical scenarios. So i think that 40a cc is ok.

Max input voltage? Will most likely fry your cc....Max input current? a good cc should limit itself to what it can handle.

I was not complaining of shading. The panels are rightly on top of my own part of the roof. The cc is also close to the battery. I don't know the voc and vmp of the panels. The 150w mono is 18v and 8.5ah.

dont buy more panels yet till you send more pics, so we can see the shading you are talking about. 14amps is low, for an mppt cc. seems your cc is working like pwm. try wiring the 2 panels in series, cos if you do the maths..if you get abt 300w from your array...thats about 25amps x 5hrs , which will give you about 125ah daily, so its either the shading you complained about or your CC, or the cabling.
whats the size of cables used for panels to cc, cc to batt??

Now, the first two pictures are the east side of the building, it is 8 am and it is facing the rising sun. The last picture is the panel on the west side, you can see the sun obscured by the height of the roof.

Before the sun reaches the panel on the west side, it'll be Around 11 am.

Now, when it is beyond noon, the sun stop facing the panel on the east side but hits it by the side , at this same time, the panel on the west faces the sun directly. This is my temporary fix for now.

The third picture is my cc and u can see the instantaneous harvest at beyond 8 ah and it's 8 in the morning.

I am surprised that topmost PMW charger is doing almost the same as my MPPT despite similar set up.
