DexterousOne:Oh by all means shoddiness and sloppiness won't help. But let's argue on the basis that anyone who qualifies to apply for a job at least is sane enough to list out his bio, education, qualifications, experiences, skills and competencies. It's this mechanical and commercialized approach to writing CVs that i take exception to. |

Masterpiece77:Sometimes, those 2-3 sentence grammar makes an interesting read but they are NEVER the deciding factor. Being an employer myself, my major focus is on... Educational qualification esp field of study; Work experience as it relates to the vacancy; Your sex...some jobs have gender preference; Your age; Skills..... Achievement, professional certification, organizational membership, awards are added advantage that gives you an edge. |

Your references could be the attraction that will get you through the first stage of recruitment process, unless ofcourse you dont have good and credible ones. |

Neoteny:I disagree. Inasmuch as fancy is not the word, your CV must be written with every caution in the word if you want that job. The employer already knows you have a degree and experience, he is looking out for the personae, the mannerisms, your social skills, emotional intelligence, etc |
| Re: Five Reasons Never To Include References On Your CV by Neoteny(m): 11:20am On Dec 24, 2019 |
Gandollaar:Where's the 'personae' if i followed some straitjacket rules like everyone else, or paid some mechanical hack to do it? Personality is when i am inventive and expressive enough with my CV. Besides, employers want talent, not theater. |
| Re: Five Reasons Never To Include References On Your CV by Gandollaar(f): 11:26am On Dec 24, 2019 |
Neoteny:Sorry, I have edited my post. I think we are now on same page. Your CV must be expressive enough. But it takes some skills to know how to write an expressive CV in a limited space. |

Gandollaar:In the US it's mostly how to grab attention so the HR reads your verbiage. So people create wacky and colorful stuff to grab attention. The only rulebook they follow is their own imagination. It might not work in Nigeria because of this persistent craze that you must follow a strict coda for presentation, making your CV not to standout in a sea of CVs all sticking to the same rules. Thus, this craze of thinking CVs have to follow a rulebook is completely bonkers. |
| Re: Five Reasons Never To Include References On Your CV by Neoteny(m): 11:34am On Dec 24, 2019 |
DexterousOne:Exactly Grab HR's attention and they might just peruse your talents to consider you. I acted as HR for a year and have a degree in Human Resources, so i know what i wanted and what to look out for. Anyone who follows a strict convention is telling me he doesn't think outside of the box and thus follows herd mentality. Who wants that kind of boring, safe fellow? |

edoairways:Ok here's a simple thought experiment: Assume everyone accepts that CVs must follow a format and then everyone and their dog follows this format. Now imagine being a HR with ten thousand similar-looking CVs piled on your desk and you've 5 hours to pick the best talent for your company. Then as you're sullenly flicking through you saw one that didn't look like the others, one which goes against all expectations. Would you be curious and lift the veil of your boredom enough to say hmm, let's see who this one fella is? |

Neoteny:Even when your experience and qualifications match, these modern day HR recruiters, that depend on various software to do their thinking for them, will still find some way to eliminate qualified candidates, whose CV format does not fit their preconceived notions, or ideology. The use of ATS and other automated platforms, has made it difficult for candidates whose CVs do not fall into the right format, to get a leg in through the door, as the software just discards their application. There was one board on NL, where one HR manager was saying that if a candidate's email address was not structured in a certain way, he would just trash that CV. Imagine!! Someone had to ask him if he was recruiting email addresses, or human beings.... edoairways:Exactly!! And they have sometimes managed to screen out or jettison valuable or qualified candidates, using that manner. |

CeterisXVII:Your point is completely valid, because we've been manouvred into helping the HRs to discount a large number of applications. In serious firms i worked CVs are sorted and sifted by hand. But we must not encourage this practice. Firms who engage in this act are where you often find the most cases of nepotism and less interest in raw talent. |

In as much as this article seems to make sense to many, I quite disagree with your reasons. 1. Many International employers require references on your CV. 2. You also wrote that employers spend 30 seconds to read a CV. My brother, this is not correct. There is no serious-minded employer or job recruiters that will not peruse your CV well unless something put them off immediately they read a few points. |

Follow this article at your peril. I once got a job because of the name I put as my reference. The recruiter knoew her and just rang her up. The reference spoke glowingly of me and trusting her word...the recruiter didn't bother calling the other candidates. You don't have to include the personal details of the references like number, email etc...but by all means put their names and roles. |

Neoteny:Guy, calm down. no one is saying that there're "some straitjacket rules". There are a wide variety of acceptable formats, but the fact remains that writing CV is a skill or art that should get you that needed invite. Years ago, a friend complained about not getting invites.....I personally reviewed and composed a new CV for him that got him the needed invitations for interviews. I made two different CV format for him that he could use. Also some of us are too busy write a CV and we could outsource to a 3rd party. |

Most Nigeria employers don't even read the long stories, but your reference, put one big man or big politician and get the job instanta, the others is between the employer and your reference, that is reality. Sadly so. |

simonjo:I hate people who begin their post with "guy calm down" You're exactly the kind of problem i was even pointing out about misleading people on CVs Make your pennies off gullible people all you want |
| Re: Five Reasons Never To Include References On Your CV by Nobody: 2:06pm On Dec 24, 2019 |
Neoteny:Guy calm down, life can be difficult but you can still make the most out of it. You are at liberty to hate anyone you want to, and just to disappoint you, I don't need love from you cos I have so many loved ones than my attention. You have also shifted focus from the topic to making suppositions and conjectures, sorry to disappoint you again, I am very happy making pennies. Do I write CVs, yes I do and someone I wrote for is giving my family a vacation in the Bahamas. I can send you a gift when I arrive on Friday cos I have so many gifts than I need. |

| Re: Five Reasons Never To Include References On Your CV by Neoteny(m): 2:14pm On Dec 24, 2019 |
simonjo:I'm not going to bother with the verbosity above, but I'm taking you up on the last bombast: yes send me a gift. If you can't then you're just one among a long line of internet braggarts with nothing to show for it. If writing CVs is how you earn your living then i won't bash you for it, even if the argument lying as the foundation of that enterprise is quite shaky and manipulative. I'm waiting for my gift, and if you send me crap I'll post it here. |
