Dear Nairalanders,pls is MPhil the same as Masters PhD? If otherwise, what is the difference?. Secondly, is it advisable to undergo a second masters degree so as to acquire a CGPA for PhD,or to undergo MPhil towards PhD? I shall be very grateful for your kind assistance. Thanks

MPhil isn't the same as PhD. In some cases, the University may accept you on MPhil and after a year if you are worthy, you may be granted permission to proceed to PhD in your 2nd n 3rd year.

In other cases, you mayn't be found worthy n so ur journey stops at MPhil.

Basicly, u can have M.Phil, M.Phil Ph.D or Ph.D grade. They are all masters grades but the latest two grades means u can proceed to doctorate philosophy but with just MPhil, u cant do PhD, u av to do another masters. If the grade is MPhil PhD, as for UI u just need to spend an extra year, write an exam and thereafter proceed for ur Ph.D. In UI PG grade system, 4.5 - 4.99 is the MPhil PhD grade while 5.0 and above is the PhD grade, anything below the 4.5 CGPA is no proceed. With little effort, its achievable, just strive harder and make the best out of the MSc. Best wishes.......

4.0 for Undergraduate, Pass mark is 45.

I don't think they've switched to 4.0 for PG. PG is most likely still 7.0 with pass mark at 40, it may remain so for a while though.

No, but you'll do course-work and preliminary research work for one year before converting to PhD in the second (or third year), depending on your committment to it. But your own minimum will be four years instead of three years like people that PhD grade. Your maximum will be six years instead of four year.
