DrMuzungu:Can't you reason beyond your nose? Don't you know that his ex wife is in control of the UK branch and as such may want to organise all these things just tarnish the church and the ex husband's image? Never rule out this possibility. |

nervorum:This is the only reasonable comment on this thread... In the first paragraph of the story, it says they found evidence that the church, MAY/MIGHT have laundered money.. I find this rather confusing, how do you become 100% sure that you're not 100% sure?? How do you generate evidence and conclude with a probability ![]() They also claimed the independent manager had to pay a churchgoer who sustained an injury in church, "an undisclosed amount as compensation", due to the church lacking 3rd party insurance cover.. I find this extremely hard to believe, it is an attempt to give a dog a bad name.. Like you rightly pointed out, secularism is on the rise, and the UK now prides itself as being irreligious, thus tools like the Charities Act could become persecutory. Following the story, there's no direct evidence of wrongdoing asides the obvious shortage of relevant paperwork.. There was even part where the report casted aspersions on Christ Embassy's preference for LoveWorld media as broadcaster instead of other broadcasters.. I feel a simple contractual agreement could have prevented that.. All these being said, the crux of the matter is that Christ Embassy tries to use her shell companies to handle her services, paying them and reducing taxable income. IMO this is unnecessary, just pay Caesar his due and move on.. And get a good lawyer too. Jesus Christ paid tax, I don't see the point in registering as a religious charity in the first place, it puts them in the line of fire |

This is an aspect all succeeding governments in Nigeria have failed us, we the people. Those dingbats can't afford to buy private jet and still rub it in on our faces if the government knows its right from left |

Extra notes from the inquiry :- The inquiry, not being satisfied that the funds held in these accounts were owned by Christ Embassy Nigeria, exercised legal powers and issued orders dated 8 august 2014, under section 76(3)(d) of the Act, freezing six of these nine bank accounts, protecting funds to a value of £615,420. The trustees’ failure to maintain sufficient records and processes to account for expenditure resulted in scrutiny by HMRC creating a risk of criminal proceedings and loss to the charity’s assets in regard to tax liabilities and is further evidence of trustees failing in their duty to protect and manage resources responsibly. The charity’s main asset other than cash was its ownership of a number of properties. The Inquiry identified 3 UK properties that were not disclosed to the Commission in the trustees’ first responses or during the October 2013 meeting. The trustees asserted that despite the legal title of the properties being vested in the name of two of the charity’s trustees, the properties “were acquired on behalf of, and held in trust for, Christ Embassy Nigeria”. The failings of trustees to act appropriately left the charity open to financial and reputational risk and losses, as well as to risk of litigation. Conclusions The Inquiry concluded that there was serious misconduct and/or mismanagement in the charity’s administration. In light of the findings and evidence of misconduct and/or mismanagement, the Inquiry exercised its legal powers under section 79(2)(a) of the Act to remove two of the trustees of the charity. However the trustees subject to regulatory action resigned prior to the Commission being able to complete the process. Section 79(5) and 82 of The Charities (Protection and Social Investment ) Act 2016 has closed this loophole. The Inquiry, being satisfied that there had been misconduct and / or mismanagement in the administration of the charity and that it was necessary or desirable to act for the protection of the property of the charity, used a number of regulatory powers, including under section 76(3)(d) , directing the banks not to part with the charity’s property without the Commission’s prior written consent, protecting £615,420 of the charity’s funds Remedial actions were taken to regularise the charity’s governance to ensure it was fit for purpose. This included the Interim Manager reducing the number of bank accounts in operation from approximately 40 to 8 and in September 2015 took control of just under £12,000,000. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/charity-inquiry-christ-embassy/charity-inquiry-christ-embassy#trustees |

GrabHisBalls:Churches as registered charities do not pay tax in the UK and the government goes further to allow them reclaim from the Govt the tax Tithe givers had already paid to the Govt on that element of their income. The tax liability comes where payments / expenses / benefits made to church employees are deemed a benefit in kind which is taxable on all employees irrespective of who your employer is. An example is if the church gives an employee free accommodation etc. And even though the tax liability for a benefit in kind is payable by the receiving employee, the employer - i.e. the church - has a legal duty to inform the Tax man of this benefit in kind. |

degamemaster:Google it, my friend. It is not only the UK where his "church" committed fraud. It happened many times in South Africa and certainly everywhere else. There are many people who came forward explaining that they were offered money to act in his fake miracles, just to be duped of that money afterward. Like you said, never rule out that possibility. https://www.pulse.ng/communities/religion/pastor-chris-oyakhilome-church-member-accuses-christ-embassy-founder-of-performing/3b98yyp https://conatusnews.com/africas-fraudulent-miracle-pastors-must-held-accountable/ https://www./video/x6tc446 |
